There is no public rule that predicts which games will get a Nintendo Switch 2 release. The decision belongs to each game’s publisher. “Coming to Switch 2” can mean a new Switch 2 game, a Switch 2 Edition or upgrade of an existing game, or simply an original Switch game that runs through backward compatibility. Those are different outcomes: check Nintendo’s compatibility listing to see whether a Switch game is playable, and the publisher’s current announcement or regional store listing to confirm a separate Switch 2 release or upgrade.
What “coming to Switch 2” can mean
A game may be available on Switch 2 in one of three ways. Only the first two involve a distinct Switch 2 release; backward compatibility lets the original Switch version run on the newer console.

|---|---|---|
| Native Switch 2 game | A distinct game release made for Switch 2. | The publisher’s announcement and current regional store listing. |
| Switch 2 Edition or upgrade pack | A separate Switch 2 Edition or an upgrade that adds one to certain Switch games. Nintendo documents examples, but availability and terms depend on the title. | Whether the upgrade exists, what it adds, which Switch version qualifies, and whether it costs extra. |
| Backward-compatible Switch game | The existing Switch version runs on Switch 2; that alone does not make it a native Switch 2 release or Edition. | Nintendo’s exact-title compatibility listing and any game-specific control or accessory requirements. |
Who decides whether a game gets a separate release?
The publisher determines whether to release a game for Switch 2, offer a Switch 2 Edition or upgrade, or leave the existing Switch version to run through backward compatibility. Nintendo’s public materials distinguish Switch 2-exclusive software from Switch 2 Edition software and give examples of upgrade packs for certain Switch games. They do not set out a universal selection formula, disclose unpublished commercial agreements, or announce plans for unannounced titles. That means no general compatibility rule, sales figure, or public percentage can reliably tell you whether a particular game will be ported.

For a named game, the strongest evidence is a current announcement or listing from its publisher. Nintendo’s compatibility lookup answers a different question: whether the original Switch version is playable on Switch 2.
#1 Best Overall
- Two Joy Con can be used independently in each hand, or together as 1 game controller when attached to the Joy Con grip
- They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy two player action in supported games
- Each Joy Con has a full set of buttons and can act as a standalone controller, and each includes an accelerometer and gyro sensor, making independent left and right motion control possible
Why backward compatibility has exceptions
Nintendo says Switch 2 does not contain Switch hardware. Instead, it converts Switch game data in real time as the data is read. Nintendo technical director Tetsuya Sasaki described that process in Ask the Developer Vol. 16, Nintendo Switch 2 – Chapter 4. The company aimed to run Switch games as far as possible, but this is not a promise that every title will work or behave exactly as it did on the original console.
Nintendo supports compatible physical and digital Switch games, while warning that some titles may be unsupported or only partly compatible. It also says later testing or updates can affect support. Check the Nintendo Switch game compatibility list for the exact title rather than assuming that a general statement about backward compatibility settles its status.
Controls and accessories can affect playability
Some Switch games depend on original Joy-Con features or on a controller physically fitting an accessory. Nintendo’s UK guidance gives several examples:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Ring Fit Adventure: Joy-Con 2 cannot attach to the Ring-Con. Nintendo says original Switch Joy-Con can attach to it; compatibility may still differ for particular modes or accessories.
- 1-2-Switch and Game Builder Garage: The listed IR-camera features require original Switch Joy-Con.
- Nintendo Switch Sports: Joy-Con 2 do not fit the Leg Strap.
- Nintendo Labo titles: Nintendo includes Labo among the examples where original Joy-Con or physical accessory requirements may matter; check the specific title’s compatibility details.
Original Switch Joy-Con can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, but they cannot attach to the Switch 2 console and need a separate way to charge. A compatibility note about a particular feature or accessory does not by itself mean that the whole game library requires original Joy-Con.

How to check a particular game
- Look up the exact title on Nintendo’s compatibility page. Note whether the original Switch game is playable, partly compatible, or unsupported, and read any title-specific notes.
- Check the publisher’s current announcement or regional store listing. Confirm whether there is a distinct Switch 2 game, a Switch 2 Edition, or only the original Switch version. Release dates and availability can differ by region.
- Read the upgrade terms, if one is offered. Check which Switch version qualifies, whether the upgrade costs extra, and what features or content it adds. Do not assume an upgrade is free or available to every owner.
- Check controls and accessories against how you plan to play. Look for requirements involving original Joy-Con, infrared-camera features, straps, or other physical accessories.
What to conclude when no Switch 2 release is announced
If a publisher has not announced a Switch 2 version, Edition, or upgrade, its plans are not publicly established. A game appearing on Nintendo’s compatibility list means the existing Switch version can be played to the extent described there; it does not confirm a separate release. Recheck the publisher’s regional listing for release news and Nintendo’s compatibility entry for changes to playability.
