Android desktop companion apps can expose messages, calls, notifications, photos, files, clipboard content, contacts and supported phone apps on a computer—but the exact access depends on the app, device, permissions and features you enable. For ongoing phone access, Microsoft Phone Link pairs with Link to Windows and offers individually configurable features. For one-off nearby file transfers, Google Quick Share is narrower. To reduce exposure, turn off features you do not use, review Android permissions, limit Quick Share visibility and secure both devices.

What information can appear on a PC?

“Sync” can mean different things: displaying phone information on a computer, letting you act on it there, or transferring a copy between devices. Microsoft’s Phone Link feature set includes several of these capabilities. It does not mean every category is necessarily enabled for every phone or PC. Availability also depends on the phone model, feature support, the permissions granted on Android and the options you enable.

Phone Link pairs with Link to Windows using the same Microsoft account. The Android permissions you grant allow content to be accessed from the PC, but granting permission for one category does not mean you must enable every Phone Link feature. Think of the list below as the possible scope of access, not a guarantee that all of it is active on your setup.

Data or capability What may be available Why it matters
Text messages Phone Link can read and let you reply to texts when the relevant access is granted. Messages may include private conversations and SMS one-time authentication codes. Microsoft warns that such codes can be visible in Phone Link when message permission is granted. Microsoft’s setup and requirements guidance
Notifications Phone Link can display and manage Android notifications after notification access is enabled. Previews can expose message fragments, account alerts or other sensitive details.
Calls and call history Phone Link supports making and receiving calls. Contact syncing may also make contacts and call history accessible on supported platforms. A computer may reveal who is calling or whom you have contacted.
Photos Phone Link supports access to phone photos, subject to device compatibility and permissions. Images can reveal personal details or location-related context.
Files and copied content Phone Link supports file transfers and cross-device copy and paste. A received file can be saved to a PC location; transfers may use mobile data if that behavior is enabled. Files or clipboard contents—including private text or passwords—can cross the device boundary. Check the destination and consider what you copy.
Contacts When contacts are synced with a Microsoft account, Microsoft says contact data may be available in other Microsoft apps and services. Address-book information may be accessible beyond the paired computer.
Supported apps and phone screen On supported devices, Phone Link may provide access to supported mobile apps or phone-screen interaction. Someone using the PC may be able to interact with some phone content, depending on device and feature support.
Quick Share files Quick Share sends selected files between nearby devices. Visibility settings control who can find the device, and the recipient generally must accept a transfer. This is a task-specific transfer rather than ongoing access, but recipient identity and visibility still matter. Google’s Quick Share guidance

These categories do not all work the same way. A notification preview or message that appears in Phone Link is access to phone content, while a file transfer or cross-device copy-and-paste can create or move a copy onto another device. For clipboard use, consider not only the text you copy but also which computer is paired and who can use it. For files, check the destination rather than assuming a transfer exists only in the companion app.

The product documentation describes the features and permissions, but it does not establish a universal collection, routing or retention rule for every data category. Do not assume all content stays only on the PC, always goes through a cloud service, is end-to-end encrypted, or is kept for a particular length of time.

Phone Link and Quick Share: choose by the task

These tools solve different problems. Phone Link is intended for continuing access to selected phone features from a PC; Quick Share is for sending selected files to a nearby device. If you only need occasional file transfers, Quick Share avoids enabling a broader set of companion features. The trade-off is that it is not a replacement for ongoing access to messages, calls or notifications.

Consideration Phone Link / Link to Windows Quick Share for Windows
Purpose Ongoing access to selected messages, calls, notifications, photos, files, clipboard functions and supported apps. Nearby transfer of selected files between Android and Windows.
Setup Uses the same Microsoft account to pair Phone Link and Link to Windows; Android permissions are needed for the features you want. Quick Share is built into Android on supported versions; Windows requires the Quick Share app. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth must be enabled on Windows. Google’s Quick Share for Windows page
Exposure scope Can be broad, depending on enabled features and granted permissions. Focused on selected transfers, with visibility settings and recipient acceptance.
Compatibility Features vary by phone manufacturer and model; check support for your device. Google says its Windows app is for non-Samsung PCs; Samsung PC users should use Samsung’s app.

When deciding, ask whether you need a persistent connection or just want to send a particular file. Also consider who can access the computer, which categories you intend to use, whether the feature is supported on your specific phone and PC, and what visibility setting applies to a Quick Share transfer. Check current app and device support rather than assuming every Android phone offers the same features.

Reduce what Phone Link can access

Turn off features you do not need

  1. On the PC, open Phone Link. Go to Settings > Features.
  2. Disable unused categories. Turn off options such as Notifications, Messages, Calls or Photos if you do not want those features on the computer. Microsoft documents feature toggles in its Phone Link requirements and setup guidance.
  3. Check contact syncing separately. If you enabled contact sync with a Microsoft account, consider whether the convenience is worth making that data available in other Microsoft apps and services.

It is reasonable to keep one useful feature and disable another. For example, you might want to see selected phone content on your own PC but not have messages or notifications displayed there. Review the feature switches individually instead of treating pairing as an all-or-nothing choice.

Review Link to Windows permissions on Android

Android’s permission controls let you review access by app or permission type. Open Android Settings and find the Link to Windows app’s permissions; the precise menu names and paths differ across Android versions and manufacturers. Revoke permissions for features you do not use. Google explains the controls in Change app permissions on your Android phone.

Permission Manager provides a permission-by-permission view, which can help if you want to see which apps have access to a particular category rather than starting from the Link to Windows app page. Removing a permission you rely on may make the corresponding feature unavailable; if you need it again, review the permission and feature settings before re-enabling access.

Where supported, use Settings > Privacy > Privacy Dashboard to review recent permission access. Google documents a seven-day view on Android 13 and a 24-hour view on Android 12. The dashboard helps identify recent access; it does not replace deciding which permissions the app should have. See Manage permissions from the privacy dashboard.

Pay special attention to messages and one-time codes

If you receive SMS-based authentication codes and do not need texts on the PC, turn off Messages in Phone Link and remove message access that is no longer needed. The concern is practical: a person able to use the paired computer may see content made available there, including codes that arrive by SMS. Lock the PC or sign out when other people could access it.

This is a reason to scrutinize message access, not a claim that Phone Link exposes every authentication code in every configuration. Microsoft’s warning applies when message permission is granted. If you do use texts on the PC, consider the privacy of the paired computer and the people who can open your account there.

Use Quick Share with limited visibility

  1. Choose a narrow visibility setting. For ordinary use, set Quick Share to Your devices or Contacts, rather than leaving it broadly discoverable.
  2. Use temporary broad visibility only when needed. If you select Everyone for 10 minutes, Google says visibility automatically returns to the previous selection when the period ends.
  3. Verify the recipient. Check the receiver name and accept only transfers you expect. Visibility controls who may find your device; they do not make an unexpected request safe.

Google’s Quick Share instructions describe receiving files and visibility settings. Keep in mind that visibility determines who can find a device, while accepting a transfer is a separate decision. If you temporarily broaden visibility to complete a transfer, check the setting afterward rather than leaving a wider audience able to discover the device.

Check transfer destinations and data use

Convenience features can create copies in places you might not expect. Phone Link lets you change the PC save location for files received from your phone. When transferring in the other direction, shared files may also be saved in a Downloads folder on the phone. Review the destination before moving sensitive material. Microsoft describes file destinations in Seamlessly transfer content between your devices.

Cross-device copy and paste may use mobile data when Wi-Fi is unavailable if mobile-data sync is allowed. If you want to avoid that behavior, disable the mobile-data option in Phone Link’s relevant settings. Microsoft’s transfer guidance also explains this setting. This is a data-use choice as well as a privacy consideration: decide whether cross-device copying should continue when Wi-Fi is not available.

Secure both ends of the connection

  • Use a screen lock on the Android phone and a separately locked account on the PC.
  • Avoid pairing with a computer that other people can freely use. The PC is an access point for the categories you have enabled.
  • When a computer is shared or unattended, lock it or sign out rather than relying only on the phone’s lock screen.
  • Revisit enabled features and permissions when your needs change, particularly after changing devices or pairing with another PC.

Because the connection makes selected phone content available through the paired computer, the security of that computer matters too. A private phone does not protect material displayed or saved on a PC that other people can open. The reviewed documentation does not provide one retention period that applies to every data type, so do not rely on an assumed expiry to protect content.

What to check if access is broader than intended

  • Notifications or texts still appear: Check both the Phone Link feature switches under Settings > Features and Link to Windows permissions in Android Settings.
  • A permission menu is hard to find: Android paths vary by manufacturer and version. Look for the app’s permissions in system settings or use Permission Manager to inspect access by category.
  • Quick Share is visible to more people than expected: Change visibility to Your devices or Contacts. If temporary Everyone visibility was enabled, confirm the ten-minute period has ended and the previous selection has returned.
  • A transferred file is missing or in the wrong place: Check Phone Link’s PC save location and the phone’s Downloads folder, depending on transfer direction.
  • Copy and paste uses mobile data: Disable mobile-data sync if you do not want cross-device copying to use cellular data when Wi-Fi is unavailable.
  • A feature is unavailable: Check the phone’s compatibility and the permissions required for that feature. Phone Link support varies by manufacturer and model; Quick Share for Windows also has a different app recommendation for Samsung PCs.

No. Quick Share is for nearby transfers of selected files rather than ongoing phone-feature access. The recipient generally must accept the transfer; verify the receiver name and visibility setting before sharing.

The Bottom Line

Phone Link can expose a broad but configurable set of phone content, so enable only the features and Android permissions you need—especially scrutinizing message access because SMS authentication codes may be visible. For occasional file sharing, Quick Share is narrower: limit visibility to your devices or contacts, verify the recipient and secure both the phone and PC.
