Dolby Atmos and Q-Symphony solve different problems. Dolby Atmos is an immersive audio format: compatible films, shows, music or games can place sounds around and above you when the source, connection and playback equipment all support Atmos. Q-Symphony is Samsung’s synchronization feature: compatible Samsung TV speakers play at the same time as a compatible Samsung soundbar or other supported sound device.
They can operate together. A compatible Samsung TV and soundbar can use Q-Symphony while rendering Dolby Atmos, but neither feature is automatic. You need the right model pairing, an Atmos-capable source and a connection and audio setting that actually passes the format.
Dolby Atmos and Q-Symphony in one comparison
| Question | Dolby Atmos | Q-Symphony |
|---|---|---|
| What is it? | An immersive audio format and rendering system supported by compatible equipment and content. | Samsung technology that synchronizes compatible TV speakers with a compatible soundbar or other supported audio device. |
| What changes? | Supported audio is represented and rendered to create a spatial impression, including sounds intended to come from above. | The TV and sound device play together instead of leaving one set of compatible speakers silent. |
| Is special content required? | Yes. The source must contain a Dolby Atmos track. | No separate Q-Symphony content format is required; the compatible device pairing and setup are required. |
| What must you verify? | Source content, source output settings, TV and soundbar support, and the connection path. | The exact TV and sound-device models, region, year and supported setup. |
| Can they work together? | Yes, when the TV and soundbar support Atmos and the model pairing supports Q-Symphony. | Samsung says compatible Atmos devices can provide Atmos sound together through Q-Symphony. |
The shortest practical distinction is this: Atmos describes the audio signal and its intended spatial effect; Q-Symphony describes which Samsung speakers are synchronized to play it.

What Dolby Atmos does on a Samsung soundbar
Atmos carries positional audio information that a compatible playback system interprets to create a sense of sound in front of, beside, behind and above the listener. Samsung describes the goal as a more three-dimensional presentation, but the result is an intended spatial impression rather than a guarantee that every room will produce discrete overhead sound.

Atmos needs an Atmos soundtrack
A soundbar labeled “Dolby Atmos” does not convert every program into Atmos. A film, episode, game or music release must provide an Atmos track, and the player must be configured to send it. Ordinary stereo or non-Atmos surround content remains in its original format unless a device’s separate upmixing mode is used; that is not the same as receiving native Atmos.
The connection determines whether Atmos arrives
Samsung’s US support guidance states that “Dolby Atmos works only through an HDMI connection.” For a TV-to-soundbar connection, Samsung specifies HDMI eARC. The TV, soundbar and source must all support the required audio path, and the TV’s digital-audio setting must allow the signal to pass rather than downmix it. Samsung’s setup instructions are documented in its Dolby Atmos support guide.
What you can and cannot infer from the label
Atmos support tells you that the soundbar can decode or render the format under supported conditions. It does not establish a particular loudness level, dialogue improvement, room-filling result or surround performance. Placement, room reflections, the soundbar’s speaker layout and any rear speakers all affect what you hear.

What Q-Symphony does
Q-Symphony lets compatible Samsung TV speakers and a compatible Samsung soundbar or wireless speaker operate simultaneously in a coordinated system. Samsung’s US definition of Q-Symphony 4.0 describes sound playing through the TV speakers and the compatible sound device at the same time.
It is synchronized output, not an audio format
Q-Symphony does not add an Atmos soundtrack to a program and does not replace the source’s audio format. It determines how supported Samsung hardware shares playback. You still need the source format and connection required for Atmos if Atmos is your goal.
Compatibility is model-specific
Samsung publishes year- and model-specific support lists and warns that compatibility depends on the particular TV and sound device. Region, model suffix, firmware and product year can change the available feature. Do not assume that any Samsung TV works with any Samsung soundbar simply because both products carry the Samsung name.

Samsung’s US support page says the Q-Symphony Setup menu is available on 2024–2025 Samsung TVs. Its 2025 list includes selected Neo QLED, OLED, QLED, UHD and The Frame televisions, and soundbars in the Q990F, Q930F, Q800F, QS700F, Q600F, B750F and B650F families. The same page separately lists supported 2024 models. These are US lists, not a universal promise for every country, so check your exact model numbers in Samsung’s Q-Symphony 4.0 support article.
How the two features work together
In a supported pairing, an Atmos soundtrack can be decoded by the sound system while Q-Symphony coordinates the compatible TV speakers and soundbar. Atmos supplies the spatially encoded content; Q-Symphony supplies the synchronized Samsung outputs. If any link in that chain lacks support, you may still get sound, but not the advertised combination.
- The title or game must offer Dolby Atmos.
- The player must send the track in a compatible bitstream format.
- The TV and soundbar must support Atmos.
- A TV connection normally needs HDMI eARC for the Atmos path described by Samsung.
- The exact TV/soundbar pairing must support Q-Symphony in your region and product year.
Samsung does not publish a universal promise that Q-Symphony always sounds better. Room geometry, seating position, speaker placement, content mixing and the particular pairing affect perception.

Set up Dolby Atmos from a Samsung TV
Menu names vary by TV year and software version, but Samsung’s US procedure follows this sequence.
- Use HDMI eARC. Connect the TV’s HDMI eARC port to the soundbar’s HDMI eARC/ARC port with a suitable HDMI cable. Samsung’s Atmos guidance requires HDMI and specifies eARC for a TV-to-soundbar connection.
- Select the soundbar as the TV output. Open the TV’s Sound Output controls and choose the connected soundbar rather than the internal speakers alone.
- Enable Dolby Atmos in the TV sound settings. The exact label and location can differ by model; use the audio options associated with the HDMI/eARC output.
- Set the digital output format. In Digital Output Audio Format, choose Dolby Digital or Auto as appropriate to the menu and connected equipment. The correct option depends on the TV and source; do not force a format your equipment cannot decode.
- Play known Atmos content. Start a title whose audio menu explicitly identifies a Dolby Atmos track. When the soundbar detects Atmos media, Samsung says its display shows “DOLBY ATMOS.”
While Dolby Atmos is active, Samsung documents that sound-effect modes are unavailable. That is an operating limitation, not evidence that the soundbar is defective.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSet up Atmos from a UHD Blu-ray player or game console
- Confirm that the specific disc, stream or game supports Dolby Atmos; a compatible player cannot create an Atmos track that the title does not contain.
- Connect the source through a compatible HDMI path. Depending on the equipment, that can mean connecting the source to the soundbar and passing video to the TV, or routing it through a TV that supports the required eARC return path.
- In the source’s audio menu, select bitstream output rather than a setting that decodes or downmixes the soundtrack to PCM stereo.
- Turn off secondary-audio options when the player offers them and the primary Atmos track requires that setting. Secondary audio can force a lower-compatible mix on some players.
- Start the Atmos title and check the soundbar display for “DOLBY ATMOS.” If the indicator does not appear, verify the title, cable path and output settings before changing speaker modes.
Source-device menus differ, so use the manual for the exact console or disc player alongside Samsung’s Atmos setup instructions.

Turn on Q-Symphony
- Confirm the exact TV and soundbar models on Samsung’s regional compatibility list. Check the model code, not only the product family name.
- Connect and power the soundbar using the connection supported by that pairing. Samsung models may support different wired or wireless routes; the support page for your products is authoritative.
- On the TV, open Sound Output and select the Q-Symphony option or the compatible sound device. On supported 2024–2025 Samsung TVs, Samsung identifies a Q-Symphony Setup menu.
- Follow the on-screen pairing and synchronization prompts, then play a familiar program to confirm that both the TV and soundbar are producing audio.
- If you also want Atmos, complete the HDMI/eARC and Atmos source steps above. Q-Symphony selection by itself does not prove that Atmos is being received.
Samsung’s buying guidance and support documentation provide the current product and setup checks in its soundbar buying guide and its soundbar selection guide.
What to check when Atmos or Q-Symphony is missing
The soundbar plays audio but never shows Dolby Atmos
- Check that the title actually offers an Atmos track and that it is selected in the app or disc menu.
- Confirm the source is set to bitstream and that secondary audio is disabled when required.
- Inspect every connection: Samsung’s stated Atmos path is HDMI, and TV return audio requires eARC.
- Set the TV’s Digital Output Audio Format to Dolby Digital or Auto as appropriate for the connected equipment.
- Try a known Atmos title and look for the soundbar’s “DOLBY ATMOS” indicator.
Q-Symphony is not listed
- Verify the exact TV and soundbar model codes against the regional Samsung list; a similar-looking model may not be supported.
- Check that the TV is from a supported year and that the feature is available in your market.
- Update and restart the TV and soundbar, then reopen Sound Output or Q-Symphony Setup.
- Use the connection method supported by that specific pairing. Wireless availability is not universal across models.
Only one set of speakers is audible
Re-select the Q-Symphony output rather than a soundbar-only or TV-only output. Confirm that the soundbar is powered, paired and selected as the active device. If the program is Atmos, troubleshoot the signal path separately; synchronized playback and Atmos detection are separate checks.
How to choose a Samsung soundbar for these features
Start with the TV you already own or plan to buy, then verify feature compatibility before comparing channel counts. Samsung’s buying material recommends checking the TV and other devices’ ports and setup. Use this decision list:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| Decision | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Exact TV/soundbar compatibility | Q-Symphony support is tied to specific models, years and regions. |
| Atmos support on every relevant device | The source, TV and soundbar must preserve and render the Atmos track. |
| HDMI/eARC ports | The Samsung TV-to-soundbar Atmos route requires HDMI eARC. |
| Channel configuration | Channel count describes the hardware layout, not a guarantee of the spatial result. |
| Rear speakers and subwoofer | Check whether they are included, optional or absent; this changes installation and room coverage. |
| Room and seating layout | Reflections, walls, ceiling height and listening position influence an immersive effect. |
| Budget and accessories | A suitable HDMI cable may be needed if you do not already have one for the TV and soundbar’s eARC connection. |
Samsung’s cited guidance does not establish that an expensive or premium HDMI cable is required. The practical requirement is a cable and port combination that supports the capabilities of your equipment.
Important limits to keep in mind
- Samsung’s support pages and model lists cited here are US materials. Menus, wireless features, product names and availability can differ by country and year.
- Atmos is conditional on content and signal transport; the logo on a soundbar is not proof that the current program is Atmos.
- Q-Symphony is conditional on a supported Samsung TV/device pairing and does not guarantee a better result in every room.
- Samsung describes intended effects rather than independent comparative measurements. There is no basis here for promising a specific loudness, dialogue gain or surround-performance improvement.
- Sound-effect modes being unavailable during Atmos playback is a documented limitation of the operating mode.
For current model lists, ports and regional setup details, consult Samsung’s buying guide, Atmos support page and Q-Symphony support page before purchasing or wiring the system.
