Robotaxis can collect cabin video, limited or conditional cabin audio, trip and account information, and vehicle-operation data. The stated reasons range from safety and emergency response to cleanliness checks, lost-item recovery, support, and service improvement. The crucial limitation is retention: the US-facing notices reviewed for Tesla Robotaxi, Waymo, and Zoox do not provide a comparable rule such as “all cabin footage is deleted after 30 days.” Retention depends on the data type, trigger, account linkage, purpose, and applicable law. This comparison reflects operator notices available on October 13, 2026; settings and practices can differ by market, rider program, vehicle, and software version.
What the published notices actually distinguish
A sensor being installed does not prove that it is continuously recording or transmitting. The notices separate several stages that are often collapsed into the phrase “robotaxi surveillance”:
- Collection: a camera, microphone, location service, or vehicle system creates data.
- Processing: the vehicle may analyze a signal locally, such as detecting a siren.
- Transmission: a clip or live feed is sent to the operator, often only after a defined trigger.
- Linkage: a record may be associated with a rider account, trip, timestamp, or location, or described as anonymous.
- Retention: the operator keeps the resulting data for a period governed by a stated schedule, an account relationship, a business purpose, or legal requirements.
Those stages produce different privacy outcomes. A local siren detector is not the same as an uploaded conversation. A trip-history rule is not a deletion schedule for every cabin-video file.

Tesla Robotaxi: when cabin data is created or sent
Cabin camera purposes and indicators
Tesla’s Robotaxi Rider Privacy Notice describes several uses for the cabin camera. It may support rider assistance, occupancy detection, safety-event handling, optional analytics, and a check after the trip to determine whether the vehicle is ready for another rider—for example, whether it appears clean or whether belongings were left behind.

The notice says cabin-camera data is not sent to Tesla during an active ride unless one of the stated conditions applies: a rider initiates support, occupancy detection needs the data, a safety event occurs, or the rider has opted into cabin-camera analytics sharing. A green indicator on the vehicle screen is described as showing when the cabin camera is active. “Not sent during an active ride” is therefore a transmission statement, not a promise that the camera is absent or powered off at every other moment.
Early-access settings can change the default
In limited areas, Tesla identifies an early-access exception. Participating riders may be subject to additional default collection of exterior-camera analytics, cabin-camera analytics, and sound-detection data for product testing, research and development, feedback, and service improvement. The exception is geographically and program limited, so it should not be generalized to every Tesla Robotaxi trip.
Audio and the orange microphone indicator
Tesla describes sound detection primarily as an environmental-response feature, including detecting sirens. Siren detection is processed locally according to the notice. Audio associated with a rider account is transmitted when the rider initiates a support request or when a safety event occurs. Optional sound-detection analytics sharing is separately described as opt-in. The touchscreen displays an orange indicator when the microphone is being used.
Safety clips and other vehicle data
Tesla says safety-event camera recordings may be up to 30 seconds. The notice says those clips may be linked to the rider account and accompanied by timestamp and location metadata to support emergency response, vehicle evaluation, and roadside assistance. The 30-second figure is a stated maximum for those safety-event clips, not a general limit on all cabin video and not a retention period.

Separate vehicle-usage and operational data can support fleet learning, predictive maintenance, issue triage, and service improvement. Tesla also describes location data from the rider’s device and the vehicle during a trip, used to route the vehicle and display the trip. Infotainment usage analytics may be collected; third-party entertainment providers handle information processed through their services under their own privacy policies.
Tesla describes fleet-learning recordings from external cameras as anonymous and unlinked to the account. That description applies to the fleet-learning material identified in the notice and should not be extended automatically to cabin clips or safety-event records.
Tesla’s retention standard
Tesla says personal data is kept only as long as necessary for the purposes described in the notice or required by law. The criteria include how the data is used, the service relationship and contract, consent, and legal requirements. The reviewed notice does not state a fixed number of days for cabin-camera or cabin-audio recordings.
Waymo: interior cameras, microphones, and support access
What the interior cameras are for
Waymo says interior cameras can help make a ride go smoothly. Its listed uses include checking cleanliness, finding lost items, assisting in emergencies, checking whether riders follow in-car rules, and improving products, services, and safety. These are operational and incident-related purposes, not a statement that every interior frame is continuously reviewed by a person.

When people may see the video
Waymo says Support may review video after an issue is brought to its attention. In more urgent circumstances, Support may access live video. The trigger matters: the help guidance describes access in connection with a reported problem or urgent need, rather than promising that live cabin video is routinely watched.
“Are you listening to me during the trip?”
Waymo’s help page uses that exact question and answers it by distinguishing cabin microphones from exterior siren detection. Cabin microphones are described as on during Rider Support calls or when a rider actively chooses to enable them. Separately, Waymo vehicles use an exterior audio-detection system to detect police and emergency-vehicle sirens, with technical and procedural safeguards intended to limit collection of human-voice data.
Waymo also states: “We do not use facial recognition or other biometric identification technologies to identify individuals.” That is Waymo’s statement about its own systems; it is not an industry-wide claim about every robotaxi operator.

Categories listed in Waymo’s privacy policy
Waymo’s policy lists video recorded inside vehicles during trips and audio during active support calls among its audio, electronic, visual, and similar information. It also lists pickup and drop-off locations, route details, and device location during a trip. Account information such as name, email address, and trip history is retained while the account remains active.

The policy permits further retention for legal or listed business purposes, including investigations, service improvement, safety, fraud prevention, and dispute resolution. Its standard is not to retain personal information longer than reasonably necessary for the described purposes. The reviewed policy does not give a distinct fixed period for a cabin-video file or cabin-audio file.
Zoox: incident-focused language, but no comparable timetable
Zoox’s official privacy notice, as available in the indexed material, says personal information may be used to investigate incidents and complaints, respond to disputes, handle insurance claims, and review audio and video recordings related to emergency, safety, or Zoox Support incidents and reports.
The notice identifies a California privacy-law retention disclosure, but the available page text does not expose enough detail to establish a numeric retention term for cabin recordings. It also does not support a detailed claim about when a cabin camera or microphone activates. The accurate conclusion is narrower: Zoox describes incident-related review and a retention disclosure, while the specific duration and activation rules are not established by the material reviewed here.

There is no supported industry-wide answer such as “seven days” or “30 days.” The notices use different formulations, and none of the reviewed operators supplies a directly comparable deletion schedule for raw cabin video and audio.

Waymo’s account-active example is especially important. Saying that account-associated information such as trip history remains while an account is active does not establish that every interior video or support-call audio file remains for the account’s entire life. Likewise, Tesla’s “as long as necessary” standard identifies decision criteria, not a number of days.
What riders can control or request
Waymo account tools
Waymo says riders can view or edit trip history, change location permissions, delete an account, and request deletion or a copy of personal information associated with the account, subject to applicable rights and limits. These controls address account-linked information; the policy does not promise that every safety, legal, or incident record is immediately erased.
Tesla indicators and choices
Tesla’s described controls are visible at the vehicle level: a green screen indicator identifies cabin-camera activity and an orange indicator identifies microphone use. Tesla also describes rider opt-in for cabin-camera analytics sharing and sound-detection analytics sharing, while noting that limited early-access programs can have different defaults.

- Which camera, microphone, location, or operational system produced the data?
- Was it processed locally, transmitted because of support or safety, or uploaded because of an analytics choice?
- Is the record linked to the rider account, or is it described as anonymous and unlinked?
- Which retention rule applies to that exact data type rather than to general account or trip information?
- What deletion, access, or copy rights apply in the service’s jurisdiction?
Common mistakes when interpreting robotaxi privacy notices
- “They record everything.” The notices describe different sensors, triggers, and purposes; that blanket statement is not supported.
- “Nobody is listening.” Waymo describes cabin microphones during support calls or rider enablement, and Tesla describes account-associated audio transmission during support or safety events.
- “The footage is deleted after a set period.” No comparable numeric cabin-recording period appears in the reviewed Tesla or Waymo notices, and the available Zoox material does not establish one.
- “Trip history and cabin video have the same lifespan.” Waymo’s account-active language names account information such as trip history; it does not provide a file-by-file cabin-video schedule.
- “A 30-second clip means recordings last 30 seconds.” Tesla’s figure applies to the maximum length of identified safety-event clips, not to every cabin recording or to deletion timing.
- “One operator’s privacy promise applies to all robotaxis.” Waymo’s biometric-identification statement is operator-specific, as are Tesla’s indicator and transmission descriptions.
What this means for privacy-sensitive riders
Assume that a robotaxi trip can generate more than navigation data: depending on the operator and trigger, it may involve interior video, conditional audio, location records, support interactions, and vehicle telemetry. At the same time, do not assume that every sensor signal becomes an account-linked recording or that every recording is retained for the same period.
The most reliable way to understand a particular ride is to identify the operator’s current rider notice, check the vehicle’s camera and microphone indicators, note whether you initiate support or enable analytics, and make any available access or deletion request with the trip date and vehicle details. Because the notices and legal rights can vary by service, market, rider program, and software configuration, a policy written for one US service is not a universal rule for all robotaxis.
