macOS accounted for 1.92% of respondents in Steam’s combined-platform Hardware & Software Survey in September 2026. That is a snapshot of Steam survey participants’ computer configurations—not the percentage of Mac owners who game, or a measure of game purchases, play time, or all Mac gaming. Valve says participation is optional and anonymous.
How much of Steam is Mac?
In Steam’s September 2026 combined Windows, macOS, and Linux survey view, the macOS entry was 1.92%. Valve also reported a month-to-month change of −0.22 percentage points. That single-month movement should not be treated as evidence of a lasting decline: monthly survey results can fluctuate, and a longer time series is needed to assess a trend.
The statistic answers a narrow question: what share of respondents in that month’s combined-platform survey were represented by the macOS category? It does not establish how many Mac owners use Steam or how much gaming happens outside Steam. Valve describes the survey as a monthly collection of information about customers’ hardware and software, with optional, anonymous participation; it is useful as a recurring snapshot, not a census of all players.

Steam’s Mac-only survey view has a different denominator from the combined-platform percentage. Its figures describe respondents in the Mac-only view, not all Steam respondents or the wider Mac population.

| Mac-only survey category | September 2026 result | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Model summary | MacBookPro: 16.54% | The largest model-summary category shown; “MacBookPro” is a survey label, not one specific configuration or a gaming recommendation. |
| Memory | 16 GB: 43.55%; 8 GB: 28.66% | Reported memory categories among Mac respondents, not game requirements or recommended minimums. |
| Graphics | Apple M4: 17.89% | The leading named graphics entry in the Mac-only graphics table, not a total Apple Silicon share. |
| Processor vendor | GenuineIntel: 10.20% | A separate Mac-only processor-vendor table; it is not directly comparable to the graphics entry. |
These are separate survey dimensions, so they should not be added together or treated as parts of a single distribution. For example, the MacBookPro category does not tell you which chip or memory configuration those respondents have. Nor does its leading position mean that a MacBook Pro is the best Mac for gaming.
Does the survey show Apple Silicon gaining share?
It shows that Apple M4 appears as a named graphics entry, at 17.89% of the Mac-only graphics table in September 2026. It also lists GenuineIntel at 10.20% in a distinct processor-vendor table. Those rows use different hardware classifications and do not provide a clean aggregate count of Apple Silicon Macs.

Steam’s reported entries therefore do not establish what percentage of Mac respondents use Apple Silicon, or whether that percentage is rising year over year. The M4 figure is a scoped indicator of one named graphics entry—not a proxy for every Apple Silicon processor or a complete measure of adoption.

The survey describes configurations, not whether games run well. Compatibility and performance depend on the specific title and machine. To assess a game, check whether it has a supported macOS version, whether it runs natively on Apple Silicon or through a compatibility layer, and whether its launcher or anti-cheat requirements work with the Mac and operating system you plan to use.

For performance, look for a benchmark of the exact game and Mac configuration, including chip, resolution, graphics settings, and measured frame rate. The survey’s 8 GB and 16 GB memory categories describe respondents; they do not set a game’s minimum or recommended memory. A complete current list of compatible games is not established by Steam’s hardware survey or Apple’s Tahoe feature description.

Why developer survey results are a different kind of evidence
The 2026 GDC State of the Game Industry report includes Mac in its platform results, but its questions concern developers’ recent projects and interest. That is developer-side context, not a count of Mac players or a measure of Steam activity. Use player-platform survey data to discuss player configurations, and developer survey data only to discuss developers.
