Roku does not provide a normal network-menu field for entering a DNS server. Your Roku normally receives DNS information automatically from the router, so a DNS change must usually be made in the router or other network equipment supplying its connection. That can help with a specific name-resolution problem or a provider’s Smart DNS setup, but it is not a general cure for buffering, weak Wi-Fi, slow broadband, or an ISP outage.

Start with Roku’s connection test and signal information. If those checks show a network or Internet failure, fix that underlying problem before changing DNS.

Can you change DNS directly on a Roku?

Roku’s user-facing setup flow covers joining a Wi-Fi network or connecting Ethernet, but it does not describe a control for manually entering primary and secondary DNS servers. Private Internet Access Support states this directly in its Roku Smart DNS guide: “Roku devices do not let you enter DNS settings directly on the device.” That article was dated July 6, 2026 and describes a vendor-specific setup, not a new Roku menu option.

In practice, the router gives the Roku an IP address, gateway and DNS information through the network connection. To use different DNS servers, you normally edit the router’s DNS configuration. The exact administration screen varies by router model and firmware, so there is no single Roku-compatible menu path to quote.

Roku developer documentation includes fields such as dns.0 and subsequent DNS entries in connection information. Those fields let an application inspect reported connection details; they are not an editable DNS control in Roku settings.

What DNS does for Roku streaming

DNS, or the Domain Name System, translates a hostname into an Internet address. When a Roku app needs to contact a service, the device or network resolver looks up the service’s hostname before the connection can be made. A failed or unusable lookup can prevent an app from finding a service even when the Roku is connected to the local Wi-Fi network.

Changing DNS does not increase the radio strength between the Roku and router, add broadband capacity, repair a failing modem, or make a congested streaming service deliver more data. It changes the resolver used for hostname lookups. Once a service address has been resolved, the video stream still depends on the Internet path, Wi-Fi quality, available bandwidth and the app’s own requirements.

When a router DNS change can be useful

A specific name-resolution failure

A DNS change is reasonable as a targeted diagnostic when other network functions work but hostnames fail to resolve. For example, a Roku might remain associated with the home network while a particular service repeatedly reports that it cannot connect. You should first confirm that the same network can reach public websites from another device and that Roku’s connection check is not reporting a broader Internet failure.

Changing DNS is not proof that DNS was the cause. Test one controlled change at a time, record the original router setting, and restore it if the symptom does not improve.

A provider’s Smart DNS configuration

Some services provide Smart DNS addresses for a particular setup. In that case, changing the router’s DNS is part of configuring that service, rather than a Roku performance tweak. Private Internet Access documents this kind of Roku workflow through router DNS settings.

Smart DNS is not the same as a VPN. Private Internet Access says its Smart DNS does not encrypt Internet traffic and does not hide the device’s IP address. DNS alone therefore should not be presented as a privacy or security replacement for encryption. Service availability, supported devices and streaming catalogs can also change; follow the provider’s current instructions instead of copying an address from an unverified guide.

When DNS is unlikely to fix the symptom

Roku’s own troubleshooting separates local network access from access to the Internet. Its connection-check article says: “The device will test whether it sees your network and whether it can reach the Internet.” If the Roku cannot see the network, changing DNS cannot help because DNS is consulted only after basic network configuration is working.

Weak or unstable Wi-Fi

A low signal, walls, interference or distance can cause pauses and disconnects. Verify the selected network and password, move the Roku or router to reduce obstacles, and restart both devices. Roku guidance also suggests trying the other Wi-Fi band when the Roku and router support it. Some routers allow a manual channel choice when automatic channel selection contributes to intermittent or slow connections.

No Internet beyond the router

If Roku reports that it is connected to the network but cannot reach the Internet, test a public website from a phone or computer on the same network. If that device also fails, Roku says an ISP outage is likely. Restart the router and Roku, check the provider’s outage information, and contact the ISP if the failure continues. A DNS edit on the router will not restore an upstream connection that is down.

Buffering or choppy video

Buffering is usually a signal, bandwidth, congestion or service-path issue rather than a DNS issue. Roku Support UK lists these typical download requirements in its 2026 guidance:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Video quality Roku-published typical download requirement
Standard definition (SD) 3 Mbps
High definition (HD) 5 Mbps
4K Ultra HD 25 Mbps or more

These are Roku’s published guidance, not independent test results. Other devices using the connection and an individual app’s requirements can raise the bandwidth needed at a given moment. Check the measured connection and signal before treating buffering as a DNS problem.

Run Roku’s checks before editing DNS

  1. Open the connection test. On the Roku home screen, go to Settings > Network > Check connection.
  2. Read both results. The test indicates whether Roku sees the local network and whether it can reach the Internet. A failure at the network stage points to Wi-Fi, Ethernet, credentials or equipment rather than DNS.
  3. Review recent details. Go to Settings > Network > About to view recent connection results and network information.
  4. Compare another device. On the same Wi-Fi network, open a public website. If the second device also cannot connect, investigate the router, modem or ISP.
  5. Check signal and speed. Address weak signal, competing bandwidth use and a speed below the level needed for the video quality you are watching.
  6. Restart in a controlled order. Restart the Roku and networking equipment, then run the connection test again before changing any advanced setting.

How to change DNS for a Roku through the router

Router interfaces differ by manufacturer, model and firmware. Roku recommends consulting the router manual or manufacturer for configuration help, and you should use the DNS provider’s current instructions rather than an arbitrary address.

  1. Identify the router. Find its model and firmware information so you can use the correct administration instructions.
  2. Record the existing DNS values. Take a screenshot or write down the current primary and secondary settings. This gives you a precise rollback point.
  3. Open the router administration page. Use the management method documented for that router. The DNS controls may be under Internet, WAN, DHCP or a similarly named network section; the label is manufacturer-dependent.
  4. Enter only trusted values. If a specific Smart DNS provider gave you addresses, enter those exactly. Do not paste addresses from an unrelated list or combine values from different services.
  5. Save or apply the configuration. The router may briefly restart its Internet connection while applying the change.
  6. Reconnect and test. Restart the Roku if necessary, run Settings > Network > Check connection, and test the affected app.
  7. Roll back if needed. Restore the recorded values if connectivity worsens, other devices lose access, or the intended service does not work.

A router-level DNS setting can affect every device that receives DNS information from that router, not just the Roku. The precise scope depends on the router’s configuration; some networks allow per-device or per-network overrides, while others apply one setting broadly.

Smart DNS on Roku: what it changes and what it does not

In a Smart DNS setup, the provider supplies DNS addresses intended to direct selected service lookups through its system. The Roku still connects through your ordinary Internet service. The provider’s instructions typically require locating DNS settings in the router administration page, entering the supplied Smart DNS address, saving, and restarting the router and Roku.

If your goal is privacy on the network, Smart DNS is the wrong control to describe as encryption. If your goal is resolving a specific service configuration problem, follow that service’s current setup and support documentation.

Choose the fix that matches the symptom

Observed symptom First action Role of a DNS change
Roku cannot see the Wi-Fi network Verify network selection, password, signal, distance and router operation Not useful until the Roku has a working network connection
Roku sees the router but cannot reach the Internet Test another device, restart equipment and check with the ISP if the outage affects the whole network Unlikely to repair an ISP or modem failure
Video buffers or becomes choppy Check signal, available bandwidth, other device usage and the app’s requirements Not established as a general buffering fix
A specific hostname or service fails while the network otherwise works Compare another device and test the service’s documented DNS configuration Potentially useful as a targeted diagnostic
You are following a Smart DNS provider’s Roku instructions Apply the provider’s addresses at the router and test the Roku afterward The central configuration step for that provider’s service

Further troubleshooting if the problem remains

Try another Wi-Fi band

If both the Roku and router support more than one band, switch bands and repeat the connection test. A band that is faster in one room may be less reliable through walls; the useful choice depends on the physical layout and interference around your equipment.

Use Ethernet where supported

Some Roku models support wired Ethernet. A wired test removes the Wi-Fi radio and channel from the diagnosis. If streaming works over Ethernet but not Wi-Fi, focus on signal, interference, channel selection and router placement rather than DNS.

Update Roku software

Install available Roku software updates and retest. Updates can address device-side compatibility or connection issues, although they do not change the fact that DNS is normally supplied by the network.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reserve a factory reset for later

Roku places factory reset among later troubleshooting steps. It erases device configuration and requires setup again, so use it only after checking the network, restarting equipment, trying an alternate connection and confirming that the issue is not an ISP or service outage.

Safety and rollback rules

  • Keep the original router DNS values before editing anything.
  • Change one setting at a time so you can identify what affected the result.
  • Use addresses from a provider you intentionally chose and whose instructions match your router and region.
  • Expect a router-wide effect when the router distributes the new DNS values through DHCP.
  • Restore the prior settings if browsing or streaming becomes less reliable.
  • Contact the router manufacturer or ISP when the administration page, WAN connection or DHCP behavior is unclear.

The practical rule is simple: use DNS as a focused configuration or diagnostic tool, not as a default Roku speed setting. Roku’s connection check, signal, bandwidth and ISP status should determine the next step.
