Audiovisual (AV) technology is the equipment and integrated systems used to communicate audio and/or video. Information technology (IT) concerns systems—especially computers and telecommunications—used to store, retrieve, process, and send information. AV/IT describes the way those systems can be integrated, while information and communications technology (ICT) is a broader umbrella for communications technologies and services.
What is audiovisual technology?
AV technology is more than an individual screen, speaker, or microphone. It can include equipment configured to work together as one system to communicate audio or video to an audience. An AVIXA higher-education infrastructure guideline, published in 2021, describes an audiovisual system as a set of specified audio and video components designed and configured to operate together as a comprehensive system. That is an industry-guide definition, not a universal legal definition.
For example, a meeting room might combine microphones, speakers, displays, cameras, and control equipment. The components form an AV system when they are configured to work together for the intended communication task.

What does information technology mean?
IT refers to the study or use of systems—particularly computers and telecommunications—for storing, retrieving, processing, and sending information. It can describe a field of work, an organization’s technology environment, or the systems used to handle information.

The term IT equipment can have a narrower meaning in a specific regulation. For example, EU Regulation 2023/826 defines IT equipment for its regulatory scope by its main functions, which may include entering, storing, displaying, retrieving, transmitting, processing, switching, or controlling data or telecommunications. That functional definition serves the regulation; it is not a complete everyday definition of IT as a field.
How AV, IT, and ICT differ

These categories overlap, but they are not interchangeable. AV centers on audio and video communication. IT centers on information systems. ICT spans a wider range of communications technologies and services, including some that may also be part of AV or IT.

What does AV/IT integration involve?
AV/IT integration means that audiovisual systems use or share IT infrastructure, such as network connections and equipment. It does not mean that every AV device works with every network or that AV and IT have become the same discipline.
One example is Audio Video Bridging (AVB), a family of technologies that carries AV traffic over standard Ethernet. AVIXA’s glossary notes that AVB requires compatible, AVB-enabled network components, including switches that support quality-of-service prioritization. The relevant compatibility and traffic-handling requirements depend on the system.

How do AV equipment and infrastructure differ?
An AV system is the coordinated equipment and configuration used to communicate audio or video. Infrastructure is the physical building support that makes installations possible. AVIXA defines audiovisual infrastructure as building components that provide pathways, supports, and architectural elements for technical AV installations. An audiovisual rack, by contrast, is a housing unit for electronic equipment.
These distinctions matter in planning: the equipment performs the communication task, while infrastructure provides physical routes, mounting, and equipment housing. The specific installation requirements depend on the building and system.

When are AV, IT, and ICT standards relevant?
Professional standards and guidance can help teams document systems, verify performance, manage energy, label cables, or design equipment racks. AVIXA describes its standards as industry-recognized best practices and lists examples including ANSI/AVIXA D401.01:2023 for project documentation, ANSI/AVIXA D402.02:2013 (R2024) for performance verification, and F502.02:2020 (R2023) for rack design. Check AVIXA’s standards catalog for current listings and access terms.
Not every standard applies to every project. The AVIXA higher-education guideline cautions that general AV standards may not cover every institution’s requirements, so a project may need additional requirements specific to its setting.

Accessibility can also be addressed through technical specifications. ISO/IEC TS 20071-21:2015 covers audio description of audiovisual content; ISO reports that the edition was reviewed and confirmed in 2024 and remains current. It is an accessibility-related specification, not a general definition of AV or IT.
