DLSS 3.7 mod support on an AMD handheld does not mean official NVIDIA DLSS support has arrived. In this context, it means the community HelixSR project can run NVIDIA’s DLSS Model E neural upscaler as Direct3D 12 compute shaders on some AMD GPUs. It is an unofficial, per-game workaround for super resolution, not a universal driver feature and not a frame-generation solution.
What “DLSS 3.7 mod support” actually means
The phrase is shorthand for using HelixSR, an independent project that adapts NVIDIA’s DLSS Model E network for AMD hardware. HelixSR says it executes the network through standard Direct3D 12 compute shaders, without NVIDIA Tensor Cores, an NVIDIA graphics driver, CUDA, or ROCm. The model is still NVIDIA’s network; the project is not presenting a newly trained AMD model.
That distinction matters on handheld PCs. An AMD APU cannot load the normal NVIDIA DLSS runtime as if it were running on a GeForce GPU. HelixSR supplies a translation and execution path that can process the upscaling workload on compatible AMD graphics hardware. The project says packed FP16 arithmetic produces results close to NVIDIA DLSS, but not bit-identical to the official implementation.

A game must expose a compatible upscaler path, normally through Direct3D 12, and the installation method must match that title. A successful setup in one game does not establish compatibility in another.

What HelixSR provides—and what it does not
Super resolution only
HelixSR’s documented feature is spatial-temporal super resolution: it reconstructs a higher-resolution image from a lower-resolution input. The project does not provide its own frame-generation feature. If a game or an interoperability layer separately supplies FSR frame generation, that feature may continue to operate, but it is a separate pipeline and should not be described as DLSS frame generation.
A community implementation, not vendor support
HelixSR describes itself as unofficial and says it is not affiliated with or endorsed by NVIDIA, AMD, or OptiScaler. Installing it can involve replacing game files or injecting a loader, so the game developer’s support policy, anti-cheat behavior, and update history remain relevant.
How the compatibility chain works
Direct3D 12 is the documented target
The project documentation is centered on Direct3D 12 games. A title using another rendering API, a custom upscaler integration, or an unsupported version may not expose the hooks HelixSR needs. Even among Direct3D 12 games, shader behavior, input formats, motion-vector handling, depth data, and the game’s selected upscaler can produce different results.
The game must already offer a usable upscaler route
HelixSR is not a universal switch that adds a new graphics menu to every game. Its documented routes depend on what the game already supports. OptiScaler’s upstream README describes replacing upscalers in games that support DLSS 2 or newer, FSR 2 or newer, or XeSS, with title-specific compatibility and known issues. That interoperability layer does not make every listed game automatically compatible with HelixSR.
Anti-cheat and file conflicts are real constraints
The experimental loader route is explicitly limited in testing and is not recommended for anti-cheat games. It also cannot coexist with another mod that installs a dxgi.dll beside the game executable. A game update can overwrite replacement files, change its rendering interface, or cause an anti-cheat system to reject the modified installation.
Hardware and operating-system boundaries
AMD GPU generations
HelixSR lists AMD RDNA 1 and newer hardware as supported in principle and excludes Radeon Vega. That is a project compatibility statement, not a guarantee for every APU, driver branch, memory configuration, or handheld firmware.

What the developers actually tested
The project identifies an AMD BC-250 running Linux with the Mesa RADV driver as its development and testing configuration. It says other GPUs and Windows have not been tested by the project. Therefore, a Windows handheld with an RDNA-based APU may meet the stated architecture requirement while still falling outside the project’s tested experience.

HelixSR documents a Linux and Steam Deck installation path, making a Steam Deck a relevant example of the platform it addresses. The documentation does not establish compatibility for every Steam Deck revision, every game, or every SteamOS update. Treat the device reference as an installation target, not as a blanket compatibility certification.
Available installation routes
The project currently documents three approaches. Choose the route that matches the game’s existing upscaler rather than assuming one method works everywhere. Read the current project instructions before changing files, because these procedures and supported versions can change.
- Replace an FSR 3.1 upscaler DLL. For a game using the documented FSR 3.1 path, HelixSR can replace the relevant upscaler DLL. This is a title-specific file replacement; preserve the original file so you can restore it after a game update or if the modification fails.
- Use the bundled official OptiScaler route. Where a game has an appropriate DLSS, XeSS, or FSR 2 input, the bundled OptiScaler method can provide the interoperability layer that routes the game’s upscaler request to HelixSR. OptiScaler’s own compatibility notes should be checked for the specific title.
- Use the experimental loader route. This route lets a game’s own DLSS option invoke HelixSR. It has limited testing, is not recommended for anti-cheat games, and conflicts with another mod that places
dxgi.dllnext to the executable.
These routes are alternatives, not cumulative requirements. Installing multiple incompatible wrappers can prevent the game from starting or make troubleshooting ambiguous.
Linux and Steam Deck setup considerations
On Linux, the project documents running helixsr-setup.sh. Its setup process may use the system Python and NumPy. On read-only systems such as SteamOS and Bazzite, it may offer a portable Python option instead. Those are project instructions rather than universal Linux requirements, and the exact prompts can change.

Can an AMD handheld run DLSS?
It can run the DLSS network through HelixSR when the handheld’s GPU, operating system, game, API, and installation route all line up. This is different from native DLSS support. The handheld is executing a community shader implementation on AMD hardware, not using NVIDIA Tensor Cores or an NVIDIA driver.
The practical answer is therefore “sometimes, per game.” RDNA 1-and-newer eligibility does not override a game’s API, upscaler integration, anti-cheat policy, or a driver-specific problem. Radeon Vega is outside the project’s stated scope.
Does it work on Steam Deck?
Steam Deck is one of the Linux platforms for which HelixSR provides setup documentation. That means a Deck owner can follow the project’s Linux-oriented procedure when a particular game has a compatible Direct3D 12 path. It does not mean every Deck game will expose the required input, nor that every Deck hardware revision has been tested.

Does the mod add frame generation?
No. HelixSR itself supplies super resolution only. A game’s existing frame-generation option, or FSR frame generation supplied through OptiScaler, may still be usable if that separate feature remains compatible. Upscaling-pass latency and generated-frame behavior must be evaluated independently; enabling HelixSR does not turn on DLSS Frame Generation.
Project-reported performance figures
HelixSR’s README reports the following GPU times for the upscaling pass. They are not total game frame times, not frame-rate guarantees, and not independent benchmark results.

How to compare HelixSR with native FSR
AMD’s official FidelityFX Super Resolution technology page describes game-integrated FSR technologies and supported-hardware routes. A native FSR option is part of the game’s supported rendering path; HelixSR is an unofficial replacement or interception path. The comparison should use the same resolution, quality preset, driver, game build, and frame-time measurement.
| Comparison point | HelixSR | Native or official FSR path |
|---|---|---|
| Implementation status | Community, unofficial project using the DLSS Model E network | AMD technology integrated or exposed through supported game and software paths |
| Hardware requirement | Project lists RDNA 1 and newer; Vega excluded; testing centered on BC-250 Linux | Depends on the selected FSR technology, game, and supported AMD product |
| API and game dependency | Documented around compatible Direct3D 12 and per-game routes | Depends on the game’s official integration and selected feature |
| Frame generation | No frame generation of its own | Only where the game and chosen FSR feature provide it |
| Independent image-quality comparison | Not established in the cited primary sources | Not a like-for-like claim; results vary by game and implementation |
Do not treat a lower upscaling-pass time as proof of higher whole-game FPS, and do not treat a sharper screenshot as a controlled image-quality result. The cited primary sources do not establish that HelixSR universally beats FSR, native rendering, or another upscaler on AMD handhelds.
AMD driver support is a separate question
AMD’s Adrenalin 25.3.1 release notes state that that specific Adrenalin package does not support handheld gaming devices and direct users to OEM device-specific drivers. This statement applies to the named package. It should not be expanded into a claim that every AMD driver, every handheld, every FSR feature, or every community mod is unsupported.
For a handheld, use the device maker’s recommended graphics package unless the HelixSR documentation for your operating system says otherwise. A community upscaler cannot repair a missing or incompatible OEM driver, and changing drivers can invalidate a previously working setup.
Troubleshooting checklist
- The game will not launch: restore the original DLLs, remove conflicting wrappers, and verify game files. Check whether another mod already installed
dxgi.dll. - The DLSS or upscaler option is missing: confirm that the title actually supports the input path required by the selected HelixSR route. HelixSR does not add a menu option to every game.
- Visual artifacts or unstable motion: test the game’s native upscaler, lower the modification’s scope, and check for title-specific compatibility notes. Motion vectors and depth data differ between engines.
- Anti-cheat rejection: do not use the experimental loader route in a protected game. Follow the developer’s rules and remove the mod before launching online.
- Poor performance: measure total frame time separately from the upscaling pass. The README timings are not a promise of handheld frame rate.
- Linux setup failure: rerun the current
helixsr-setup.shinstructions, check the documented Python and NumPy options, and use the portable route when the operating system is read-only.
Bottom line
DLSS 3.7 mod support gives some AMD handheld owners a way to experiment with NVIDIA’s DLSS Model E network through HelixSR’s Direct3D 12 shader implementation. It is useful when a specific game, GPU, driver, operating system, and upscaler route are compatible. It is not official DLSS support, it does not include its own frame generation, and current evidence does not prove a universal image-quality or performance advantage over native FSR. Treat it as a reversible, per-game community mod and keep a clean fallback installation.
