Short answer: The best-supported reconstruction for Archaeopteryx, the best-known Jurassic bird-like theropod, is an opportunistic predator of insects and other small arthropods. Small vertebrates are possible, but no fossil preserves an identifiable Archaeopteryx meal. Its hunting was probably based on ground or low-level foraging, with short flights or leaps used to move, escape, and perhaps pursue prey briefly—not a proven raptor-style aerial attack.
That conclusion combines teeth, jaw shape, body proportions, flight biomechanics and newly recognized mouth structures. Each line of evidence narrows the possibilities, but none supplies a complete hunting scene.
Which Jurassic birds are we talking about?
“Jurassic birds” covers a small and unevenly documented part of early bird evolution. Archaeopteryx lived in the Late Jurassic, about 149–145 million years ago, in what is now Germany. It was a small theropod with feathers and bird-like flight adaptations, but its anatomy still included a toothed jaw and other dinosaurian features. Because it is represented by relatively few fossils and those fossils rarely preserve behavior, most statements about its diet are reconstructions rather than observations.
Other early avialans provide useful comparisons. Their skull mechanics, feet and, in a few cases, preserved food remains show that early birds did not share one universal diet. Evidence for one lineage cannot automatically be transferred to every Jurassic bird.

What the Archaeopteryx fossils actually show
Teeth and jaws point toward small prey
The Natural History Museum describes Archaeopteryx as a small theropod with many small, cone-shaped teeth. The Australian Museum notes that it had “the small jaws and sharp teeth characteristic of living insect-eaters.” That comparison is an anatomical analogy, not a record of a swallowed insect, but it is consistent with catching and holding small, relatively soft-bodied prey.
A narrow jaw lined with numerous small teeth is poorly suited to the deep, slicing bite of a large carcass-feeder. It is more compatible with snapping at insects, larvae and other small animals, then swallowing them whole or in pieces. Teeth alone cannot identify a particular species of prey: the same general arrangement could handle more than one type of small animal.
Size and body proportions constrain the menu
A small predator has different energetic and mechanical limits from a large theropod. The 2026 review The ecology of Archaeopteryx finds that its morphology and body proportions fit insectivory and ground foraging. The review proposes larvae as a plausible food for juveniles; larger individuals could have tackled insects with tougher chitinous exoskeletons.

Small reptiles or mammals remain possible because the Natural History Museum lists them among suggested foods, but there is no direct evidence that a particular Archaeopteryx specimen ate either. “Carnivorous” in this context means animal-eating, not necessarily hunting large vertebrate prey.
No fossil has preserved an identifiable meal
The strongest qualification is simple: “No direct evidence of Archaeopteryx diet exists,” according to the 2026 ecology review. No known specimen preserves a stomach containing an insect, lizard, mammal, fish or another bird that can be assigned securely to this animal.

That absence does not prove it never ate vertebrates. Soft tissues and small prey usually decay or disperse before fossilization, and even hard parts can be lost. It means that vertebrate prey must remain a hypothesis rather than a demonstrated fact.
What did it most likely eat?
Insects and other arthropods
Insects are the leading hypothesis because several independent clues point in the same direction: small conical teeth, compact jaws, a small body, and an ecology compatible with searching the ground or low vegetation. “Arthropods” also includes prey such as spiders and other invertebrates, although a fossil cannot normally identify which species was eaten.

As an individual grew, it could have taken larger insects or animals with more resistant chitin. This is an ecological model, not a specimen-by-specimen dietary measurement.
Small vertebrates are possible, not established
The jaws could have seized a small lizard, mammal or similar animal if one came within reach. The available sources do not establish any of those items as a confirmed Archaeopteryx meal. It is therefore inaccurate to state that the animal definitely ate lizards, mammals, fish, dinosaurs or other birds.
“Small dinosaurs” is also a misleading way to frame the question. Archaeopteryx itself was a small theropod dinosaur on the evolutionary line to birds; the relevant uncertainty concerns whether it captured other small vertebrates, not whether it was a specialized predator of large dinosaur prey.

How might a Jurassic bird have hunted?
Ground and low-level foraging are the defensible default
The most conservative reconstruction is an animal that searched the ground, leaf litter, low plants or other near-surface habitats, then snapped at prey with its toothed jaws. It may have walked, hopped or made short dashes between feeding opportunities. A low perch could have provided a launch point, but nothing in the evidence requires a high-canopy hunting lifestyle.
This behavior is different from the image of a modern falcon diving at speed. The fossils do not show a specialized aerial stoop, coordinated pack hunting, or a strike technique designed for large prey.
Flight probably helped movement and escape
A 2026 biomechanics study concludes that Archaeopteryx could reach minimum sustainable flight speed in two or three successive leaps. The result supports a ground-up take-off model: the animal could build speed through repeated jumps and then become airborne. That finding helps explain how it moved between patches of habitat or escaped a threat.
It does not demonstrate a particular hunting sequence. The ability to fly after several leaps is not evidence that Archaeopteryx routinely chased insects in mid-air, intercepted prey from a dive, or captured animals with its feet.
What the feet can and cannot tell us
Early avialan feet and their proportions can be compared with living birds, but a foot capable of gripping a branch is not automatically a raptorial weapon. For Archaeopteryx, the available evidence supports short-distance movement and prey handling more strongly than a specialized talon-first attack. A ground hunter could still use its feet to pin or manipulate a large insect; the fossils do not specify how often that happened.

What the mouth reveals about feeding mechanics
Recent cranial evidence adds detail without naming a prey species. The Field Museum reports a sensitive organ at the bill tip, oral papillae and an ossified basihyal in Archaeopteryx. The basihyal is associated with the tongue; together, these features indicate that the mouth could sense, retain and reposition food efficiently.
Jingmai O’Connor, associate curator of fossil reptiles at the Field Museum, said these features provide new criteria for distinguishing bird-like dinosaurs and show that early birds evolved multiple ways to find and swallow food. A 2025 peer-reviewed study argues that such structures improved feeding efficiency near the origin of powered flight, potentially helping animals meet flight’s higher energetic costs.
These adaptations explain how food could be processed. They do not identify whether a particular bite contained a beetle, larva or small vertebrate, and they do not prove a specialized attack maneuver.

The evidence becomes clearer when taxa are kept separate. The table distinguishes direct food remains from anatomical inference and separates Jurassic Archaeopteryx from later birds.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Archaeopteryx | No direct meal; teeth, jaws, body proportions and mouth structures | Insects and other small arthropods are the leading hypothesis; small vertebrates remain possible | Ground or low-level foraging, with short flights or multi-leap take-off | Insectivory is plausible; exact prey and hunting maneuver unproven |
| Shenqiornis | Skull mechanical advantage and pedal morphometrics | Carnivory inferred from feeding and foot mechanics | Access strategy is not specified by the cited evidence | Carnivory more confidently inferred than for Archaeopteryx |
| Yanornis | Mechanical advantage plus ingested fish | Fish eating directly supported | Access strategy is not specified by the cited evidence | High confidence for fish consumption in this lineage |
| Early Cretaceous enantiornithine | Gastric pellet containing fish bones | Whole-prey swallowing followed by regurgitation of indigestible remains | Access strategy is not specified by the cited evidence | Direct evidence for a carnivorous feeding mode, but not Jurassic Archaeopteryx evidence |
The 2021 synthesis by Miller and colleagues in Biological Reviews concludes that the ancestral non-avian avialan diet remains unclear because evidence for Archaeopteryx is scarce and contradictory. It assigns carnivory more confidently to Shenqiornis from skull mechanical advantage and pedal measurements, and to Yanornis from those mechanical data together with swallowed fish.

Why the fish-pellet fossil cannot answer the Archaeopteryx question
An Early Cretaceous enantiornithine preserves a gastric pellet with fish bones. The authors interpret it as evidence that this bird swallowed fish whole and later regurgitated indigestible bones, scales, exoskeletons and feathers. It demonstrates a carnivorous feeding mode in that lineage, but it is younger than Archaeopteryx and belongs to a different clade.
Projecting that fossil directly onto Jurassic birds would erase an important evolutionary distinction. Fish eating evolved in some early bird lineages; it cannot be assumed for every bird-like theropod living millions of years earlier.
How paleontologists infer prehistoric diets
Direct remains carry the most weight
Researchers look first for stomach contents, coprolites or regurgitated pellets. These can preserve bones, scales, shells or other recognizable remains. Even then, the material must be shown to belong to the animal rather than to sediment that entered a cavity after burial.

Teeth, jaws and muscles provide mechanical clues
Tooth shape, jaw proportions and the mechanical advantage of the skull indicate how an animal could grip, crush or process food. They narrow the range of plausible prey but rarely identify a species. A small cone-shaped tooth can be compatible with several kinds of insects and small animals.
Feet and body proportions test a hunting scenario
Pedal morphometrics, limb proportions and flight models help distinguish a ground-foraging animal from one adapted to a particular aerial or aquatic pursuit. These methods constrain movement and handling, but they do not record behavior in the way a modern field observation does.
Taphonomy prevents overconfident claims
A review of early bird fossils warns that proposed plant inclusions and gastroliths can be disputed. The Field Museum also notes that quartz-like inclusions may create interpretive problems. Shumin Liu, first author of the enantiornithine study, emphasized that the clade still lacks direct stomach traces or comparable evidence in most specimens.
Could Archaeopteryx hunt while flying?
It may have captured an occasional airborne insect during a short flight or leap, but the current evidence cannot establish that behavior. The flight study addresses the minimum sustainable speed and a multi-leap take-off, not prey capture. The mouth anatomy addresses sensing and swallowing, not an aerial strike. Consequently, “could” is reasonable; “usually hunted on the wing” is not supported.
What remains uncertain
- The exact insect, arthropod or vertebrate species in the diet is unknown.
- No direct Archaeopteryx stomach content, coprolite or pellet identifies a meal.
- The frequency of ground walking, climbing, hopping and flight cannot be measured from the fossils with precision.
- There is no cited evidence for pack hunting, a raptor-like stoop or a specialized fish strike in this Jurassic animal.
- Later fish-eating and pellet-producing birds demonstrate dietary diversity, not a hidden meal for Archaeopteryx.
The evidence therefore supports a narrow but useful conclusion: Archaeopteryx was probably an opportunistic small-prey carnivore, especially an insect hunter that searched near the ground and used limited powered flight for mobility. Its anatomy reveals a capable feeding system, while the absence of a preserved meal sets a firm boundary on what can be claimed.
