Data brokers may hold a mix of identifying details, account information and advertising identifiers—but no single profile is guaranteed to contain the same information about everyone. If you are a verified California resident, the state’s Delete Request and Opt-out Platform (DROP) lets you submit one request to registered brokers. A match can lead to deletion of eligible broker-held information, but it does not erase every record about you across the internet.
What data brokers may know about you
For California’s Delete Act, a data broker is a business that knowingly collects and sells personal information about a consumer to third parties when it has no direct relationship with that consumer. The definition covers a type of business relationship, not a standard profile that every broker keeps on every person. California Privacy Protection Agency: Data Brokers
California broker disclosures include categories such as basic identifiers, login or account information, and mobile advertising identification numbers. The records a broker holds depend on its sources and business; the category list is not proof that a particular broker has every item, or that every person has the same profile. California Privacy Protection Agency: Data Brokers
- Identity and contact details: Name, email address and phone number are examples of basic identifiers brokers may disclose.
- Account information: Some disclosures include login or account information.
- Advertising identifiers: A mobile advertising ID may be among the identifiers a broker collects or uses.
- Other personal information: Categories and sensitivity vary by business. Do not assume that every broker has your precise location, finances, health information, political views or family details.
How California residents can request deletion through DROP
California’s Delete Request and Opt-out Platform (DROP) launched on January 1, 2026. It provides eligible California consumers with one request for registered data brokers, rather than requiring a separate initial submission to each one. The platform is for verified California residents and brokers registered with California; it is not a nationwide removal service. CalPrivacy: DROP

You do not have to provide every optional field, and you can update your profile later. CalPrivacy: How DROP Works
- Submit the request and check its status. Brokers process requests through DROP, and the state says status updates may take up to 90 days. CalPrivacy: How DROP Works
CalPrivacy says DROP hashes information for matching and does not store or share the raw personal information in that form. That is the agency’s description of the platform, not an independent security audit. The platform’s terms explain how submitted identifying details may be used to facilitate deletion and opt-out requests and disclosed to registered brokers. DROP Terms of Use CalPrivacy: DROP
Starting August 1, 2026, registered brokers must access DROP at least every 45 days. This is the broker access schedule; it does not mean every request is completed immediately. CalPrivacy: How DROP Works

What each DROP status means
A status describes what happened with a broker’s handling of your request; it is not a guarantee that every organization holding information about you has been contacted.

| Status | What it means | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| Deleted | The broker matched your request and deleted non-exempt information. | Review other broker statuses separately; this result applies to the matching broker record. |
| Exempted | Information may lawfully remain under an exception. | Check the explanation and consider whether a separate request to the business is appropriate. |
| Opted-out | The broker could not make an exact match and may retain the data, but under this outcome cannot sell or share it. | Consider adding identifying details to your profile and checking again. |
| Record not found | The broker found no record, or the information supplied was not enough to match one. | Add useful identifying information if appropriate, then check again. |

What DROP does not delete
DROP applies to covered, non-exempt personal information in registered broker records. It does not erase every record held by every organization. Information you gave directly to a business in a first-party relationship is outside a DROP deletion request, though you may be able to make a separate privacy request to that business. Publicly available information and information exempt under law may also remain. California guidance gives public ownership and voting records, and information governed by other privacy laws, as examples. Do not treat DROP as a way to remove credit-report, regulated health or financial records. CalPrivacy: How DROP Works CalPrivacy: DROP
California law also requires brokers to continue deleting a consumer’s information collected again after a request, subject to statutory exceptions. In its July 10, 2026 DROP explainer, CalPrivacy says: “You only need to submit your DROP request once, and data brokers must ensure your information remains deleted should the data broker collect it again in the future.” The continuing duty is subject to exceptions in the law. DROP or a direct request: which route fits?
| Route | What it covers | Effort and matching | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| California DROP | Covered records held by registered California data brokers. | One submission to the platform after California residency verification; brokers match against the details in your profile. | Does not cover first-party business records, public information or legally exempt information. A match is not guaranteed. |
| Direct request to a broker | The specific company’s records; California’s registry provides broker disclosures and consumer privacy-request information. | Contact each company separately and follow its verification and request process. | Applies to that company, not all brokers. Exceptions may apply. |
| Direct request to a first-party business | Information you provided directly to that business or information held through your relationship with it. | Submit a separate request using the business’s privacy process. | Not included in a DROP request; the business may have legal grounds to retain some information. |
California’s public Data Broker Registry lists registered businesses and provides information about requesting privacy rights. The state also advises consumers to contact a broker directly and offers a complaint route if they have trouble exercising their rights. California Privacy Protection Agency: Data Brokers
For context on the size of the California program, CalPrivacy reported on July 10, 2026, that DROP had more than 600 active brokers and more than 325,000 consumer sign-ups. Those are agency-reported California DROP figures, not a count of all U.S. brokers and not evidence that every request had been completed. CalPrivacy: DROP
