DDR5-6000 describes a memory kit’s advertised data-transfer rate: 6,000 megatransfers per second (MT/s). Its underlying memory clock is 3,000 MHz because DDR memory transfers data on both clock edges. CL30 and CL36 are CAS-latency cycle counts. At DDR5-6000, CL30 represents about 10 nanoseconds for the CAS portion of a read, while CL36 represents about 12 ns. Those figures help compare kits, but neither label guarantees that every computer will run at 6,000 MT/s or that one kit will make every workload faster.

To choose correctly, compare the complete timing set at the same transfer rate, then verify capacity, module type, processor and motherboard support, BIOS version, recommended DIMM slots, and whether the kit’s XMP 3.0 or EXPO profile can be enabled.

What “DDR5-6000” actually means

DDR5-6000 is a marketing shorthand for a data rate of 6,000 megatransfers per second (MT/s). A transfer is one movement of data; it is not the same unit as megahertz. DDR, or double-data-rate, memory transfers on both the rising and falling edge of its clock. Therefore, a DDR5-6000 kit has an underlying clock of approximately 3,000 MHz, not 6,000 MHz.

Listing the rate in MT/s avoids a common misunderstanding. The number tells you how many transfers the module is designed to make each second under its advertised profile. It does not promise that your particular processor and motherboard will select that profile, remain stable at it, or deliver a fixed application-performance increase.

Transfer rate versus clock frequency

Label on a kit What it describes DDR5-6000 example
DDR5-6000 Advertised data-transfer rate 6,000 MT/s
Memory clock Physical clock frequency before double-data-rate transfers 3,000 MHz
Clock period Time for one memory-clock cycle About 0.333 nanoseconds

The 3,000 MHz figure comes from dividing 6,000 MT/s by two. A 3,000 MHz clock has a period of roughly 1 ÷ 3,000,000,000 seconds, or 0.333 ns. That cycle duration is the key to interpreting a CL number.

What CL30 and CL36 mean

CL stands for CAS latency. It is the number of memory-clock cycles between a read command and the point at which the first requested data becomes available, under the relevant operating conditions. CL30 means 30 cycles; CL36 means 36 cycles.

Because a cycle is shorter at a higher clock, a cycle count cannot be judged in isolation. At DDR5-6000, multiply the cycle count by approximately 0.333 ns:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Timing label Calculation at DDR5-6000 Approximate CAS time
CL30 30 × 0.333 ns 10 ns
CL36 36 × 0.333 ns 12 ns

These are arithmetic estimates for the CAS component only. They are not measurements of whole-system memory latency, game-frame rate, application completion time, or a guaranteed advantage in a particular program. Intel’s guidance treats transfer rate and timings as related factors: ideally memory combines a high rate with low timings.

Is CL30 better than CL36?

If both kits run at DDR5-6000 and all other relevant settings are comparable, CL30 has fewer CAS cycles and a shorter calculated CAS time than CL36. That makes CL30 the lower-latency choice for this specific part of the access process.

It does not follow that a CL30 computer will always be perceptibly faster than a CL36 computer. Overall results also depend on the processor’s memory controller, motherboard layout and firmware, the complete timing set, capacity, number of modules, software workload, and whether both systems are stable at their advertised settings. The available official specifications do not establish one universal performance advantage for CL30 across games, creative applications, or everyday software.

How to read a full timing string

A listing may show timings such as 30-36-36-76. The conventional order is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Position Name What it represents
First CL (tCL) CAS latency in memory-clock cycles
Second tRCD Delay between activating a row and issuing a column read or write
Third tRP Time needed to close or precharge a row before another row can be activated
Fourth tRAS Minimum time a row must remain active

Manufacturers can publish additional secondary and tertiary timings, and motherboard firmware may show many more values. CL is only one timing. Comparing a CL30 kit with a CL36 kit while ignoring tRCD, tRP, tRAS, voltage, command rate, or memory-rank arrangement can produce an incomplete conclusion.

How to compare two DDR5 listings fairly

Use this order when evaluating a desktop DDR5 kit:

  1. Match the transfer rate first. Compare DDR5-6000 with DDR5-6000 before judging CL. If one kit is faster but has a higher CL, calculate the approximate CAS time for each rather than comparing the cycle counts directly.
  2. Compare the complete primary timings. Record the entire string, such as 30-36-36-76, not just the first number.
  3. Check capacity and module count. A 32 GB kit made from two 16 GB DIMMs is a different purchase from a 32 GB single-DIMM kit. Two matched modules generally make it easier to use the platform’s intended dual-channel configuration, provided they are installed in the recommended slots.
  4. Confirm the form factor. Desktop UDIMMs and laptop SO-DIMMs are physically different. A desktop DIMM cannot be substituted for a SO-DIMM simply because both are DDR5.
  5. Identify the profile. Check whether the advertised rate uses Intel XMP 3.0, AMD EXPO, or another explicitly named profile, and note the profile voltage and timings.
  6. Verify platform support. Use the exact processor model, motherboard model, BIOS version, memory support page, and qualified-vendor list (QVL), not a generic chipset assumption.
  7. Compare price only after compatibility. A cheaper kit that must run at a lower default rate, cannot fit your slots, or lacks a stable profile is not an equivalent option.

Converting CL when rates differ

For a rough CAS-only comparison, first calculate the memory-clock period from the transfer rate. Because DDR transfers twice per clock, the period in nanoseconds is approximately 2,000 ÷ the MT/s rating. Multiply that period by CL.

Advertised rate Approximate clock period CAS estimate formula
DDR5-6000 0.333 ns CL × 0.333 ns
Any other DDR5 rate 2,000 ÷ rate in MT/s CL × (2,000 ÷ rate)

This conversion helps answer whether a higher-rate kit with a higher CL has a similar or different CAS delay. It still is not a complete performance score: bandwidth, other timings, controller behavior, and workload remain relevant.

Why the advertised rate may not be automatic

DDR5 modules contain an SPD (Serial Presence Detect) configuration. The SPD can be programmed at a lower frequency than the vendor’s marketed profile to support wider compatibility. As a result, a DDR5-6000 kit may initially boot at a lower standard speed, such as DDR5-4800 or another value selected by the platform.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The higher advertised setting is commonly stored as an overclocking profile. On Intel platforms this may be Intel XMP 3.0; on compatible AMD platforms it may be AMD EXPO. TEAMGROUP’s DDR5 specifications state that XMP 3.0 or EXPO must be enabled manually for the listed profile, and that final operating frequency depends on BIOS settings plus processor and motherboard compatibility.

Compatibility checks before you buy

Processor memory specification

Look up the exact CPU’s supported DDR5 data rates and maximum memory configuration. If the processor or its integrated memory controller supports only DDR5-5600 in your configuration, a DDR5-6000 kit will not exceed 5,600 MT/s without support for a higher setting. A kit can still operate at a lower rate, but buying it does not override the processor’s limits.

Motherboard and BIOS

Confirm that the board uses DDR5 rather than DDR4; the two standards are not interchangeable. Check the board’s memory-support list, maximum capacity, supported module densities, slot population rules, and BIOS release notes. Newer BIOS versions can improve memory training and compatibility, but updating firmware has its own risk, so follow the board maker’s documented procedure.

QVL and physical installation

A QVL lists memory modules that the motherboard maker tested with particular firmware or processor generations. Absence from a QVL does not prove that a kit will fail, but a listed kit gives you stronger evidence than a generic “DDR5 compatible” claim.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the motherboard manual’s recommended slots, commonly the second and fourth slots from the CPU socket for a two-DIMM kit, but follow your specific board’s labels. Install a matched kit together rather than mixing separate packages, even when their capacity and printed timings appear identical.

How to enable DDR5-6000 safely

  1. Install the modules in the manual’s preferred slots. Power off the system, disconnect it, and seat each DIMM until both latches engage.
  2. Enter UEFI/BIOS. Press the board’s setup key during startup; the exact key and menu names vary by manufacturer.
  3. Locate the memory profile control. Look for an XMP, EXPO, memory-profile, or overclocking menu. Select the profile whose advertised rate and timings match the kit.
  4. Save and reboot. Let the board complete memory training. The first boot after changing memory settings can take longer than normal.
  5. Verify the result. In UEFI or the operating system, confirm the effective data rate, capacity, channel mode, and primary timings. Monitoring tools may display the 3,000 MHz clock rather than 6,000 MT/s; for DDR memory, doubling that clock gives the advertised transfer rate.
  6. Test stability. Run a memory-focused stability test and your normal demanding workloads. Watch for application crashes, blue screens, file corruption, or repeated training failures.

Profile activation is not a guarantee of stability. TEAMGROUP notes that overclocking profiles may not be stable on every system. If the machine fails to boot, use the board’s documented memory-reset or clear-CMOS procedure, then retry with a lower rate, looser timings, or the default SPD setting.

What to do when DDR5-6000 will not run

The system boots at a lower speed

Check that the profile was actually selected and saved. If it was, confirm that the displayed value is being interpreted correctly: a utility showing approximately 3,000 MHz may represent DDR5-6000 effective operation. If the BIOS still selects DDR5-4800 or another lower rate, review the CPU and board specifications, update BIOS if appropriate, and consult the QVL.

The system will not complete memory training

  • Power down and reseat both DIMMs.
  • Test one module at a time in the board’s recommended slot to identify a seating or module fault.
  • Clear CMOS or use the board’s memory-recovery function according to its manual.
  • Boot at SPD defaults, then try a lower profile speed before attempting DDR5-6000 again.
  • Do not increase voltage beyond the kit maker’s documented profile without understanding the thermal and warranty implications.

Crashes occur after enabling the profile

Intermittent errors usually indicate instability rather than a successful setting. Run a memory test, check CPU and motherboard temperatures, and return to defaults if errors persist. Mixing kits, filling all four DIMM slots, using an early BIOS, or combining a demanding capacity with a high rate can reduce the attainable setting even when each module is individually rated for DDR5-6000.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Capacity, channels, and form factor matter as much as CL

Latency is only one part of a buying decision. Insufficient capacity can force an operating system to page data to storage, overwhelming any small CAS advantage. For a new build, choose the capacity required by your applications first, then select a matched module configuration that the board supports.

Two-DIMM kits are typically sold as a matched pair for a dual-channel desktop configuration. Four-DIMM configurations can increase capacity, but they place a greater electrical load on the memory controller and may require a lower rate or more conservative timings. Laptop SO-DIMMs, workstation registered modules, and server memory have different electrical and physical requirements; do not treat every DDR5 label as interchangeable.

Common buying mistakes

  • Reading MT/s as MHz. DDR5-6000 means 6,000 MT/s and approximately a 3,000 MHz clock.
  • Choosing by CL alone. Compare the full timing set and the transfer rate together.
  • Assuming the box speed is automatic. The default SPD setting can be lower; XMP 3.0 or EXPO may require manual activation.
  • Ignoring the platform ceiling. A DDR5-6000 kit cannot force a CPU or motherboard that supports only DDR5-5600 to run at 6,000 MT/s.
  • Mixing unrelated kits. Similar labels do not guarantee matching memory chips, profiles, or stability.
  • Using the wrong slots. Follow the motherboard manual rather than placing two DIMMs in adjacent slots by habit.
  • Expecting a fixed gaming gain. No universal percentage applies to CL30 versus CL36; outcomes depend on the complete system and workload.

A practical decision framework

Choose CL30 at DDR5-6000 when

  • The price difference is acceptable after capacity and compatibility are equal.
  • Your processor, motherboard, and BIOS have evidence of supporting the profile.
  • You want the lower calculated CAS time and are comparing otherwise similar kits.

Choose CL36 at DDR5-6000 when

  • It provides the capacity, module configuration, or QVL support you need at a lower cost.
  • The CL30 alternative has less capacity, a less suitable form factor, or uncertain platform support.
  • Your workload is unlikely to benefit from a small CAS difference and reliability is the priority.

Consider a different rate

If a faster kit has a substantially higher CL, calculate both CAS estimates and compare the full timings. Intel’s general guidance indicates that higher frequency often matters to average users, but the best setting depends on the system. A lower-rate kit with a mature profile can be preferable to a faster profile that repeatedly fails training or requires manual recovery.

Pre-purchase checklist

  • Is the kit DDR5 and the correct desktop DIMM or laptop SO-DIMM form factor?
  • Does the capacity match your applications and the motherboard’s maximum?
  • Is it a matched two-module kit if you intend to use dual-channel operation?
  • What are the advertised rate, complete primary timings, voltage, and profile type?
  • Does the exact CPU support the target rate and capacity?
  • Does the motherboard’s QVL include the exact part number or a closely supported configuration?
  • Is the BIOS current enough for the CPU and memory generation?
  • Which slots does the manual recommend?
  • Are you prepared to enable XMP 3.0 or EXPO manually and test stability?
  • If DDR5-6000 fails, is a lower-rate fallback acceptable?

Bottom line

DDR5-6000 means 6,000 MT/s, produced by a roughly 3,000 MHz memory clock. At that rate, CL30 is about 10 ns of CAS time and CL36 about 12 ns. CL30 is the lower-latency option when the transfer rate and other conditions are equal, but CL alone is not a whole-system performance rating. Buy for the complete timing set, sufficient capacity, correct form factor, and verified CPU-and-motherboard compatibility; then enable the appropriate XMP 3.0 or EXPO profile and test it rather than assuming the advertised speed will apply automatically.
