Direct mobile billing lets you pay for an eligible purchase by charging it to your mobile phone account or deducting it from prepaid credit. It is also known as direct carrier billing (DCB) or direct operator billing. Whether you can use it depends on your carrier, the merchant, the product, and your market.
How direct mobile billing works
-
At a supported checkout on a website, in an app, or through another service, choose the mobile-billing option.
-
The merchant or its payment intermediary may check whether your phone account and the purchase are eligible. The exact verification steps vary.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
A text message is not required in every direct carrier billing transaction. BT describes one implementation in which a customer provides a phone number through an intermediary’s page; the intermediary encrypts it, checks eligibility, and processes the charge. BT says its bill identifies the service and merchant contact details, but these are details of BT’s service, not a universal format. BT’s product description explains that flow.
What can you buy with it?
Supported purchases vary by carrier and merchant. BT lists examples including music subscriptions, apps, charitable donations, games, TV services, ticketing, and parking. Maxis’s terms cover digital content as well as physical products. These examples do not mean every carrier supports every category; check the payment options and terms shown at the relevant checkout. BT’s service details and Maxis’s DCB terms describe their respective offerings.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
One-time purchases, subscriptions, and limits
Direct mobile billing may support either one-time charges or recurring subscriptions. The available options, spending limits, treatment of prepaid and postpaid accounts, and method for canceling a subscription depend on the provider and service. Before confirming, check whether the amount recurs, how it will appear on your bill, and which merchant or carrier channel handles cancellation and refunds.

BT’s API Developer Portal, accessed in 2026, advertises a £240 spend limit for BT’s service. That figure is specific to BT; it is not a general cap for direct mobile billing. The portal also attributes 160 million transactions a year across more than 3,000 services to its third-party payment APIs. Those are BT-specific figures, not a market-wide measure of DCB use. BT’s API Developer Portal provides the figures.

How it differs from Premium SMS
Direct carrier billing is not necessarily a text-message payment. A DCB purchase can be authorized through a website or app and charged to the phone account without a text exchange. The confirmation and verification flow depends on the particular carrier, merchant, and payment intermediary.
What to do about an unfamiliar charge
Third-party charges on phone bills have raised consumer-protection concerns. In 2014, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission discussed unauthorized charges, commonly called mobile cramming, and recommended that consumer protections apply to direct carrier billing and other methods of placing third-party charges on mobile bills. That discussion is historical; it does not establish how often unauthorized charges occur today or determine the rules in every country. The FTC’s 2014 recommendations explain the issue.

What is established about the wider market?
There is no comparable market-wide statistic in the cited material that supports a general estimate of DCB transactions or spending. The International Telecommunication Union lists a direct carrier billing technical paper as a work item in its 2025–2028 programme, with timing shown as 2026. Its summary says the study will consider economic impact, regulatory models, and country case studies; it is work under study, not an approved final standard or published findings. The ITU-T work programme entry describes its status.
