Denuvo Anti-Tamper is a publisher-integrated anti-piracy layer that makes a PC game’s executable harder to modify, crack, and run without authorization. Irdeto, Denuvo’s owner, says the system validates ownership through the distribution platform, creates a token tied to the player’s hardware, and works alongside—not instead of—the platform’s existing digital-rights management (DRM).
It is not a graphics option, performance optimizer, or anti-cheat system. Whether it affects frame rate, requires an internet connection, limits installations, or is later removed depends on the individual game’s implementation, license terms, updates, and other protection layers.

What Denuvo Anti-Tamper is
Denuvo Anti-Tamper is software that a game publisher adds during the build process to protect compiled game binaries. Irdeto describes the product as part of its broader Anti-Piracy offering: binary-level protection is applied to the game, then the protected build is distributed through a platform such as a PC game store.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe goal is to raise the technical cost of reverse-engineering and cracking. A crack typically has to bypass or remove checks that verify the copy is authorized and that it is running in an expected environment. Denuvo does not make a game impossible to pirate, and it does not replace the store’s account, purchase, or licensing system. Instead, Irdeto says it reinforces that existing platform DRM.

- Return of id Multiplayer: Dominate your opponents in DOOM's signature, fast-paced arena-style combat
- Near-Limitless Gameplay: DOOM SnapMap - A powerful, but easy-to-use game and level editor that allows for limitless gameplay experiences on every platform
The protection is integrated by the publisher. Players normally do not install Denuvo as a separate utility, and there is no Denuvo setting that can be switched off from a game’s graphics menu.
Anti-Tamper is not Anti-Cheat
Denuvo Anti-Tamper and Denuvo Anti-Cheat are separate product categories. Anti-Tamper and Anti-Piracy focus on unauthorized copying and modification of game files. Anti-cheat systems are designed to detect or prevent unfair changes during multiplayer play. A title can use one, both, or neither, so the presence of Anti-Tamper does not tell you whether a game has an anti-cheat system.
How the protection works from installation to play
The exact implementation is proprietary and can differ by game, but Irdeto’s public description gives the broad sequence:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Build integration: the publisher applies binary-level protection while preparing the game. This is an added build step, not a Windows-wide service that protects every program.
- Platform ownership check: when the game is installed or started, the protected build can validate ownership through the distribution platform’s licensing system.
- Hardware-bound authorization: Irdeto says the service issues a token associated with the authorized hardware. The token is intended to let the purchased copy run on a matching device.
- Runtime verification: protected code checks that the executable has not been altered in ways that bypass its safeguards. The checks are intended to operate away from gameplay-critical paths, according to Irdeto.
- Continued platform DRM: the game’s normal account and store checks remain in place. Denuvo supplements them rather than becoming a replacement storefront or license database.
These steps explain why a game can have both a store launcher and Denuvo-related files or checks. They also explain why moving an installed copy to a substantially different machine, replacing hardware, or restoring an old image can trigger a new authorization requirement in some titles. The specific behavior is controlled by the publisher’s implementation and license terms.
What a player may encounter
Internet access during setup or first launch
There is no single Denuvo rule that applies to every game. A product-specific End User License Agreement (EULA) can define when an online check is required. For example, the SEGA EULA distributed through Steam for app 1061730 says the software may require an internet connection during installation or first launch, may limit the number of installations, may install additional copy-protection components, and may leave certain files after the game is uninstalled. That is a concrete example of one title’s terms, not a guarantee about every Denuvo-protected release.

Can you play a Denuvo game offline?
Sometimes, but the answer must come from the game’s current EULA and the publisher’s support documentation. A title may require an online activation once and then permit offline play, may require periodic or event-based checks, or may follow the platform’s own offline mode rules. A patch can also change the behavior.
Before travelling or disconnecting, open the game’s store page and installed EULA, then check the publisher’s support page for “offline,” “activation,” or “internet connection” requirements. Complete any first launch and activation while online, test the platform’s offline mode before you need it, and keep the launcher and game on the same account. Do not assume that another game from the same publisher uses identical rules.
Installation limits and leftover components
Installation counts, hardware changes, and files left after uninstall are also title-specific. If a license mentions an installation limit, follow its reactivation or support process rather than repeatedly reinstalling. After removal, inspect the game’s own support instructions before deleting files manually; a remaining component may belong to another protection or launcher feature, and deleting the wrong file can stop the game from starting.
Does Denuvo lower FPS?
There is no reliable universal percentage for a Denuvo performance penalty. Irdeto says its protection is designed to avoid gameplay-critical paths and reports no noticeable impact during play. That is the vendor’s design claim, not an independent benchmark result.
Player reports and publisher decisions have raised performance concerns, but controlled, same-build A/B testing is scarce. A March 13, 2026 PCGamesN report noted that apparent problems can be confounded by a game’s update history, other DRM or anti-cheat components, and an integration that was not handled well. Comparing two different games—or the same game before and after several unrelated patches—cannot isolate Denuvo’s effect.

| Question | What the available evidence supports |
|---|---|
| Does every Denuvo game lose FPS? | No. A universal loss is not established. |
| Can a particular implementation affect performance? | It is possible, especially if protection interacts with other software or is integrated poorly, but the effect must be measured for that title and build. |
| Does the vendor claim a noticeable impact? | Irdeto says protection avoids gameplay-critical paths and reports no noticeable impact during play. |
| Is there a general percentage gamers can apply? | No controlled, general percentage is established by the cited evidence. |
Why reports can disagree
- Different game builds: a patch may alter shader compilation, streaming, CPU scheduling, or loading independently of protection.
- Multiple protection layers: a store launcher, platform DRM, anti-cheat, and Denuvo-related checks can all be present.
- Different hardware and settings: a CPU-limited system may reveal a small overhead that a GPU-limited system does not, while background software can create similar stutter.
- Integration choices: how frequently a title performs checks and where protected code is placed can vary by publisher and engine.
If a game stutters, crashes, or has unusually long loading after an update, treat Denuvo as one hypothesis rather than a diagnosis. Record the game version, graphics settings, hardware, and whether the issue occurs offline or online. Install the latest game and launcher patches, verify or repair the game files using the platform’s tool, temporarily close overlays and monitoring utilities, and consult the publisher’s known-issues page. A before-and-after comparison is meaningful only when the game build, drivers, settings, and background software are held constant.

Why publishers use it
The commercial rationale is concentrated around launch. Irdeto says Anti-Piracy is intended to delay cracking and unauthorized use during the period when a new release is most exposed. An undated testimonial published by Irdeto attributes this statement to Jon Carr, Technical Director at Tripwire Interactive: “We know the launch period of a game is the most important from the sales perspective, resulting in 60-70% of total sales, and piracy can seriously damage those initial earnings, so it is excellent that the game has remained uncracked for over 60 days so far!” The 60–70% figure is the speaker’s assertion about launch sales, not a general industry statistic.
For publishers, the trade-off is engineering and support complexity. Protection has to be incorporated into release builds, tested with launchers and updates, and explained when activation or installation questions arise. For players, the trade-off can include an extra authorization step or files that would not exist in an unprotected build. The practical value therefore depends on how the publisher implements and supports it, not simply on the Denuvo name.
Can Denuvo be removed?
Yes, a publisher can ship an update that removes Denuvo from a game. Removal is not automatic for every installation: players may need to download and install the relevant patch, and other game-specific protections can remain.
Hi-Fi RUSH on PC
KRAFTON’s help-center notice for the PC version of Hi-Fi RUSH said Denuvo support was scheduled to end on January 16, 2026 and instructed players to install a patch. The notice also said the game’s own anti-tampering features would remain. This illustrates why “Denuvo removed” does not necessarily mean “all protection removed.”

inZOI
KRAFTON announced Denuvo’s removal from inZOI Early Access after feedback. The company explained that the protection had unintentionally carried over from the main development build into a Creative Studio demo branch. That case shows that a publisher can change its decision in response to player feedback or correct an implementation mistake.
If a publisher announces removal, install the stated game update through the normal platform. Do not download unofficial “Denuvo removers”: they can modify executable files, break updates, and introduce malware. Check the publisher’s notice for the effective date and for any remaining launcher, DRM, or anti-cheat requirements.

How to evaluate a specific Denuvo game
If you are deciding whether a particular title will fit your PC, evaluate that title rather than relying on a blanket reputation.
- Read the current EULA: look for installation limits, first-launch activation, internet requirements, hardware changes, and post-uninstall components.
- Check offline behavior: read the publisher’s support article and test the platform’s offline mode after the first online activation.
- Identify other protection: note the store launcher, platform DRM, anti-cheat, and any separate account requirement.
- Use same-version performance evidence: prefer controlled comparisons made with the same game build, settings, drivers, and hardware. Treat anecdotal reports as leads, not a measured percentage.
- Review publisher notices: search the title’s patch notes and support announcements for protection changes or planned removal.
- Plan recovery: keep the account credentials, installation files, and support contact needed to reactivate after a hardware change or reinstall.
Comparing two Denuvo-protected games fairly
There is no clean head-to-head conclusion based solely on both games using Denuvo. Compare the following attributes for each title:
| Comparison axis | What to record |
|---|---|
| Activation | When an internet connection is required and whether installation or hardware limits are stated. |
| Offline play | Whether the publisher documents offline support after activation and how the launcher behaves. |
| Performance | Controlled results for the same version, not screenshots or tests of different builds. |
| Other protection | Platform DRM, anti-cheat, account services, and launchers that could affect behavior. |
| Removal history | Whether the publisher has announced a patch, its effective date, and which protections remain. |
Bottom line
Denuvo Anti-Tamper is a publisher-side barrier against cracking that validates an authorized copy and is intended to protect launch-period sales. It may add activation or installation conditions documented in a game’s own license, but those conditions are not identical across titles. Irdeto claims no noticeable gameplay impact, while independent controlled comparisons are too limited to justify either “Denuvo always tanks FPS” or “Denuvo can never affect performance.” Check the specific EULA, offline policy, other protection layers, and publisher updates before drawing a conclusion about one game.
