Short answer: AI chatbots can retain more than the words you type. Depending on the product and your settings, a provider may store prompts, generated answers, uploaded files, voice or video, screen content, feedback, safety-review records, device and usage information, location signals, and data supplied by connected services. Deleting a visible conversation usually removes it from your history immediately, but backend deletion can take days and may have legal, security, safety-review, feedback, file-storage, or already-trained-model exceptions.
This guide covers current official consumer guidance for ChatGPT, consumer Claude, and signed-in Gemini Apps, checked against provider notices available on October 13, 2026. Business, API, school, and managed-workspace accounts can follow different rules.
What information can an AI chatbot keep?
No single list applies to every conversation. The features you use, the account type, your privacy settings, and whether another service is connected determine which categories exist.
Conversation text and generated material
Providers can retain your prompts, spoken requests, chat history, and the chatbot’s responses. Gemini’s privacy notice also describes generated code, media, summaries, links, citations, and insights as possible content. A conversation can therefore contain both what you supplied and what the system produced from it.

Files, images, video, screens, and imported content
Documents, photographs, videos, screen shares, browser-page content, and imported chats may be stored when a product supports those features. Uploading a file can create a separate stored object rather than merely adding text to the conversation. ChatGPT documents separate lifecycles for Library files, custom-GPT knowledge files, and project files; deleting the chat alone does not necessarily remove them. Voice and live-media data
Gemini says Gemini Live can involve transcripts and recordings, including audio, video, and screens shared during a Live session. Some audio and video improvement uses have a separate control, so turning off a general history setting may not answer every question about live-media handling.
Feedback and safety information
A thumbs-up, thumbs-down, written comment, or other feedback can include the conversation related to it. Providers also retain information needed for abuse prevention, safety classification, policy enforcement, or human review. Anthropic says feedback-associated data may be retained for up to five years; flagged Claude inputs or outputs may be retained for up to two years, and safety-classification scores for up to seven years. Device, usage, location, and connected-service context
Gemini lists interaction logs, device, app, browser, and some location information, plus information from Connected Apps and other Google services. Certain features can provide screen or remote-browser context. A connected service may keep a copy under its own policy, so changing a chatbot setting does not automatically erase data held elsewhere. Saved instructions, memories, and other separately stored data
Some products save custom instructions, memory-like preferences, project material, or files outside an individual chat. Treat each storage area as a separate deletion task. Removing the conversation is not proof that every associated object, feedback record, or connected-app copy has gone.
Deleting a chat is different from stopping model improvement
There are three separate outcomes to distinguish:
- Removing visible history: the conversation disappears from your account or activity list.
- Backend deletion: the provider removes stored copies on its documented schedule, subject to exceptions.
- Stopping future improvement use: new material is excluded from specified training or improvement workflows, if the setting applies to your account.
Turning off a training or improvement switch does not delete conversations already in history. Conversely, deleting a chat does not necessarily remove a file stored in a Library, a feedback record, a safety copy, or information already incorporated into a model. Anthropic specifically warns that material in an active training run or in models that have already been trained is not removed by later switching off improvement or deleting the source chat. How ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini handle retention
The table compares the documented consumer behavior. Workspace administrators, regional rules, plans, and product changes can alter the result.

Step-by-step: delete ChatGPT data
1. Stop new conversations being used for model improvement
- Open ChatGPT and select your profile menu.
- Choose Settings, then Data controls.
- Turn off Improve the model for everyone.
This setting affects future conversations covered by the account or workspace policy. It does not erase existing chats.

2. Delete individual chats or all history
- In the chat list, open the conversation’s options menu.
- Select Delete and confirm. For a broader removal, use the account’s data-control option for deleting chat history if it is available in your current interface.
- Keep the confirmation or note the date. OpenAI says deletion is scheduled for completion within 30 days, with exceptions for de-identified data and security or legal retention.
3. Remove separately stored files and projects
Open the ChatGPT Library and delete files you no longer want retained. Check custom GPT knowledge files and project files separately. A deleted conversation does not automatically establish that these objects have been deleted.
4. Use Temporary Chat for future one-off sessions
Select Temporary Chat before starting a sensitive, short-lived conversation. It will not appear in history, but OpenAI says a copy may remain for up to 30 days for safety. Saving the chat changes it into a regular conversation.
Step-by-step: delete Claude data
1. Change the Model Improvement preference
- Open Claude’s account menu.
- Go to Settings or Privacy, then locate the Model Improvement control.
- Disable improvement use if you do not want future eligible chats used for that purpose.
The exact label or location can change. The control is not retroactive: it does not pull material out of an active training run or an already-trained model.

2. Delete conversations
- Open the conversation list and choose the options menu for the chat.
- Select Delete and confirm.
- Expect immediate removal from visible history, while Anthropic’s consumer policy allows up to 30 days for backend deletion.
3. Choose Incognito for eligible future chats
Start an Incognito chat when you do not want that conversation used to improve Claude. Incognito is not the same as zero retention: the provider can still process material for service operation, safety, or other stated purposes.

4. Check feedback and flagged-content implications
If you submitted feedback, the associated data can have a five-year retention period. Flagged inputs or outputs and safety-classification scores can follow their separate two-year and seven-year limits. Do not assume deleting the visible conversation cancels those safety or feedback records.

1. Turn off Keep Activity for future chats
- Open Gemini Apps and your Google Account controls.
- Open Gemini Apps Activity or the related Keep Activity setting.
- Turn Keep Activity off and confirm the change.
Future chats then stay out of Activity and are not used to train Google AI unless you send feedback. Google retains them for 72 hours for delivering responses, handling feedback, and safety purposes.
2. Delete existing activity
- Open Gemini Apps Activity.
- Choose a date range or individual entries, then select Delete.
- Review the auto-delete setting and choose 3 months, 18 months, 36 months, or indefinite retention according to your preference. The default is 18 months.
3. Account for human review
Google says chats reviewed by human reviewers, along with related language, device, location, or feedback data, are disconnected from the account and can remain for up to three years even after you delete activity. Activity deletion therefore cannot promise immediate removal from every review system.

Deleting Gemini Apps Activity does not delete information retained by other Google services. Open each connected service’s privacy controls and remove imported, synchronized, or action-related data there as well.

What temporary, incognito, and off-history modes really mean
These modes reduce exposure in history or improvement pipelines; they are not a guarantee of instantaneous, universal erasure.
- ChatGPT Temporary Chat: absent from history, but retained up to 30 days for safety.
- Claude Incognito: not used to improve Claude, even if Model Improvement is enabled; other operational and safety handling can still apply.
- Gemini Keep Activity off: absent from Activity and excluded from Google AI training unless feedback is submitted, but retained for 72 hours.
Use the mode before entering sensitive information. Switching it on after a conversation does not retroactively change the earlier chat’s status.
Why a deleted chatbot conversation may still exist somewhere
Documented deletion windows
OpenAI schedules deleted ChatGPT chats for system deletion within 30 days. Anthropic states that deleted consumer Claude conversations are removed from backend storage within 30 days. Google permits up to three years for human-reviewed Gemini chats and related data after activity deletion. These periods describe provider policy, not a promise that every copy disappears at the same moment.

De-identification and legal or security retention
OpenAI’s official wording says: “When you delete a saved chat, OpenAI schedules it for permanent deletion from its systems within 30 days, unless the chat was already de-identified and disassociated from your account or OpenAI must retain it longer for security or legal obligations.” A record can therefore stop being linked to you while still existing in a permitted form.
Training that has already happened
Deleting source data or disabling improvement controls cannot reliably reverse information already included in a completed model-training process. Anthropic explicitly identifies this limitation for active runs and trained models.
Review, safety, and feedback copies
Human reviewers, abuse-prevention systems, safety classifiers, and feedback workflows can have their own retention periods. Those records may be disconnected from your account, which makes them less visible without making the original processing irrelevant.
Account and jurisdiction checks before you delete
- Consumer versus managed account: school and work administrators may control Gemini settings; ChatGPT workspaces can impose retention policies. Claude business environments can also differ from consumer terms.
- Country and age: privacy rights, defaults, and available controls can vary by jurisdiction and account age.
- Connected services: a chatbot setting cannot erase a copy held by a calendar, storage provider, browser integration, or another connected app.
- Product changes: labels and menu paths change. Open the provider’s current privacy page before relying on a setting.
A practical deletion checklist
- Identify the exact app, account, plan, workspace, and connected services involved.
- Turn off the provider’s model-improvement control separately from deleting history.
- Delete the relevant conversations or activity entries.
- Remove Library, project, custom-GPT, memory, saved-instruction, and connected-service data separately.
- Review feedback submissions and whether a chat was flagged or human-reviewed.
- Use Temporary, Incognito, or Keep Activity off modes before future sensitive sessions.
- Save deletion confirmations and wait through the provider’s stated window before treating the visible account as cleaned up.
The safest expectation is precise rather than absolute: you can remove visible history and stop specified future uses, but provider retention windows, safety systems, connected services, legal duties, and previously trained models can prevent an immediate, universal erasure.
