Bitcoin Lightning wallet integration is not only an API exercise. You must decide who controls signing keys, which funds remain online, how invoices expire, where channel liquidity comes from, and which fees are charged at each step. Those decisions determine whether users can pay and receive reliably, what they are told at checkout, and what happens when a node, peer, or service is unavailable.

The practical rule is to document custody and cost boundaries before writing payment code: identify who can authorize a spend, who operates channels, how a user exits, which fees are routing versus on-chain or provider charges, and how your application handles invoice expiry and liquidity failures.

Custody is an architecture decision, not a marketing label

In a self-custodial Lightning design, the user controls the keys required to authorize movement of the user’s funds. A hosted or managed component may still route payments, operate a node, or provide liquidity without owning those user keys. Conversely, a service can describe itself as non-custodial while controlling important infrastructure or a channel balance that the user cannot immediately move. Your documentation should therefore identify the exact keys, funds, channels, and exit path covered by any custody claim.

Ask who can authorize each movement of funds

  • On-chain wallet: Which key signs a channel funding transaction, a cooperative close, or a sweep after a force close?
  • Channel state: Which node holds the current commitment state and can use it to update balances?
  • Payment execution: Can an operator initiate payments, or does every user payment require a user-controlled signature or approval?
  • Recovery: Can the user restore keys and channel data independently, and is there a unilateral on-chain exit?
  • Operations: Who can change routing policy, connect peers, rotate credentials, or stop the node?

These answers are more useful than simply calling an integration custodial or non-custodial. A user may hold keys while a liquidity provider controls its own side of a channel. A service may coordinate routing while being unable to unilaterally spend the user’s channel balance. State those boundaries in plain language.

Online keys create a security-versus-availability trade-off

LND’s developer overview separates the Bitcoin blockchain, peer connections, and the payment-channel network. An LND deployment needs a Bitcoin backend for on-chain payments, channel opening and closing, and monitoring chain events. Channel updates require signing keys to be online, so a node that can accept and settle Lightning payments exposes some hot-key material by design.

LND guidance recommends keeping as little as practical in hot wallets. A common architecture keeps operating liquidity online and limits the amount that can be lost if the online environment is compromised, while placing larger reserves behind a more controlled signing workflow. That is a risk decision, not a protocol requirement: moving too much liquidity offline can make routine payments fail.

What an LSP changes

A Lightning Service Provider (LSP) can open a channel, perform an on-chain-to-Lightning or Lightning-to-on-chain swap, or supply inbound capacity. The LSP retains custody of its own side of a channel. The user’s client can still be non-custodial if the user controls the keys for the user’s side and has a defined exit path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before integrating an LSP, record whether the provider can move any user funds, whether the user can close unilaterally, which chain transaction is needed to exit, and what happens if the provider disappears. Do not infer the answer from a product label. Lightning Labs’ July 2026 description of its Wavelength closed alpha, for example, says users hold their keys and the service cannot unilaterally control funds; that is a claim about that product and release, not a general property of managed Lightning services.

Invoices have a lifecycle and a privacy surface

A Lightning invoice is a payment request containing an amount or an amount instruction, a payment hash, routing and feature information, and an expiry. Treat it as a stateful object in your application rather than as a reusable account number.

Create, display, and validate an invoice

  1. Create a pending payment record in your database before asking the node to generate the invoice. Store an internal order identifier separately from the invoice’s payment hash.
  2. Generate the invoice through the selected implementation. Core Lightning’s invoice RPC accepts an amount in millisatoshis and supports several BTC or satoshi precision forms, as well as any for an amount supplied by the payer.
  3. Set a suitable description. Core Lightning documents that the description is encoded in BOLT 11 and is visible to nodes receiving the invoice unless deschashonly is used. Never place passwords, personal data, or other secrets in a clear invoice description.
  4. Display the amount and expiration clearly to the payer. If an amount is flexible, explain the allowed behavior rather than showing a misleading fixed price.
  5. Record the expiry timestamp returned or calculated by the node. Core Lightning documents a default expiry of 604800 seconds, or one week.
  6. Watch for settlement or failure through the implementation’s event mechanism and make the order transition idempotently. A repeated webhook or reconnect must not create a second fulfillment.

Expired and settled invoices are not reusable

LND’s developer guidance treats invoices as strictly single-use. After fulfillment, the payment preimage becomes publicly known, so reusing the payment hash would not represent a fresh payment request. A payer should not attempt an expired invoice, and a payee should not accept it as valid merely because a late message arrives.

Model at least these application states: created, presented, paid, expired, canceled, and replacement_created. If an invoice expires before payment, generate a replacement with a new payment hash and make clear to the customer that the old request is no longer valid. Keep the original order reference so a late status update cannot credit the same order twice.

Inspect before paying

A payer application should decode an invoice and inspect the destination, amount, payment hash, expiry, and supported features before attempting payment. Reject an amount or destination that does not match the user’s intent. Implementation details and feature sets can vary with the node release and protocol version, so validate decoder behavior against the current BOLT 11 specification and the exact release you deploy.

There is no single Lightning fee

A useful cost model separates four categories: routing fees, Bitcoin on-chain fees, liquidity-provider charges, and a service’s own application fee. Showing one number labeled Lightning fee hides decisions that affect both margins and user experience.

Cost category When it occurs Who sets or receives it What your application should show
Routing fee When a payment is forwarded through one or more channels Forwarding nodes, according to each channel policy The estimated or actual payment fee, if your wallet exposes it
Bitcoin transaction fee When funding, opening, closing, sweeping, or otherwise touching the blockchain Bitcoin miners through the transaction fee market That an on-chain transaction is required and its fee may vary with confirmation conditions
LSP liquidity charge When an LSP opens a channel or performs a swap The selected liquidity provider Whether the charge is upfront or deducted from incoming funds; the exact amount is provider-specific
Application or managed-service fee According to the service’s terms, possibly on every Lightning transaction The application or infrastructure operator The rate, recurrence, and whether ordinary routing and on-chain fees remain additional

How routing fees are calculated and managed

A forwarding node earns a fee only when it successfully forwards an HTLC. The fee is the difference between the amount received and the amount forwarded. LND’s Builder’s Guide illustrates this with a 1,000-satoshi recipient invoice and a one-satoshi forwarding charge: the upstream payment carries 1,001 satoshis, while the recipient receives 1,000.

Each channel policy can contain a fixed base fee and a proportional fee rate. A simplified representation is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

forwarding fee = base fee + (forwarded amount × proportional rate)

The exact integer and unit handling must follow the implementation and protocol rules. A route with several hops can accumulate the policies of all forwarding channels, so there is no universal network-wide Lightning rate.

Policy is also a liquidity control

LND warns that a fee set too high can discourage traffic from using a channel, while a fee set too low can drain useful liquidity quickly. Operators can set defaults, specify a policy when opening a channel, or change it later with updatechanpolicy. Use current per-channel data rather than assuming your default reflects the whole node.

On-chain, LSP, and service fees need separate explanations

Funding and closing channels

Opening and closing a channel requires a Bitcoin transaction. The fee rate or confirmation target selected for that transaction affects how quickly it confirms and how much it costs. A cooperative close generally settles with the agreed transaction, while a non-cooperative close can require additional waiting and on-chain handling.

LND’s liquidity documentation notes that channel funds can be spent instantly and often at lower fees than on-chain funds, but an offline channel may require a non-cooperative close to retrieve value. During that process, funds can be unavailable longer than a normal Lightning payment. Your support documentation should distinguish an unavailable channel from a lost balance.

LSP pricing is provider-specific

An LSP may charge upfront to recover mining fees and capital costs, or deduct its charge from an incoming payment. The general implementation documentation does not establish a standard amount. Do not publish a supposedly universal LSP price without checking the provider’s current terms, geography, capacity limits, and custody design.

Dated example: a product service fee

Lightning Labs’ July 21, 2026 announcement for the Wavelength closed alpha stated a 1-basis-point service fee for Lightning transactions. The announcement also said normal Lightning routing fees still applied, ordinary Bitcoin network fees applied when funds touched the blockchain, and alpha pricing could change. One basis point is a dated, product-specific figure; it is not a benchmark for the Lightning Network or a promise about later releases.

Liquidity determines whether a payment can work

Channel capacity is not the same as spendable balance in the direction your payment requires. A receiving application needs inbound capacity: room on the remote side for funds to move toward the application. A sending application needs sufficient outbound balance and a route whose peers can forward the amount.

Four variables to inspect

  • Channel size: The total amount committed to the channel limits its possible balance.
  • Balance placement: A channel can have plenty of total capacity but little usable balance on the side needed for the next payment.
  • Peer connectivity: A channel to a poorly connected peer may not provide useful network-wide reachability.
  • Inbound capacity: A wallet can be online and funded yet unable to receive because no route has room to deliver funds.

When a user cannot receive, check inbound capacity and route availability before asking the user to retry the same invoice. When a user cannot send, inspect outbound balance, maximum HTLC limits, peer announcements, and recent channel failures. A payment failure is often a liquidity or route problem rather than an invalid invoice.

Choose a management model

Model Advantages Questions to answer
Direct channel management Maximum control over peers, policies, liquidity, and operational data Who monitors the node, rebalances channels, responds to force closes, and protects hot keys?
LSP-assisted liquidity Faster access to inbound capacity, swaps, or channel openings What does the LSP charge, which side of the channel does it control, and how does unilateral exit work?
Managed infrastructure Less node maintenance and simpler application integration Can the operator move funds, suspend service, change routing, or access payment metadata? What happens during an outage?

Compare these models on key control, unilateral exit, inbound-capacity sourcing, rebalancing responsibility, outage behavior, invoice support, and API access. A cheaper operational model may impose more dependence on a provider; a fully direct model may require more engineering and monitoring.

Implementation interfaces and security controls

LND interfaces

LND exposes lncli, REST, and gRPC interfaces. Its overview describes gRPC as the preferred programmatic way to interact with lnd. Use the interface that matches your deployment language and operational model, but pin behavior to the exact node release and API definitions you run.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Protect transport with TLS and treat macaroons as credentials. Scope each macaroon to the minimum RPCs required by a component; do not give a checkout worker administrative permissions. Keep credentials out of client-side code, rotate them through a controlled process, and avoid exposing administrative endpoints directly to the public internet.

Core Lightning invoice RPC

Core Lightning documents invoice creation through its invoice RPC. If the caller supplies a payment preimage, the caller is responsible for generating it with secure randomness and keeping it secret until settlement. In most applications, allow the daemon to generate the preimage from an appropriate entropy source unless there is a reviewed reason to manage it yourself.

Protocol and release discipline

The BOLTs transaction specification describes commitment-transaction fee allocation and collaborative transaction fee handling. The repository’s master branch changes over time, so treat it as a living specification and verify the exact revision or released protocol version relevant to your implementation. Do not assume that a field, error code, or feature advertised in a current document exists in every deployed node version.

A practical integration checklist

  1. Write a custody statement naming the keys, channels, and funds controlled by the user, your service, and any LSP.
  2. Define the unilateral-exit procedure, including the expected Bitcoin transaction and possible delay for an offline or force-closed channel.
  3. Choose a hot-wallet limit and document which online keys are required for channel updates.
  4. Implement invoice states, a one-week default-expiry policy where applicable, replacement invoices, and idempotent settlement handling.
  5. Decode invoices before payment and verify destination, amount, payment hash, expiry, and supported features.
  6. Keep descriptions free of secrets and personal data; use a description hash option when the implementation supports it and the use case requires reduced disclosure.
  7. Display routing, on-chain, LSP, and service fees as separate concepts when they can affect the user’s total.
  8. Monitor outbound and inbound liquidity, peer connectivity, forwarding success, policy changes, and force-close events.
  9. Secure gRPC, REST, and RPC credentials with TLS, least-privilege permissions, rotation, and audit logging.
  10. Test error handling against the exact node and release you deploy, including expired invoices, duplicate callbacks, offline peers, insufficient capacity, and non-cooperative closes.

What to verify before launch

Documentation explains intended behavior, but release-specific testing remains necessary. Confirm the exact invoice encoding and expiry defaults, amount units, error responses, event delivery semantics, macaroon permissions, fee-report fields, channel policy commands, and recovery workflow in your selected implementation. Also verify provider pricing, service availability, custody boundaries, and hardware compatibility independently; a PSBT-compatible wallet can fund an LND channel, but that fact does not establish compatibility for every hardware model or signing workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
