DLSS in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered on Switch 2 reconstructs each frame from a dynamically changing render resolution to a higher output target. Technical-review findings report a 540p–1080p render range targeting 1080p when docked, and 360p–720p targeting 720p in handheld mode. The result is a substantially cleaner presentation than the original Switch release, but a 1080p output target does not mean the game renders natively at 1080p in every scene.
What DLSS is doing in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered
DLSS, or Deep Learning Super Sampling, is an image-reconstruction technique. Instead of drawing every frame at the final resolution shown on the television or screen, the game can render at a lower, variable resolution and use temporal information from previous frames to reconstruct an image for the desired output.

That distinction matters on Switch 2. The console has a fixed performance budget, while The Witcher 3 contains large outdoor areas, dense vegetation, detailed characters, lighting effects and long view distances. Rendering every frame at the final output resolution would consume more of that budget. A reconstruction pass gives the game another way to balance detail, stability and frame rendering cost.

Senior Publishing Producer Oleg Shatulo said the studio carried lessons from Cyberpunk 2077 into the project, but did not simply copy that implementation:

“Our experience with Cyberpunk 2077 definitely gave us a strong foundation for working with DLSS on Nintendo Switch 2. We learned a lot about how to get the most out of the technology on the hardware, and we were able to carry that experience into The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered.”
“At the same time, the two games are quite different technically, so it wasn’t simply a matter of taking what we had done for Cyberpunk and applying it directly. The Witcher 3 has its own rendering pipeline, content, and performance characteristics, and we had to tune the implementation specifically around those.”
That is a confirmation of game-specific tuning, not a published list of numerical settings. The developer has not stated the Switch 2 DLSS model or version, nor supplied a per-scene resolution log.

Reported resolutions: docked versus handheld
Digital Foundry findings, as summarized by Nintendo Life in 2026, give the clearest published figures for the Switch 2 version. They describe dynamic render ranges and separate output targets for the two play modes.
| Play mode | Reported dynamic render range | Output target | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Docked | 540p–1080p | 1080p | The internal render can move below the target; DLSS reconstructs the image for a 1080p output. |
| Handheld | 360p–720p | 720p | The internal render can move below the target; DLSS reconstructs the image for a 720p output. |
These are technical-review findings, not official publisher specifications. A range does not reveal how long the game remains at any particular resolution. It also does not mean that every demanding scene reaches the lower bound or that every clear scene reaches the upper bound.
For example, a frame rendered internally at a resolution below 1080p while docked can still be sent to the display as a 1080p image after reconstruction. Calling that “1080p output” is accurate; calling it native 1080p rendering would be misleading. Native rendering would mean that the scene was drawn at 1920×1080 before any upscaling or reconstruction step.
What this means for visible image quality
A higher output target is not automatically native-level detail
DLSS can make a lower-resolution input appear more detailed than a conventional upscale because it uses information across frames and applies a reconstruction algorithm tailored to the game. It cannot create unlimited original geometry or texture information. Fine foliage, thin wires, distant silhouettes and fast-moving objects remain difficult cases for any reconstruction method.

The available review summary describes image quality as a highlight of the Remastered edition and calls it a vast improvement over the original Switch release. It specifically points to more detailed environments and upgraded scenery and character texture assets. That assessment is qualitative: the published material does not provide a controlled image-quality score, a pixel-by-pixel comparison, or a measured sharpness increase.
Why docked and handheld can look different
Docked mode has a 1080p output target and a higher reported render ceiling, while handheld mode targets 720p and has a lower range. On a television, the docked image is being reconstructed for more output pixels, so distant details and interface elements have more screen resolution available. On the built-in display, the 720p target is appropriate to the handheld presentation, but the lower 360p floor leaves less source detail for reconstruction in demanding moments.
The review summary observes a visible difference between docked and handheld presentation. That does not imply that one mode is defective; they are using different output targets and different dynamic ranges.
What the sources do not establish
- They do not quantify a sharpness gain over native rendering or over the original Switch version.
- They do not report the percentage of play time spent at each point in the dynamic range.
- They do not verify a specific rate of ghosting, shimmer, crawling foliage or other reconstruction artifacts.
- They do not show whether a later Switch 2 patch changed the launch-build behavior.
- They do not prove that every scene reaches the stated maximum or minimum resolution.
Those limits are important when reading claims that the game is “always 1080p,” “native 1080p,” or guaranteed to have no artifacts. None of those conclusions follows from the published range alone.

DLSS on Switch 2 versus the PC feature list
The official Remastered feature article names “DLSS 4.5 with Ray Reconstruction” in its PC-specific feature section. That statement should not be transferred to Switch 2. The Switch 2 interview confirms DLSS and game-specific tuning, but it does not name a DLSS version and does not say that Ray Reconstruction is enabled on the console edition.
Platform attribution matters because feature names can describe different implementations. The safe conclusion is that Switch 2 uses a tuned DLSS reconstruction solution; the exact model, feature set and internal settings have not been published in the cited material.
How to judge the image yourself
If you own both display options, compare the same location rather than relying on a menu screenshot. A useful check is to revisit a settlement, forest edge and open landscape in consistent lighting.

- Play docked and note small, distant details such as roof lines, branches, railings and signs.
- Move the camera slowly, then rotate quickly. Reconstruction behavior is easier to notice during motion than in a static image.
- Inspect foliage, hair, fences and other thin geometry at normal viewing distance; these areas reveal temporal instability more readily than large walls.
- Repeat the check in handheld mode. Judge it at the distance you normally hold the console, not with an extreme zoom that exaggerates pixels.
- Do not treat one scene as proof of the whole game. The reported resolution is dynamic, so the internal render can change with scene complexity.
This process can tell you what your display and viewing distance reveal, but it is not a controlled laboratory test. It cannot establish a general artifact rate or replace the technical measurements reported by reviewers.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered for Switch 2 released on September 29, 2026. It includes the base game, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine.
Owners of the original Switch edition can claim the Remastered version on Switch 2 at no additional cost. The publisher’s announcement explicitly includes physical-copy owners. Existing owners therefore do not need to buy another copy simply to obtain the Switch 2 edition, although they should follow the upgrade process for their region and account.
The original Switch Complete Edition was released digitally and at retail on a game card, with the base game, both story expansions and 16 free DLCs. If you do not already own a qualifying edition, verify the current listing, edition and regional upgrade terms before purchasing; historical packaging alone does not establish present stock or eligibility.
What DLSS changes—and what it does not
What it changes
- It allows the game to target a higher displayed resolution than its current internal render resolution.
- It gives the renderer room to vary resolution with scene demands instead of locking every frame to one internal pixel count.
- It contributes to the substantial visual step up that reviewers report over the original Switch release, alongside upgraded environment and character assets.
What it does not change
- It does not make every frame a native 1080p render in docked mode or a native 720p render in handheld mode.
- It does not guarantee identical detail in every scene, because the input resolution is dynamic.
- It does not by itself specify frame rate, frame-time stability or battery life; the cited sources give resolution and image-quality observations, not those measurements.
- It does not justify importing PC-only feature claims, such as the named DLSS 4.5 and Ray Reconstruction description, into the Switch 2 version.
The practical verdict for Switch 2 players
DLSS is a central part of how the Remastered edition presents The Witcher 3 within Switch 2’s performance limits. In docked play, the reported 540p–1080p dynamic render range is reconstructed toward a 1080p output; in handheld play, the reported 360p–720p range is reconstructed toward 720p. That approach produces a much cleaner image than the original Switch version according to technical-review reporting, while preserving the flexibility to lower internal resolution when a scene becomes expensive to render.
The accurate expectation is therefore “dynamic-resolution rendering with DLSS reconstruction,” not “native resolution at all times.” The sources support the improvement and the output targets, but not a numerical sharpness advantage, a guaranteed artifact-free image or a named Switch 2 DLSS version.
