Some cordless drills add brushless motors, adjustable clutches, and hammer-drill or bind-response features—but the examples available do not show that every inexpensive drill lacks them. Compare the specifications of the particular models you’re considering, and match each feature to the work you need to do.
What these features do—and what the examples prove
The three capabilities below appear on specific documented drills. Their presence can matter for runtime, fastening control, masonry drilling, or response to a sudden accessory stop. But the cited product pages are manufacturer specifications, not independent tests or a survey of low-cost drills. They do not establish a price cutoff or prove that all cheap drills omit these features.
1. Brushless motors: claimed efficiency and runtime benefits
A brushless motor is one feature to look for if you value efficiency and runtime. DEWALT describes the brushless motor in its DCD706F2 as providing efficient performance and runtime. Milwaukee says the motor in its 2902-20 is optimized for efficiency and delivers more runtime and longer life than a brushed motor. Those are manufacturers’ claims, not independently measured comparisons.
The DEWALT DCD706F2 is a 12V MAX brushless 3/8-inch hammer-drill kit. Milwaukee’s 2902-20 is an M18 brushless hammer drill with a 1/2-inch chuck. Their different platforms and configurations make them illustrations of the feature, not a head-to-head test.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Adjustable clutches: more control when driving fasteners
A clutch setting lets you select a fastening torque range. Used appropriately, it can help reduce the chance of driving a fastener too far or damaging the workpiece. Setting counts and clutch designs vary by model; a higher count by itself is not a universal quality measure.
| Model | Clutch specification | Other relevant manufacturer specifications |
|---|---|---|
| DEWALT DCD706F2 | 15 clutch settings | Two-speed transmission; 250 UWO; 6.6-inch front-to-back length |
| Milwaukee 2902-20 | 18 clutch settings | Two speed settings; 725 in-lbs maximum torque; included side handle |
| Makita GPH01Z | Electronic digital clutch: 41 settings in low speed and 21 in high speed | 40V max XGT brushless 1/2-inch hammer driver-drill |
These figures are model specifications from the manufacturers, not independent findings that one drill fastens better. Choose based on the control you need, along with the drill’s speed ranges and the kinds of fasteners and materials you work with.

3. Hammer action and bind response solve different problems
Hammer action for masonry drilling
A hammer-drill mode adds percussive action while the bit rotates, helping with masonry drilling. Makita describes the GPH01Z’s hammer mode for masonry. Hammer-drill mode is not interchangeable with a rotary hammer for every concrete job; choose the tool for the material and workload.

Makita’s GPH01Z also has Active Feedback-sensing Technology (AFT), which Makita says turns off the motor if rotation of the accessory is suddenly forced to stop. That bind-response behavior is separate from hammer action: one concerns a sudden stop, while the other adds percussion for drilling.

How to compare drills for your work
- Start with the task. Separate fastening and wood or metal drilling from masonry drilling; a hammer-drill mode is relevant to the latter.
- Check control. Compare clutch type and settings, speed ranges, and trigger control rather than relying on the clutch count alone.
- Consider handling and safety. Look for a side handle when appropriate and check whether the model documents a bind-response feature.
- Compare the complete package. Check voltage platform, chuck size, battery and charger inclusion, kit contents, and compatibility with batteries you already own.
For example, the DEWALT DCD706F2 page lists a 3/8-inch ratcheting chuck and LED foot light; Milwaukee lists a 1/2-inch all-metal ratcheting chuck on the 2902-20. Makita lists 1,250 in-lbs maximum torque for the GPH01Z and claims up to 35% faster drilling than its specified XPH07 18V model. The torque figure is a manufacturer specification, and the speed figure is Makita’s comparison against that named model—not an independent or general result.
