The figures are reported match counts, not a tally of confirmed exposed or compromised systems. A DEV Community listing dated September 23, 2026, gives the title “1,539 Jenkins Matches and 212 GitLab Matches: Measuring CI/CD Controllers as an Attack Surface.” The accessible listing does not establish when or how the counts were collected, so they cannot show how many controllers are currently reachable—or whether Jenkins is more exposed than GitLab.
What the reported numbers mean
The September 23, 2026 DEV Community listing reports 1,539 Jenkins matches and 212 GitLab matches. It associates the article with ZoomEye, GitLab, source control, and exposure measurement. These are figures from the listing’s title, not independently validated counts or a census of CI/CD deployments. DEV Community
An internet-facing search service can return matches based on identifying signals, but a match alone does not establish that a system is live, reachable now, vulnerable, compromised, or owned by a particular organization. The listing’s accessible material does not quantify the possibility of stale results or mistaken identification.
Why the counts cannot rank Jenkins and GitLab exposure
The larger Jenkins figure does not prove that Jenkins is more exposed or riskier. A meaningful comparison would need collection dates, comparable search queries or fingerprints, consistent deduplication, equivalent geographic and network scope, and a denominator showing the number of deployments assessed. The accessible listing provides none of these details.

Without a denominator, the counts cannot tell you what share of either product’s deployments is exposed. Without matching collection and validation methods, the difference between the two reported numbers cannot be interpreted as a difference in prevalence or risk.
How to check whether your controller is exposed
- Start with authorized inventory. Identify the Jenkins and GitLab instances your organization operates, their expected hostnames and network locations, and the teams responsible for them. Use an inventory you are authorized to access rather than assuming that a public search result belongs to your organization.
- Verify suspected exposure directly. From an approved network or assessment process, check whether the hostname or address resolves to your service and whether it is reachable from the public internet. Confirm the service identity and ownership with your internal records. A search-engine result is a lead to verify, not proof of current exposure.
- Review access boundaries. For any controller confirmed to be publicly reachable, assess whether its public access is intentional and whether authentication and authorization are correctly enforced. Restrict access to the users and networks that need it.
- Harden the deployment. Jenkins security guidance identifies authentication, plugin management, and agent isolation as relevant areas to review. Apply the guidance appropriate to your installation and operating model. Jenkins security guidance
What the available report does not establish
- The date the underlying scan or collection ran.
- The exact queries, fingerprints, or validation procedure used.
- The geographic or network scope and how duplicates were handled.
- Whether a match was currently reachable, vulnerable, compromised, or attributable to an organization.
Those details would be needed to reproduce or interpret the measurement more precisely. The title-level figures should therefore be treated as reported matches, not as a current inventory or a security finding about either product.
