A portable music player performs two separate jobs before sound reaches wired headphones: it decodes the music file into digital audio samples, then a digital-to-analog converter (DAC) turns those samples into an analog electrical signal. “Audio codec” can mean the file format and decoder (such as FLAC or MP3), or an integrated hardware chip that combines conversion and other audio functions. Knowing which meaning applies helps you choose compatible files, understand specification sheets, and troubleshoot playback.

The playback path from a music file to your headphones

A useful simplified chain is:

music file → file decoder → digital audio samples (often PCM) → DAC → analog output stage → wired headphones or another analog input

Each block has a different responsibility. The decoder interprets the file’s encoding and reconstructs numerical audio samples. Those samples describe the waveform at discrete points in time. The DAC converts the numbers into a continuously varying electrical signal. An analog output stage then filters, amplifies and routes that signal to the headphone jack or line output.

Some players add digital volume control, equalization, sample-rate conversion, noise shaping or headphone amplification between these stages. Consequently, a DAC chip is important, but it is not the sole determinant of a player’s measured or perceived performance.

What does a DAC do in a music player?

DAC stands for digital-to-analog converter. Digital audio is stored as numbers; headphones and conventional amplifiers need a changing analog voltage. The DAC performs that conversion each time the player outputs analog sound. iFi’s explanation of DACs identifies portable music players among the devices that need this conversion to produce an analog signal.

For PCM audio, the player presents the DAC with a stream of sample values, a sample rate and a bit depth. The converter uses those values to create a voltage that follows the encoded waveform. Reconstruction filtering removes unwanted images created by the sampling process. The analog stage that follows supplies the current and gain required by the connected headphones.

A player with a wired analog headphone output therefore contains a DAC somewhere in its signal path, whether it advertises a separate converter chip or an integrated audio device. A player that sends audio only as a digital USB or wireless stream may leave the final conversion to another device.

What a DAC does not do

  • It does not identify whether a file is FLAC, MP3, WAV or another format.
  • It does not decompress an MP3 or decode a FLAC container by itself.
  • It does not guarantee a particular sound quality merely because its specification lists a high sample rate or bit depth.

Those tasks belong to software, firmware and the rest of the output circuit. Cambridge Audio’s DAC FAQ (first published April 11, 2014, revised December 3, 2025) describes its converters as receiving already-decoded, two-channel PCM and converting it to analog. The page states, with its original spelling, that the DACs “do not do any decodiing.”

What is the difference between a DAC and an audio codec?

The word codec is short for coder-decoder, but audio documentation uses it in two related ways.

Codec as a music-file format and decoder

In everyday player specifications, a codec usually refers to the method used to encode and decode a file. FLAC stores audio losslessly: decoding reproduces the original PCM samples, while compression reduces storage size without discarding samples. MP3 uses lossy compression, which removes information according to its encoding model. WAV commonly carries linear PCM with little or no compression. The player’s software decoder turns each supported file into a stream of samples for the DAC.

Denon’s glossary defines sampling frequency as the number of readings taken each second when an analog signal is represented digitally, and bit rate as the amount of audio data recorded or read in one second. Bit rate is especially prominent in MP3 specifications; sample rate and bit depth describe the resulting PCM representation.

Codec as an audio hardware component

In electronics, an audio codec can be a chip that combines an analog-to-digital converter (ADC), a DAC and supporting functions such as microphone inputs, mixers, digital interfaces, filters and volume controls. Analog Devices’ MAX98090 is an example of this type of integrated component. In a recording path, its ADC turns an analog microphone signal into numbers; in a playback path, its DAC turns numbers back into an analog signal.

Thus, “the player supports the FLAC codec” describes file decoding, while “the player uses an audio codec” may describe the hardware package. Check the surrounding wording—file extensions and bit rates indicate the first meaning; ADC, DAC, inputs and output channels indicate the second.

How decoding and conversion happen during playback

  1. Storage access: The operating system reads compressed or uncompressed bytes from internal storage, a memory card or a network source.
  2. Format recognition: Firmware identifies the container and codec, checks metadata and verifies that the file is not protected by an unsupported rights system.
  3. Decoding: The codec implementation reconstructs digital samples. For most music files these are linear PCM samples; a DSD-capable path may use a different internal representation.
  4. Digital processing: The player may adjust volume, apply equalization, mix channels or convert the sample rate. These operations occur before conversion.
  5. Digital-to-analog conversion: The DAC converts the resulting sample stream into an analog waveform and applies its reconstruction filtering.
  6. Output: The analog stage drives wired headphones, a line-level input or another analog connection. A digital output instead sends data onward, so another device performs the final DAC step.

This sequence explains why changing a file extension does not make an unsupported file playable: the decoder must understand the actual encoding, and the output path must accept the resulting stream.

Can a player play FLAC, MP3 and other formats?

Compatibility is specific to the exact model, firmware and playback application. A format name alone is not enough; players can impose different limits for each format, channel count, sample rate, bit depth or bit rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Format or term What it describes What to verify on a player
FLAC Lossless compressed audio; decoding restores the encoded PCM samples. Supported sample rates, bit depths, channel count and maximum file size.
MP3 Lossy compressed audio, normally specified with a bit rate. Supported bit-rate range, sample rates, variable-bit-rate behavior and tags.
WAV / linear PCM A container commonly carrying uncompressed PCM samples. PCM bit depth, sample rate, channel layout and container variants.
DSD A one-bit, high-rate digital representation used by some releases. Whether the player decodes it natively or converts it to PCM before output.

Do not infer audible superiority from “lossless” or from a larger number on a specification. Lossless describes what compression discards, not how a particular recording was mastered, and the available documentation does not establish a universal listening benefit from higher-resolution files or DAC specifications.

Sample rate, bit depth and bit rate in practical terms

Sample rate

Sample rate is the number of amplitude measurements made per second. A 44.1 kHz stream contains 44,100 samples per channel per second; a 192 kHz stream contains 192,000. The player and DAC must support the rate used by the file or convert it to another rate.

Bit depth

Bit depth is the number of bits used for each PCM sample. Greater depth permits more amplitude steps and more theoretical dynamic range, but the audible result also depends on recording level, noise, mastering and the player’s analog circuitry.

Bit rate

Bit rate measures data per second, usually in kilobits per second for MP3. It is not interchangeable with sample rate or bit depth. A variable-bit-rate file can use different amounts of data from moment to moment while remaining one MP3 file.

Real specification examples: why model documentation matters

Sony’s official NW-A306 help guide illustrates the need to read format-specific tables. For that model, the guide lists FLAC support at 16- and 24-bit with sample rates from 8 to 384 kHz. It lists MP3 at 32–320 kbps and sample rates of 32, 44.1 and 48 kHz. The same guide notes that DSD is converted to linear PCM for output. These are capabilities of the NW-A306 guide, not universal limits for portable players.

Panasonic’s Audio Player 2 page gives a different example for the compatible products and software it describes: PCM/WAV and FLAC are listed from 44.1 to 192 kHz at 16–24 bit, while MP3 is listed at 32–320 kbps. The differing ranges show why a headline such as “supports high-resolution audio” is incomplete without the format, rate and depth.

Does my music player need a DAC?

If you plug wired headphones or an analog cable directly into the player, yes—there must be a DAC in that playback path. It may be a discrete DAC chip, an audio codec that integrates DAC and ADC functions, or another system-on-chip block. You do not need to buy a separate DAC simply because the player already provides the analog output you need.

An external USB DAC is optional. It can be useful when a compatible phone, computer or player lacks an analog output, when you need a different connector or output level, or when a specific setup requires it. The source device must support USB audio and provide the necessary power or battery arrangement. No supplied evidence establishes that adding an external DAC produces an audible improvement for every player or listener, so treat it as a compatibility or feature choice rather than an automatic upgrade.

How to choose a player for your files

  1. List your actual files: Record each format, sample rate, bit depth and MP3 bit-rate range in your library.
  2. Read the exact support table: Use the manufacturer’s manual or help guide for the model and firmware you intend to use.
  3. Check exceptions: Look for DSD-to-PCM conversion, protected-file restrictions, maximum file size, mono or multichannel limitations and unsupported metadata.
  4. Match the output: Confirm that the player has the wired analog, digital or wireless connection your headphones or amplifier accepts.
  5. Verify software support: A desktop companion application may support fewer formats than the device firmware, or vice versa.
  6. Consider the rest of the system: Headphone impedance, output power, battery life, storage, controls and physical size can matter more to daily use than a DAC’s maximum numerical specification.

Troubleshooting a file that will not play

The player says the format is unsupported

Confirm the codec inside the container rather than trusting the filename extension. Re-encode a test copy to a documented format such as FLAC, MP3 or PCM/WAV within the player’s stated limits. Keep the original file so that a conversion does not become your only copy.

The file is recognized but silent

Check whether the file uses a sample rate, channel layout or bit depth outside the model’s limits. Also check digital volume, mute, balance, output routing and whether a USB or wireless connection has taken control of playback.

DSD sounds different or is unavailable at an output

Read the model’s DSD note. A player that converts DSD to linear PCM may show PCM-related output behavior, and an external digital output may have different rules from the built-in headphone jack.

Album art or track names are missing

Metadata handling is separate from audio conversion. The decoder can successfully produce sound even when tags or embedded artwork use an unsupported format.

What determines sound beyond the DAC label?

Performance depends on the complete implementation: clocking and digital filtering, analog output stage, headphone amplifier, power supply, channel separation, output impedance, volume control and the quality of the recording itself. Two products using the same converter family can therefore behave differently, while a product with a less prominent chip can meet a listener’s needs very well.

Manufacturer specifications are useful for checking compatibility and electrical limits. They are not controlled listening comparisons. The available documentation does not support a universal claim that a higher-specification DAC, a higher sample rate or a lossless file must sound better in every listening setup.

A concise way to remember the distinction

  • Codec/decoder: Understands the file and reconstructs digital samples.
  • DAC: Converts those samples into an analog electrical signal.
  • Audio codec chip: May combine ADC, DAC and other audio functions in one hardware component.
  • Player specification: Determines which formats and numerical limits are actually supported.

When a specification sheet uses “codec,” identify whether it is discussing a file format, a software decoder or an integrated hardware component. Then follow the complete signal path to the output you plan to use.
