There is no universal price list for original Nintendo artwork. A surviving painting, cel, production board, layout, concept drawing or advertising image is valued by combining its authenticity, documented history, connection to a specific game or campaign, artist, rarity, condition, visual impact and comparable completed sales. The first task is to identify exactly what the object is; an original advertising board is not financially equivalent to a printed poster, licensed product, reproduction or fan work.
No published source in the available market record provides a representative price range for original Nintendo game art itself. Headline prices for sealed cartridges show collector demand, but they are not direct substitutes for original-art comparables. A defensible estimate must be built from closely matched sales and the individual work’s evidence.
Start by classifying the object
Before considering a character or an asking price, record the object’s production role. Nintendo-related material can include original paintings, animation cels, concept sketches, production boards, layouts, printer’s proofs, finished advertisements, posters, retail standees and reproductions. These categories differ in scarcity, ownership history and how buyers use them.
Recommended Free Tools
| Object class | What it is | Why classification affects value |
|---|---|---|
| Original painting or key art | A one-of-a-kind painted image used to sell or represent a game | Unique media and a finished image usually make authorship, condition and campaign identification critical. |
| Concept, layout or production art | Development-stage drawing, design, board or annotated working image | Notes and production context can add importance, but an unfinished study may have a narrower audience than finished key art. |
| Cel or other production element | A physical component created for an animation or related production | It must be distinguished from a later print or reproduction and tied to a documented production. |
| Printer’s proof | A test impression made before a campaign or publication was finalized | Surviving proofs can be scarce, especially when their territory, language and intended campaign are known. |
| Finished advertisement or promotional board | Artwork prepared for an ad, event, retailer or campaign | Campaign and event history can make a board more desirable than an otherwise similar image. |
| Poster, standee or licensed merchandise | A manufactured promotional item, sometimes mounted on board | It may be rare and valuable, but it is not automatically an original painting or production artifact. |
| Reproduction or fan work | A later copy, unofficial image or work made without Nintendo production use | It should not be priced as an original simply because it depicts Mario, Zelda or another recognizable character. |
Heritage Auctions’ cataloging separates original advertising art, poster-cover original art and promotional standee art, while recording physical dimensions and mounting. Follow the same discipline: note the medium and support, outer dimensions, image area, date, territory and language, intended campaign or retail use, signatures, annotations, stamps, framing and any restoration.

The factors that create or reduce value
Authenticity and provenance
Authenticity is the foundation. Provenance is the documented chain showing where the object came from and how it reached the current owner. Strong evidence may connect it to the named artist, a Nintendo employee, a licensed publisher or advertising agency, a documented campaign, an established collection or a prior specialist auction.
Preserve receipts, correspondence, campaign proofs, publication clippings, photographs and estate records. A seller’s story without supporting documents is weaker than a modest but continuous paper trail. Compare the image with contemporary packaging, magazine advertising, event photography and other campaign material, while keeping copies of the sources with the lot.
Nintendo states that its copyrights cover game visual displays, characters, packaging, manuals, labels, artwork and publications. It advises buyers to look for official seals and the correct region or language when detecting counterfeits. That guidance is useful for establishing whether a product was licensed, but a seal alone cannot prove that a unique painting, layout or advertising board is an authentic surviving production artifact. High-value works warrant independent material examination and a qualified condition or authentication opinion.
Game, character, campaign and artist importance
Demand is usually broader for art tied to a landmark title, a character’s first appearance, a major Nintendo event or a culturally dominant series. Artist attribution can widen the market further when the artist is identified and the role is documented.

Heritage describes Neal Adams’ Mario advertising work as connected to major live events and says original Nintendo artwork from that era is “exceedingly rare, and Mario-related pieces even more so, especially from the peak NES years.” The quotation describes scarcity, not a guaranteed price. A famous character cannot compensate for uncertain authenticity, severe damage or an unknown production role.
Rarity and uniqueness
Establish whether the piece is a one-off original, one of a small campaign run, a regional variant, a surviving printer’s proof or a common production print. Ask how many examples are known, not merely how many were produced. Rarity has its strongest effect when buyers also recognize the game and the historical significance.
Territory matters. A Japanese, North American or European variant may use different language, packaging, campaign dates or retail formats. Record the intended market rather than treating all versions as interchangeable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCondition, restoration and presentation
Document fading, stains, tears, paint loss, trimming, edge wear, adhesive residue, board damage, warping and previous restoration. Photograph front, back and edges in even light. Report the original support and image dimensions separately from later backing board, mat or frame. A large framed measurement can overstate the size of the actual art.

Archival framing can protect a work, but a frame is not proof of age or authenticity. Disclose replaced glass, relined paper, inpainting, varnish, cleaning and any other intervention. Buyers generally price a well-preserved original more confidently because fewer unknown repairs need to be discounted.
Visual quality and market legibility
Finished key art, recognizable character imagery, strong composition and a clear relationship to the released game are easier for buyers to understand than an unidentified study. Production notes, printer marks and annotations can add historical interest when their origin is documented; unexplained writing can instead create uncertainty.
How to compare two Nintendo-related works
Use the same set of questions for every candidate. Keep game-market results in a separate column from original-art results so a sealed cartridge does not become a misleading anchor.
| Comparison axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Object type and originality | Is it a unique original, production element, proof, manufactured promotional item or reproduction? |
| Game and character | Which exact title, character, release and historical milestone does it represent? |
| Artist attribution | Is the artist named, documented in production records or supported by a credible expert? |
| Campaign, event and territory | Was it made for a specific advertisement, live event, retailer, language edition or region? |
| Date and production role | When was it made and where did it sit in the development or marketing process? |
| Provenance strength | Are there receipts, correspondence, publication records, photographs or auction history? |
| Condition and restoration | What damage, conservation, trimming, mounting or replacement materials are present? |
| Dimensions and presentation | What are the support and image-area measurements, and is the frame or board later? |
| Rarity | How many examples are known, and is this a regional or campaign variant? |
| Completed-sale evidence | Are the comparables the same object class, medium, title, date, size, condition and provenance quality? |
Why sealed-game records are not original-art valuations
Two published figures illustrate the distinction. Heritage Auctions recorded $120,000 in 2023 for a 1987 NES The Legend of Zelda cartridge graded 9.4 A+. Christie’s cited a $720,000 Heritage Auctions result for a Super Mario Bros. game sale from 2022, accessed in 2026. Both are sealed-game or game-market results, not prices for original paintings, layouts or advertising boards.

Use such records only as broad evidence that a title commands collector attention. Do not multiply a cartridge price by a supposed rarity factor or present it as an artwork estimate. Match the object class first, then adjust for title, territory, date, medium, size, condition, artist and provenance.
A practical authentication and valuation workflow
- Photograph everything. Take high-resolution images of the front, reverse, edges, annotations, stamps, fasteners, board, frame and any labels. Include a scale for detail shots.
- Measure the correct surfaces. Record support dimensions and image-area dimensions separately. Note paper, board, canvas, paint, ink, pencil, cel material or mixed media.
- Identify the production context. Write down the exact game, character, release window, territory, language, campaign, event, retailer and intended use. Do not rely on a generic description such as “old Mario art.”
- Assemble provenance. Gather ownership records, invoices, correspondence, publication clippings, campaign proofs, photographs and prior auction references. Preserve originals and make working scans.
- Compare campaign imagery. Look for matching published advertisements, packaging, event photographs and licensed materials from the same period. Similarity supports attribution but does not replace an independent opinion.
- Obtain a condition report. Ask a qualified conservator or specialist to describe fading, tears, paint loss, trimming, mounting, restoration and archival risks in writing.
- Search completed specialist sales. Filter for the same object class and production role. Record realized price, sale date, buyer’s premium policy where stated, dimensions, condition, provenance and territory.
- Request specialist estimates. Send the complete set of photographs and records to auction specialists in video-game memorabilia or original advertising art. Ask how their estimate reflects the comparables rather than relying on a headline number.
Where and how to sell
Specialist auction
A specialist auction offers public discovery and competitive bidding. It is appropriate when the work has strong provenance, recognizable imagery or enough rarity to attract multiple informed bidders. Ask about reserve, seller’s commission, insurance, photography, catalog description, shipping and when the result becomes public.
Private sale
A private transaction can suit a highly niche work or an owner who values confidentiality and control over timing. The trade-off is less public price discovery. Require a written condition description, clear title, payment terms, insurance responsibility and a record of the final price.
Preparing the listing
Describe the object class in the title, identify the game and campaign, state dimensions and condition, distinguish original surfaces from later mounting and summarize provenance without overstating certainty. Do not call a poster “original art” unless the evidence supports that specific claim.

Common mistakes that distort an estimate
- Using a character as the entire valuation. Mario or Zelda can draw attention, but authenticity, production role and condition determine whether attention converts into bids.
- Treating a licensed seal as proof of unique artwork. The seal establishes licensed-product context; it does not prove that a one-of-a-kind board survived from Nintendo’s production process.
- Ignoring region and language. A local advertising variant may have a different campaign history and surviving count from the better-known North American version.
- Quoting an asking price as a comparable. Use completed sales, not unsold listings or optimistic insurance figures.
- Combining unlike objects. Keep paintings, cels, proofs, posters, standees and sealed games in separate datasets.
- Hiding restoration or mounting. Undisclosed trimming, repainting, relining or adhesive damage can undermine buyer confidence after inspection.
- Overstating certainty. If artist, date or campaign remains unconfirmed, label it as such and price the uncertainty rather than presenting an assumption as fact.
A useful physical reference for identification
Nintendo’s official The Legend of Zelda: Art & Artifacts is a 424-page hardcover reference that includes rare promotional pieces, box art, instruction-booklet illustrations, character illustrations, sprite art and artist interviews. It can help an owner recognize production categories and compare published imagery, but it is a reference aid, not an appraisal or authentication certificate.
What a defensible value conclusion looks like
A credible conclusion identifies the object, explains the evidence for authenticity, states the documented game and campaign connection, describes condition and restoration, lists matched completed sales and explains adjustments for differences. It may produce a range rather than a single number, especially when provenance or artist attribution is incomplete. The range should narrow only when better records, examination or comparable sales justify greater confidence.
The Bottom Line
Original Nintendo art is valued by evidence, not by character recognition alone: classify the object, prove its production history, document condition and compare it with completed sales of the same type. Sealed-game records can show demand for a title, but they cannot substitute for original-art comparables.
