DLSS is not one graphics setting. NVIDIA’s Deep Learning Super Sampling suite uses AI reconstruction, generated frames, ray-tracing denoising and native-resolution anti-aliasing as separate features. Depending on which feature a game supports, DLSS can raise rendered performance, smooth motion, improve ray-traced image quality or reduce jagged edges—while producing results that are not identical to a native-resolution render.

The practical choice depends on your output resolution, GPU generation, game implementation, ray-tracing workload and tolerance for reconstruction artifacts or generated-frame latency. Here is what each component does and how to evaluate it.

What DLSS does

DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) is NVIDIA’s suite of neural-rendering technologies for GeForce RTX graphics cards. The suite contains several independent functions:

  • DLSS Super Resolution reconstructs a higher-resolution image from lower-resolution input frames.
  • Frame Generation inserts AI-created frames between traditionally rendered frames.
  • Multi Frame Generation can create several displayed frames for each traditionally rendered frame on supported RTX 50 Series hardware.
  • Ray Reconstruction replaces hand-tuned denoisers in ray-traced effects with a neural reconstruction model.
  • DLAA uses related reconstruction technology for anti-aliasing while rendering at native resolution.

These features can be enabled separately or together when a game integrates them. NVIDIA’s current feature overview and compatibility table are at NVIDIA’s DLSS Technology page. The technical descriptions on NVIDIA Developer explain the reconstruction pipeline and supported integrations.

Because the features do different jobs, “DLSS on” does not describe one fixed image-quality or performance result. Super Resolution changes the rendered input resolution, Frame Generation changes how many frames are displayed, Ray Reconstruction changes ray-tracing denoising, and DLAA leaves the output resolution native.

How DLSS Super Resolution works

Super Resolution asks the game to render fewer input pixels than the final output requires. It then combines those lower-resolution images with motion information and feedback from previous frames to reconstruct a higher-resolution result. The GPU spends less time shading the initial image, leaving performance for a higher frame rate, more demanding graphics settings or ray tracing.

NVIDIA’s current developer description says its second-generation Transformer model is designed to improve temporal stability, anti-aliasing and visual clarity. Those are NVIDIA’s intended benefits, not a guarantee that every game, scene or output resolution will match native rendering. A game’s integration, motion vectors, UI treatment and reconstruction settings all affect the result.

What changes visually

At its best, Super Resolution preserves much of the scene’s fine structure while reducing the number of pixels the GPU must render directly. At other times, thin geometry, foliage, particles, distant detail or fast-moving edges can look different from native resolution. Temporal reconstruction may show shimmer, ghosting, instability or softened detail in particular scenes. The exact artifact pattern is game-dependent; there is no universal DLSS image-quality ranking that applies to every title.

Does DLSS improve graphics?

It can improve the overall experience by allowing a higher output resolution, ray-tracing setting or frame rate than the same GPU could sustain with native rendering. That does not mean every individual pixel is more accurate than native rendering. Compare the same scene at the same output resolution, with other settings unchanged, and inspect both still detail and camera movement.

DLSS Quality, Balanced and Performance modes

Games commonly expose several Super Resolution presets, often named Quality, Balanced and Performance. These labels indicate progressively more aggressive reconstruction from a lower-resolution input. The exact internal render resolutions are game- and output-dependent, so the label alone is not a universal specification.

  • Quality: the least aggressive reconstruction of the common presets. It is a sensible starting point when image detail matters and the native frame rate is close to your target.
  • Balanced: trades more input resolution for additional performance when Quality is not sufficient.
  • Performance: uses a substantially lower-resolution input to maximize frame-rate headroom. It can be useful at very high output resolutions or with demanding ray tracing, but moving detail deserves close inspection.

Use the preset that meets your frame-rate and responsiveness target without visible artifacts you find distracting. Do not assume that “Performance” is automatically wrong or that “Quality” is always optimal; the best choice changes with resolution, GPU load and the game’s implementation.

Frame Generation and Multi Frame Generation

Frame Generation uses AI to create an additional frame between traditionally rendered frames. The game simulation and input still advance on traditionally rendered frames; the inserted image is generated from visual and motion information rather than fully rendered by the game engine. NVIDIA pairs Frame Generation with Reflex to help maintain responsiveness, but the supplied NVIDIA material does not establish one latency value that applies to all games or settings.

Multi Frame Generation extends the idea on RTX 50 Series GPUs. NVIDIA says it can generate up to five frames per traditionally rendered frame. Dynamic Multi Frame Generation changes the multiplier according to the scene. These additional frames can raise the displayed frame-rate counter and make camera movement appear smoother, but a generated-frame rate is not equivalent to the rate at which the game simulation and input are natively updated.

Why displayed FPS and responsiveness differ

Suppose a game renders 60 conventional frames per second and generates extra images between them. The monitor may show a substantially higher displayed rate, yet the underlying game logic and input sampling are still based primarily on the conventional frames. Generated frames can improve perceived smoothness, while they cannot turn a very low base render rate into the same responsiveness as a genuinely high native render rate. Keep the traditionally rendered rate, frame-time consistency and input feel in view when evaluating the feature.

Ray Reconstruction

Ray Reconstruction is aimed specifically at ray-traced scenes. Ray tracing samples a limited number of rays, so games traditionally use hand-tuned denoisers to estimate the missing pixels. Ray Reconstruction replaces those denoisers with a trained neural network that generates pixels between sampled rays.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

NVIDIA says its second-generation Transformer model is intended to improve lighting accuracy, clarity during motion and temporal stability. Replacing multiple denoisers can also improve performance in demanding ray-tracing workloads. In a title with less intensive ray tracing and fewer denoisers, however, NVIDIA notes that Ray Reconstruction may improve image quality at a slight performance cost. Rasterized scenes have no ray-traced effects for this feature to process.

When to test it

Enable Ray Reconstruction only where the game offers it and where ray-traced effects are active. Compare reflective surfaces, indirect lighting, shadows and moving objects rather than judging a static non-ray-traced scene. Keep Super Resolution and Frame Generation choices constant during the comparison so you can isolate the denoiser change.

DLAA: native resolution anti-aliasing

DLAA (Deep Learning Anti-Aliasing) uses the Super Resolution technology for anti-aliasing at the display’s native resolution. Unlike Super Resolution, it does not intentionally lower the input resolution to raise performance. Its purpose is image quality: reducing jagged edges and temporal instability while accepting the full native-rendering workload.

DLAA is therefore a poor choice when your priority is additional frame rate and a useful choice when a GPU already has sufficient performance and you want anti-aliasing without upscaling. A game may offer DLAA instead of, or alongside, its Super Resolution presets.

Which RTX cards support each DLSS feature?

NVIDIA’s current compatibility table lists support by GPU generation as follows. Hardware support does not guarantee that a particular game includes every feature; the game must integrate it and expose the relevant option.

DLSS feature RTX generations listed by NVIDIA What it does
Super Resolution GeForce RTX 20, 30, 40 and 50 Series Reconstructs a higher-resolution output from lower-resolution input.
Ray Reconstruction GeForce RTX 20, 30, 40 and 50 Series Neural denoising and reconstruction for ray-traced effects.
DLAA GeForce RTX 20, 30, 40 and 50 Series Native-resolution anti-aliasing using the related reconstruction technology.
Frame Generation GeForce RTX 40 and 50 Series Creates additional frames between traditionally rendered frames.
Multi Frame Generation GeForce RTX 50 Series Creates multiple generated frames per traditionally rendered frame.
Dynamic Multi Frame Generation GeForce RTX 50 Series Adjusts the Multi Frame Generation multiplier by scene.

NVIDIA identifies RTX 50 Series cards and fifth-generation Tensor Cores for Multi Frame Generation. Check the live game menu and NVIDIA’s compatibility information before assuming a feature is available on a supported generation.

How to choose a DLSS setting

  1. Set your target. Decide the output resolution, refresh rate and frame-time or responsiveness target you actually want.
  2. Check the GPU and game. Confirm your RTX generation and whether the title supports Super Resolution, Frame Generation, Ray Reconstruction or DLAA.
  3. Measure the conventional render rate first. Test with Frame Generation disabled so you know how quickly the game is truly rendering frames.
  4. Start with the least aggressive reconstruction that meets the target. Try Quality, then Balanced or Performance only if additional headroom is necessary.
  5. Test motion, not just screenshots. Pan the camera across foliage, thin geometry, wires, reflections and particle effects. Look for ghosting, shimmer, unstable edges and loss of fine detail.
  6. Add Ray Reconstruction for ray-traced workloads. Compare the same ray-traced scene and watch both image stability and frame time.
  7. Evaluate Frame Generation separately. Check the conventional rate, displayed rate and input feel. Treat the generated rate as a smoothness aid, not as an identical replacement for native rendering throughput.
  8. Use DLAA only when native performance is adequate. It is an anti-aliasing choice, not an upscaling performance mode.

What the “up to 5X” claim means

In 2023, NVIDIA reported that combining Super Resolution, Frame Generation and Ray Reconstruction in Cyberpunk 2077 produced up to a 5X frame-rate increase versus native 4K rendering with DLSS disabled. This is a vendor-reported example tied to that game, feature combination and comparison baseline; it is not an independent benchmark or a prediction for other games and hardware. See NVIDIA’s announcement at NVIDIA DLSS 3.5: Enhancing Ray Tracing With AI.

Common mistakes and fixes

Calling generated FPS “native FPS”

Keep the conventional render rate and generated or displayed rate separate in your notes and overlays. If the base rate is low, lowering input latency and improving simulation responsiveness may require reducing graphics settings rather than adding more generated frames.

Assuming every RTX card has Frame Generation

Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction and DLAA span RTX 20 through RTX 50 in NVIDIA’s table, but Frame Generation begins with RTX 40, while Multi Frame Generation and Dynamic Multi Frame Generation are listed for RTX 50. Verify both GPU generation and game integration.

Judging DLSS from one still screenshot

Temporal reconstruction is designed for moving sequences. Use repeatable camera movement and inspect thin objects, foliage, particles and reflections while in motion.

Expecting Ray Reconstruction to help rasterized graphics

The feature targets ray-traced effects. If ray tracing is disabled, compare Super Resolution, native rendering or DLAA instead.

Assuming a preset has the same internal resolution everywhere

Quality, Balanced and Performance are game-level labels. Their render scales and behavior can differ by output resolution and implementation, so evaluate the actual title you play.

The practical verdict

DLSS can make a demanding game faster or smoother, but each component changes a different part of the rendering pipeline. Use Super Resolution when reconstructing from a lower-resolution input gives you the performance headroom you need; use Ray Reconstruction for supported ray-traced effects; use Frame Generation or Multi Frame Generation when you understand the difference between displayed smoothness and conventional rendering; and use DLAA when native-resolution anti-aliasing matters more than extra performance. The right setting is the one that meets your frame-time and responsiveness target while keeping motion artifacts acceptable on your specific GPU and game.
