A six-year-old phone is not automatically obsolete. If its battery, security support, storage, network compatibility and apps still meet your needs, keeping it can be sensible. The decisive checks are the exact model’s update status, battery condition and the cost of fixing it—not the calendar alone.
What usually changes after six years
Phones do not lose a fixed percentage of speed simply because six birthdays have passed. The experience depends on the model, software, charging history, climate, storage use and app requirements. A handset may still handle calls, messaging, web browsing and streaming, while becoming unsuitable for newer games, camera workloads or demanding multitasking.
Battery wear is often the first obvious difference
Lithium-ion batteries lose peak power capability as they chemically age. Apple explains that a phone’s electronics must be able to draw instantaneous power from the battery; when an aged battery cannot supply it, the phone may suffer an unexpected shutdown and apply performance-management behavior to prevent another one.
Symptoms include rapid percentage drops, unexpectedly low runtime, shutdowns in cold weather or under heavy load, and a system message indicating performance management. Apple says an Apple Authorised Service Provider can replace the battery to restore full performance and capacity. Other manufacturers provide model-specific diagnostics and service options, so check the support page for the exact phone.

Storage and software can make an old phone feel slower
Near-full storage leaves less working space for the operating system and apps. Removing unused downloads, videos and apps can improve responsiveness, but it cannot add the capabilities of newer hardware. Apps also raise their minimum operating-system and processor requirements over time; an app that worked six years ago may eventually stop installing or lose features.
Heat and component aging matter, but there is no universal slowdown figure
Repeated heat exposure, a worn charging port, damaged seals, failing speakers or a degraded display can affect reliability. However, no authoritative source establishes one universal “percent slower after six years” number. Any such figure would ignore major differences between models and owners.

Security updates are the hard boundary
Find the phone’s exact model number and its manufacturer support page, then verify the latest security-patch date and the published end of support. A phone can remain fast enough for everyday tasks yet become an unacceptable risk when it no longer receives security fixes.
Google’s policy for Pixel 8 and newer is seven years of Android and security updates, according to Associated Press reporting in 2026. Samsung announced a seven-year operating-system and security-update commitment for supported devices in 2024; Samsung had previously stated four years of operating-system upgrades for selected Galaxy devices in 2022. These commitments do not automatically apply to every older model, region or carrier variant.

Keep the phone’s operating system and apps current while updates remain available. Associated Press cites experts who recommend updates for privacy, security and battery-management improvements. If the manufacturer has ended patches, treat that as a replacement trigger for banking, work, health or other sensitive use—even if the hardware still feels fine.
How to decide: keep, repair or replace
Use the exact model, not its product family, when making the decision. A six-year-old flagship may have different parts, modem bands and support dates from a similarly named budget model.

Check your phone before spending money
- Record the exact model. Open Settings and look under About phone (Android) or Settings > General > About (iPhone). Note the model identifier, storage capacity and software version.
- Verify updates. In the same software-update screen, install any available operating-system and security updates. Then read the manufacturer’s support page for the model’s end date.
- Run battery diagnostics. Use the built-in battery-health or diagnostics screen where available. Track unexpected shutdowns, severe heat and runtime over several normal days rather than relying on one percentage.
- Free storage. Remove large videos, offline media and unused apps, then restart the phone. If performance improves, storage pressure was part of the problem.
- Test essentials. Confirm calls, Wi-Fi, mobile data, Bluetooth, charging, cameras, biometrics, speakers and the apps you actually need. Check that your carrier still supports the phone’s network bands and that accessories remain available.
- Price a model-specific repair. Compare a battery or port replacement, parts and labor with a warranty-backed refurbished replacement. iFixit’s repair database can show whether manuals and parts are available; Apple documents diagnostics, genuine parts and reuse or trade-in pathways for its devices.
When a battery replacement makes sense
Repair the battery first when updates are still arriving, the phone performs your required tasks and battery wear is the main defect. Use a part intended for the exact model, confirm safety certification and check the repair difficulty before ordering a replacement battery kit. Adhesive-sealed phones may require heat, specialized tools and replacement seals; a damaged battery should not be punctured, bent or placed in household trash.
A battery fix cannot restore an unsupported operating system, add missing network bands or solve a failing display and modem. If several expensive parts need work, add every estimate before deciding.

Why six years is not a universal lifespan
A Journal of Cleaner Production study published in 2020 reported that the historical median mobile-phone lifespan changed from 4.8 to 4.6 years between 2000 and 2005. That period describes early mobile-phone ownership patterns, not a prediction for today’s smartphones. Modern update commitments, repair programs and refurbished markets make the practical life of an individual device highly model-specific.
A practical verdict
Keep a six-year-old phone when it remains patched, reliable and compatible with your essential apps and network. Repair it when one affordable, available part—most commonly the battery—solves the real problem. Replace it when security support has ended, essential apps no longer run, connectivity is inadequate, or the combined repair bill approaches the cost of a suitable refurbished phone with a warranty.
