The buttons on a Breville espresso machine are model-specific. A 1 Cup button, milk controls, touchscreen menu, and grind adjustment can work differently across the range. Find the model number on the label underneath or behind the machine, or on its original packaging, then use the matching section below. Breville’s support catalog covers 14 espresso-machine models, including Bambino, Barista Express, Barista Touch, and Oracle lines.
The instructions below are tied to the Bambino Plus BES500, Bambino BES450, Barista Touch BES880, and Barista Express Impress BES876 manuals and product specifications. Revisions and regional editions can differ, so confirm the exact manual before changing an unfamiliar setting.
Why the model number matters
Breville uses similar names for machines with different interfaces. The Bambino Plus BES500 has dedicated shot, milk-temperature, and milk-foam buttons. The simpler Bambino BES450 has 1 Cup, 2 Cup, Hot Water, and Steam buttons instead. The Barista Touch BES880 presents drink controls on a touchscreen, while its grind size is changed with a physical dial. The Barista Express Impress BES876 uses a button-led interface and provides 25 grind settings.

Bambino Plus BES500: what each control does
1 Cup and 2 Cup buttons
On the Bambino Plus, 1 Cup selects the programmed single-shot volume and 2 Cup selects the programmed double-shot volume. The BES500 manual describes the presets as approximately 30 ml for a single and approximately 60 ml for a double. These are programmed water volumes, not a promise that every coffee dose, cup, or beverage will be the same size. Coffee dose, grind, tamping, and the cup itself still affect the drink you obtain.
Press the appropriate button for an automatic extraction. The machine stops at the saved volume. If you need a different yield for a particular coffee, change the saved shot volume rather than assuming that the 1 Cup label means a universal espresso recipe.
Manual pre-infusion and extraction
The BES500 also allows a manual sequence when you want direct control over the start of the shot:
- Place the prepared portafilter in the group head and position the cup.
- Press and hold 1 Cup or 2 Cup. Holding the button begins manual pre-infusion.
- Release the button when you want extraction to begin.
- Press the same button again when the desired amount has flowed. The flashing button stops the extraction.
This procedure is different from a normal quick press. Holding the button is the action that starts the pre-infusion phase; releasing it moves into extraction.
Programming a new shot volume
To save a different automatic volume on the Bambino Plus:
- Press and hold both shot buttons for two seconds to enter programming.
- Press the shot button you want to program.
- Let the coffee run until the cup contains the amount you want.
- Press that same shot button again to stop the flow and save the new volume.
The setting applies to the selected 1 Cup or 2 Cup button. Programming the single button does not automatically change the double button.
Milk Temp button
Milk Temp cycles through three settings: Warm, Ideal, and Hot. This controls the target milk temperature during the automatic milk-texturing process; it is separate from the amount of foam.

- BALANCED-TASTING CUP: Manual espresso machine features low pressure pre infusion that gradually increases pressure at the start; All flavors are drawn out evenly during the extraction
- RECEIVE 2 FREE BAGS OF SPECIALTY COFFEE: Included when you purchase and register any Breville coffee machine; T&Cs apply
- HOME ESPRESSO MACHINE WITH PRECISE EXTRACTION: Digital temperature regulation (PID) delivers water at precisely the right temperature, allowing for even espresso extraction
Milk Foam button
Milk Foam cycles through Low, Medium, and High. It controls the target amount of aeration. Milk and plant-based alternatives behave differently, so the same foam level can produce different textures with different cartons. If a drink is too bubbly or too flat, change the foam setting independently of Milk Temp.
Remembered milk settings
The Bambino Plus retains the last selected milk-temperature and milk-foam settings when it is turned on. If a later drink seems hotter, cooler, foamier, or flatter than expected, check both settings before changing coffee dose or grind.
Bambino BES450: similar names, different buttons
The standard Bambino BES450 comparison lists 1 Cup, 2 Cup, Hot Water, and Steam buttons. It does not use the Bambino Plus control labels for Milk Temp and Milk Foam. Consequently, instructions that tell you to cycle Warm, Ideal, or Hot, or Low, Medium, or High, should not be applied to the BES450.
Use 1 Cup and 2 Cup for the shot selections shown on the BES450 panel, Steam for manual milk texturing, and Hot Water for a water dispense. For programming, indicator behavior, and any long-press sequence, follow the BES450 manual rather than the BES500 procedure.

Choosing a drink and opening its settings
On the Barista Touch, select a beverage from the touchscreen menu. The drink screen exposes the controls relevant to that recipe. The manual shows controls for grind duration, milk temperature, milk froth level, and brew settings. Espresso can be configured for a single, double, or custom extraction time. Americano offers size choices.
The labels are contextual: the controls shown for an espresso need not be identical to those shown for an Americano. Change the drink first, then adjust the values displayed on that drink’s screen and follow the on-screen prompts to start the cycle.
Where to change grind size
Grind size is adjusted with the dial on the side of the machine. The Barista Touch manual explicitly states that the grind size cannot be changed by touching the on-screen button. The screen can expose grind duration, but that is not the same control as the physical grind-size dial.

Make small dial changes and allow the grinder to dose again before judging the result. A grind-size change alters how quickly water passes through the coffee, so evaluate the next complete extraction rather than stopping at the first drip.

Keeping the touchscreen usable
Keep the touchscreen dry and clean. Moisture or coffee residue can make taps unreliable and can obscure the values you are trying to select. Wipe it according to the care instructions in the BES880 manual, and do not treat an unresponsive tap as evidence that the drink setting itself is unavailable.
Barista Express Impress BES876: button controls and grinder settings
Grind settings
Breville lists 25 grind settings for the Barista Express Impress. The setting changes the fineness of the integrated grinder’s output; it is not a shot-volume button. Use a finer setting when the current grind runs too quickly, or a coarser setting when it runs too slowly, then reassess the resulting extraction. Make changes incrementally because a large jump can make the next shot difficult to diagnose.
Shot and brew controls
The BES876 provides preset single and double shot controls, adjustable brew temperature, and adjustable volumetric shot control. A preset shot is a starting program; volumetric adjustment changes how much water the machine dispenses for the selected shot. Brew temperature is a separate variable and should not be confused with milk temperature.
Manual milk texturing and hot water
The Barista Express Impress uses manual milk texturing rather than the Bambino Plus’s separate automatic Milk Temp and Milk Foam buttons. Use its steam controls and your own jug position to create the texture you want. Its control set also includes hot water, so the hot-water function is not hidden inside a Bambino Plus-style milk menu.

The machine has a 54 mm portafilter. Replacement baskets or portafilters must match the model and the basket style; a 54 mm measurement alone does not prove that an accessory is compatible.
How to change the setting you actually need
To change shot size
- Identify the model number first.
- On a Bambino Plus BES500, use the two-second both-buttons programming sequence, run the chosen 1 Cup or 2 Cup button to the desired amount, and press it again to save.
- On a Barista Touch BES880, select the beverage, choose single, double, or custom extraction time on the drink screen, and follow the displayed start and stop prompts.
- On a Barista Express Impress BES876, use its volumetric shot control procedure from the BES876 manual; do not substitute the Bambino Plus sequence.
To change milk temperature or foam
- Confirm that the machine is a Bambino Plus BES500. The regular Bambino BES450 does not use these Plus labels.
- Press Milk Temp to cycle Warm, Ideal, and Hot.
- Press Milk Foam to cycle Low, Medium, and High.
- Steam or texture the milk using the selected targets, remembering that different milks can produce different results at the same setting.
To change grind size
- On a Barista Touch BES880, turn the physical dial on the side; do not tap the on-screen grind setting expecting the dial to move.
- On a Barista Express Impress BES876, select among its 25 grinder settings using the grinder control specified in the manual.
- On a Bambino panel with no grinder controls, inspect the separate grinder or the exact model documentation rather than looking for a hidden machine button.
Troubleshooting an unexpected button or result
The machine has a control your guide does not mention
That usually indicates a different model or revision. Recheck the model label, then open the regional manual for that exact designation. Breville’s catalog spans multiple lines, and similarly named machines are not interchangeable.

- MANUAL HAND-TEXTURED MICROFOAM: The powerful steam wand included with this cappuccino and latte machine is designed to quickly turn milk into smooth, flavorful microfoam for latte art at home
- INTELLIGENT DOSING: The smart dosing system in this bean-to-cup espresso machine automatically calculates and adjusts the level of fresh coffee for a precise dose, every time
- PRECISION MEASURMENT: Espresso coffee maker also includes a smart system which auto corrects the next dose, taking the guesswork out of manual espresso making
- RECEIVE 2 FREE BAGS OF SPECIALTY COFFEE: Included when you purchase and register any Breville coffee machine; T&Cs apply
- ASSISTED TAMPING: Replicating the action of a professional barista, assisted tamping features 7 degree 'barista twist' finish and consistent 10kg of pressure, for a polished puck surface and clean tamp face
The shot is larger or smaller than expected
On the Bambino Plus, remember that 1 Cup and 2 Cup are saved programmed volumes, approximately 30 ml and 60 ml in the BES500 manual, not fixed cup-size guarantees. A previous programming change may have altered the automatic stop point. Reprogram the relevant button if needed.
The milk texture changed after restarting
Check both Bambino Plus milk settings. The machine remembers the last Milk Temp and Milk Foam choices, so the previous user’s selections may still be active. Also account for the milk type, because the same target level does not create identical foam in every milk.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The touchscreen setting will not change grind size
On the Barista Touch, this is expected behavior: grind size is controlled by the physical side dial. The touchscreen exposes grind duration and drink settings, but it is not the grind-size adjustment.
An accessory does not fit
Check the exact model, portafilter diameter, basket design, and regional version. The BES876 uses a 54 mm portafilter, but accessories still need model and basket compatibility confirmation. Breville also lists cleaning tablets, descaling solutions, and filters; select supplies only after confirming they are intended for your machine.
Choosing the right control style
For the simplest physical interaction, the Bambino panels and the Barista Express Impress rely on dedicated buttons. The Bambino Plus adds independent automatic milk targets, while the BES876 adds a grinder with 25 settings, brew-temperature adjustment, volumetric shot control, and manual milk texturing. The Barista Touch is better suited to people who want recipe-specific settings on one screen, including extraction choice, milk temperature, froth, and grind duration, but its grind-size adjustment still requires a physical dial.
Those differences are functional, not merely cosmetic. Before buying a replacement machine or accessory, decide whether you need touchscreen drink recipes, automatic milk targets, an integrated grinder, manual steaming, or a dedicated hot-water button. Then verify that the exact model provides that control.
Bottom line
Start with the model number, not the button name. On the Bambino Plus, 1 Cup and 2 Cup manage programmable shot volumes, while Milk Temp and Milk Foam independently set automatic milk targets. The regular Bambino has a different, simpler panel. The Barista Touch combines a drink touchscreen with a physical grind dial, and the Barista Express Impress combines button control with 25 grind settings and adjustable brew variables. When a control or sequence does not match these descriptions, use the exact Breville manual for your model and region.
