Cosmic microwave background (CMB) measurements strongly support the simplest inflationary picture: the early universe acquired adiabatic, nearly power-law scalar perturbations whose amplitude changes gradually with scale. Planck measured a red scalar tilt, ns = 0.9649 ± 0.0042 (68% confidence), rather than an exactly scale-invariant spectrum. It found no statistically significant running of that tilt or localized spectral feature in the analyses summarized here.

The decisive prediction still has not been detected. Inflationary gravitational waves would produce a primordial B-mode polarization pattern, but experiments have so far found only upper limits on the tensor-to-scalar ratio: r0.002 < 0.10 from Planck alone and < 0.056 when Planck is combined with BICEP2/Keck BK15 data, both at 95% confidence. These limits narrow the range of viable inflation models; they are not a detection of primordial gravitational waves.

What the CMB can test about inflation

Inflation is tested indirectly through the statistical properties of fluctuations imprinted on the CMB. During inflation, quantum fluctuations are stretched to cosmic scales. After inflation, those fluctuations seed the density variations from which the photon–baryon plasma, galaxies and other structure develop. The CMB records the resulting pattern in temperature and polarization across the sky.

A successful model must explain several linked observations at once: the locations and heights of acoustic peaks, the relative amount of power on different angular scales, the relationship between temperature and polarization, and any gravitational-wave contribution. Planck temperature, polarization and lensing measurements are consistent with the six-parameter, spatially flat ΛCDM model with adiabatic, power-law initial perturbations. That agreement does not identify one unique inflationary potential, but it establishes a demanding baseline that alternatives must match.

What each CMB spectrum measures

TT: temperature anisotropy

The TT spectrum is the correlation of temperature fluctuations with themselves. Its acoustic peaks are oscillations in the coupled photon–baryon fluid before recombination. Peak positions and heights constrain the baryon and matter densities, spatial geometry, the scalar perturbation amplitude and its tilt. On the largest angular scales, TT also carries information about tensor power, although cosmic variance and the scalar contribution make that constraint comparatively weak.

TE: temperature–E-mode correlation

TE measures how temperature fluctuations correlate with E-mode polarization. The correlation demonstrates that the polarization pattern is tied to the same primordial perturbations that source temperature anisotropy, rather than being an unrelated foreground. TE also helps constrain reionization and identify calibration problems because a miscalibrated temperature or polarization map changes the predicted cross-correlation.

EE: E-mode polarization

Scalar density perturbations generate E-mode polarization. EE therefore provides an independent, high-signal view of the same scalar spectrum inferred from TT. Its acoustic peaks test the phase and amplitude of the photon–baryon oscillations and improve estimates of cosmological parameters. Agreement among TT, TE and EE is an important reason the adiabatic scalar framework remains the standard interpretation.

BB: B-mode polarization

B modes have a curl-like angular pattern. Primordial tensor perturbations—gravitational waves generated during inflation—can create them, making BB the most direct CMB route to an inflationary gravitational-wave signal. But a measured B mode is not automatically primordial. Gravitational lensing converts some E-mode power into B modes, and polarized Galactic dust is a major foreground. The primordial component must therefore be separated from both effects before a tensor claim is credible.

The scalar spectrum is close to, but not exactly, scale invariant

A perfectly scale-invariant scalar spectrum would have ns = 1. Planck’s 2018 result, ns = 0.9649 ± 0.0042 at 68% confidence, is below one by enough to establish a red tilt in the baseline analysis. “Red” means that fluctuations carry slightly more power on larger scales than on smaller scales. This gentle scale dependence is a generic expectation of many slow-roll inflation models and is more informative than a broad statement that the spectrum is merely “nearly flat.”

Planck’s cited inflation analysis found no evidence that the tilt changes detectably with scale. In Planck 2015, the fitted running was dns/d ln k = −0.003 ± 0.007, consistent with zero. The same work reconstructed a smooth, featureless primordial spectrum over approximately 0.008 to 0.1 Mpc−1. Within those analyses, no localized oscillation, break or other feature was required to explain the data.

The absence of running or features does not prove that every inflation model is smooth. It means that any scale dependence or feature must be small enough to remain consistent with the measured spectra and their uncertainties. Models that predict large departures from a power law are constrained even when the data do not select a particular replacement.

What the tensor-to-scalar ratio limits mean

The tensor-to-scalar ratio, r, compares the primordial gravitational-wave power with scalar density-perturbation power at a specified pivot scale. The quoted limits use r0.002, so the subscript refers to a wavenumber of 0.002 Mpc−1. An upper limit says that the tensor contribution could be zero or any value below the stated bound; it is not evidence that a tensor signal has been measured.

Data combination or analysis Tensor constraint Confidence and qualification
Planck 2015 r0.002 < 0.11 95% confidence; Planck inflation analysis
Planck 2018 r0.002 < 0.10 95% confidence; Planck data
Planck 2018 combined with BICEP2/Keck BK15 r0.002 < 0.056 95% confidence; joint temperature, polarization and B-mode constraints
Particle Data Group review, Planck all-power-spectrum analysis r < 0.069 95% confidence; review value using the stated data combination
Particle Data Group review with BICEP2/Keck data r < 0.044 95% confidence; foreground-separation uncertainties emphasized

The values differ because they come from different likelihood choices, data combinations and review conventions. They all support the same evidence statement: no statistically significant primordial tensor component has been established, and the allowed amplitude is small.

Why a B-mode claim requires foreground control

Inflationary B modes are expected to be faint compared with several non-primordial sources. Lensing by intervening structure remaps the CMB and converts part of the much larger E-mode signal into B modes. Polarized Galactic dust adds another B-mode pattern whose amplitude and frequency dependence vary across the sky. Instrumental calibration and beam effects can also leak temperature or E modes into BB.

Consequently, an experiment must model or remove these contributions, test multiple sky regions and frequencies, and propagate uncertainty into the tensor limit. The historically reported BICEP2 excess was subsequently understood to require accounting for Galactic dust. The appropriate current conclusion is therefore an upper limit, not a primordial detection.

Planck’s power-spectrum analysis summarizes the physical distinction: density perturbations source E-mode polarization and correlate with temperature, whereas B-mode polarization is a signature of tensor modes, meaning primordial gravitational waves from inflation. The statement describes the idealized source physics; in real maps, lensing and dust mean that observed BB is a mixture that must be disentangled.

Acoustic peaks provide a consistency test

The acoustic peaks are not isolated bumps with independent origins. They are the harmonics of the same photon–baryon fluid, so their spacing, relative heights and appearance in TT, TE and EE must fit one coherent cosmological history. Planck’s overview reports 18 well-constrained peaks across temperature and polarization. Matching that pattern constrains the matter and baryon content, geometry and primordial scalar spectrum simultaneously.

This cross-check matters for inflation because a primordial spectrum that is strongly non-adiabatic, highly featured or very far from a power law would generally leave inconsistent signatures among the spectra. The observed agreement is why Planck’s temperature, polarization and lensing data remain consistent with the six-parameter flat ΛCDM framework rather than requiring extra primordial components.

How the measurements narrow inflation models

CMB data do not measure the inflationary potential directly. They constrain the observable consequences of that potential and of the transition from inflation to the hot early universe. A useful comparison uses the following axes:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Tensor amplitude: Does the model predict an r value below the current 95% limits?
  • Scalar tilt and running: Does it produce a red tilt near 0.965 without a running larger than the data allow?
  • Non-Gaussianity: Does it create detectable departures from Gaussian fluctuation statistics? The cited Planck analyses found no compelling signal requiring one.
  • Isocurvature: Does it add perturbations with a composition different from the adiabatic mode? No compelling isocurvature component is required by the cited results.
  • Spectral features: Does it predict oscillations, steps or localized departures from a smooth spectrum? The reconstructed range is featureless within the reported sensitivity.
  • Reheating and external data: Are the model’s reheating assumptions compatible with the CMB and with large-scale-structure observations?

Planck 2015 reported that simple monomial inflation with a potential proportional to φ2 and natural-inflation scenarios were disfavored relative to models predicting smaller tensor amplitudes, including R2 inflation. “Disfavored” is not the same as mathematically impossible: the result depends on the model’s parameterization, reheating assumptions and the data combination. The broader 2018 conclusion remained that the baseline adiabatic, power-law description fits well.

What the CMB does not establish

  • It does not identify a unique inflationary potential or prove that inflation occurred rather than every conceivable alternative.
  • It does not show a primordial B-mode detection. Current BB evidence is limited by lensing, Galactic dust and instrumental systematics.
  • It does not require a measurable running of the scalar tilt; the fitted running is consistent with zero.
  • It does not require isocurvature modes, large primordial non-Gaussianity or localized spectral features in the cited analyses.
  • It does not remove dependence on post-inflationary history. Reheating assumptions affect how an observed tilt or tensor limit maps back to a specific model.

How to read a future inflation result

  1. Check the observable. Determine whether the result concerns TT, TE, EE, BB or a combined likelihood. A BB excess alone is not automatically primordial.
  2. Identify the confidence statement. Distinguish a two-sided measurement from a one-sided 95% upper limit on r.
  3. Inspect foreground treatment. Look for Galactic dust templates, frequency tests and a lensing-B-mode model.
  4. Compare the scalar spectrum. Check the reported ns, any running and the wavenumber range over which features were tested.
  5. Test model consistency. Ask whether the proposed model also satisfies non-Gaussianity, isocurvature, reheating and large-scale-structure constraints.

Bottom line

CMB temperature and polarization measurements reveal a remarkably smooth, adiabatic scalar perturbation spectrum with a statistically significant red tilt, ns = 0.9649 ± 0.0042, and no compelling running or features in the cited Planck analyses. TT, TE and EE provide mutually consistent acoustic-peak evidence for that picture. BB measurements have not yet isolated primordial gravitational waves: after accounting for lensing and Galactic dust, they set upper limits such as r0.002 < 0.056 with Planck plus BK15. Inflation remains strongly supported as a framework for generating the observed scalar perturbations, while the specific mechanism, potential and tensor amplitude remain open questions.
