Before adopting a drilling software platform, require written, product-specific answers about six areas: the data it handles, every place that data travels and is stored, identity and technical controls, secure development and suppliers, incident recovery, and contract/exit obligations. Validate each answer against the exact modules, deployment model, integrations, users, wells and jurisdictions in scope. A generic security brochure or a certification badge is not a substitute for evidence covering your configuration.
Why drilling platforms need product-specific due diligence
A drilling platform may connect planning and engineering workflows with operational technology. Depending on the modules purchased, it can combine well and wellbore records, trajectories, logs, mudlogs, drill reports, risk registers, engineering plans, geological or subsurface information, rig telemetry, downhole measurements, equipment data, user identities and audit events. One product may handle only planning data while another receives near-real-time feeds from a rig or edge device. Treat vendor descriptions as examples, not as an inventory of what your selected system actually collects.
The consequences of a bad assumption are practical: an integration can expose a production network, an outage can interrupt time-sensitive decisions, and an export that omits timestamps or provenance can undermine engineering or legal records. Your security, operations, procurement, IT and legal teams should therefore answer the following questions together.

1. What data does the platform collect, create or infer?
Build an inventory for the purchased scope
Ask the supplier for a field-level or object-level inventory tied to the modules and workflows in your order. Request the source, format, sensitivity, owner and retention rule for each category. Confirm whether the platform merely displays a value, stores it, transforms it, or derives a new result from it.

| Data category | Examples to confirm | Questions for the supplier |
|---|---|---|
| Well and engineering records | Well or wellbore identifiers, trajectories, drilling programs, engineering plans, risk records and reports | Which fields are mandatory? Are revisions, approvals and timestamps preserved? |
| Geological and subsurface information | Logs, mudlogs, formation or subsurface interpretations and related attachments | Is the data stored as raw files, normalized values, or both? Who can download it? |
| Operational feeds | Rig telemetry, downhole measurements, equipment status and sensor streams | What is sampled, at what frequency, and what happens when the feed is delayed or unavailable? |
| People and administration | User identities, roles, contact details, support records and audit events | Which identity attributes are synchronized, and how long are access and activity records retained? |
| Derived outputs | Calculated indicators, recommendations, alerts, benchmarks or model outputs | Who owns the output, and may it be reused to train models or benchmark other customers? |
Establish ownership and permitted use
Obtain an explicit contract answer to each of these questions:
- Who owns customer-submitted data, transformed data and derived outputs?
- May the supplier use your data to train or improve models, create benchmarks, or provide services to other customers?
- Which supplier entities, subprocessors, hosting providers and support personnel can access the data, for what purpose and from which countries?
- Can you restrict secondary use, require approval for support access, and receive a record of every disclosure?
Do not infer these rights from a product page or an “industry standard” clause. Make the permitted uses, ownership definitions and exceptions unambiguous before signature.
Define export and deletion requirements
Specify usable export formats, not just a promise that data is “available.” Test whether exports include relationships between wells and objects, original timestamps, units, revision history, approvals, metadata and provenance. Identify who performs the export, how long it takes, and whether there are fees or tier limits. At termination, require a deletion process that covers primary stores, backups, caches, logs and support copies, together with written confirmation and any legally required retention exceptions.

Identify the deployment model
| Deployment | Due-diligence questions |
|---|---|
| Cloud service | What regions host primary data, backups and logs? Which cloud provider accounts and support locations can access them? |
| Customer-hosted or on-premises | Which components do you operate, patch and monitor? What support channel can reach the environment? |
| Hybrid | Which records remain on site, which leave the site, and how are queues synchronized during a link outage? |
| Edge-connected | What runs on the rig or edge device, how is it updated, and can the operation continue safely while disconnected? |
Require a current data-flow diagram showing rig systems, edge devices, cloud services, customer networks and third-party applications. Mark every inbound and outbound connection, protocol, owner, authentication method, allowed direction, and failure behavior. Include telemetry, file transfer, remote support and administrative paths; diagrams that show only the main application are incomplete.

Verify interfaces and network boundaries
One drilling data aggregation service is described as supporting WITSML, WITS0, OPC-UA, MODBUS and DataScribe. Treat that list as product-specific: confirm the exact product and version, which interfaces are enabled in your purchase, what permissions each requires, and whether traffic is encrypted and monitored. Ask how an integration is disabled quickly, how credentials are rotated, and whether access can be segmented by well, asset, business unit, contractor or supplier.
For every dependency, document the outcome of compromise or unavailability. A cloud outage, edge-device failure, corrupted queue or revoked credential should have a defined alert, fallback and owner. If the platform informs real-time drilling decisions, require an operator-approved degraded or manual procedure rather than assuming the software will fail gracefully.
3. How are identity, access and protection controls implemented?
Identity and privilege
- Is single sign-on available in the purchased tier, and which identity standards are supported?
- Is multifactor authentication enforced for normal and privileged users?
- Can roles be limited to the least privilege needed for a well, asset, function or time period?
- Are administrator accounts separate from daily accounts, reviewed periodically and protected against shared use?
- How quickly can your team disable a departing user, contractor or compromised credential?
- Can customer administrators see, approve and terminate supplier support sessions?
Ask for a sample role matrix and an explanation of how emergency access is logged and reviewed. Confirm that service accounts and integration credentials have owners, expiration or rotation rules, and no broader rights than their task requires.
Encryption and key control
Confirm encryption in transit for user, API, telemetry and support connections, and encryption at rest for databases, object storage, backups and logs. Ask which cryptographic protections apply to your deployment, who controls the keys, how keys are rotated, and whether tenants or environments can be cryptographically separated. For customer-hosted systems, clarify which controls remain your responsibility.

Audit logs and availability
Request the event types available to customers: authentication, privilege changes, data access, exports, configuration changes, integration activity, support access and security alerts. Establish the format, delivery method, time synchronization, search capability, retention period and deletion protections. CISA’s 2024 Secure by Demand Guide recommends that cloud and SaaS providers retain and make customer security logs available for at least six months at no additional charge. That is guidance, not a universal statutory retention period; negotiate the period your investigations and regulatory obligations require.
4. What secure-development and supply-chain evidence is available?
Vulnerability disclosure and patching
Ask whether the supplier maintains a public vulnerability-disclosure policy, how it receives reports, and how it communicates severity, affected versions, workarounds and fixes. Require service targets for critical vulnerabilities, customer notification when your version is affected, and a process for compensating controls when immediate patching is impossible. For customer-hosted software, identify who tests, packages and distributes updates and who validates that an update did not break rig integrations.
Software composition and provenance
Request a software bill of materials (SBOM) for the delivered product or a documented explanation of why one cannot be provided. Ask how the supplier tracks open-source and commercial components, unsupported versions, licensing obligations and newly disclosed vulnerabilities. CISA identifies an SBOM as a useful artifact for software customers; it is evidence to examine, not proof that every component is safe.

Independent assurance and dependencies
Obtain the scope, date, exceptions and remediation status for independent assessments or attestations covering the exact application, hosting environment and services you will use. A badge without scope is not meaningful. List critical subcontractors, cloud services, identity providers and data processors, then ask how the supplier assesses them, detects material changes and responds if a dependency is compromised.

NIST SP 1326 frames supplier due diligence around foreign ownership, control or influence; provenance; resilience; foundational cybersecurity practices; and supply-chain tiers. Decide which factors matter to your threat model and procurement rules, and record the rationale rather than applying a generic score.
5. What happens during an incident, outage or destructive event?
Notification and investigation
- What constitutes a suspected or confirmed incident affecting your data, access, integrations or service?
- When does the notification clock start, who is the 24-hour contact, and what updates will include affected systems, known data, containment and customer actions?
- How are evidence, logs and forensic images preserved, and how can your investigators participate?
- Will the supplier cooperate with regulators, insurers, law enforcement and your legal counsel?
Put notice timing, update cadence and cooperation duties in the contract. A promise to notify “promptly” without a measurable trigger or contact route is difficult to operate under pressure.
Continuity, backups and restoration
Request the business-continuity and disaster-recovery plans for the services in scope. Ask which data and functions are backed up, how backups are isolated from production, how often restoration is exercised, and what evidence the supplier will provide. Clarify recovery time and recovery point targets for each critical function, the restoration order, dependencies that must be available first, and remedies or escalation if targets are missed. CISA’s software-acquisition guidance specifically highlights incident communications, continuity plans, cloud restoration service-level agreements, backup-restoration exercises, logging and patch processes.
Safe operation when disconnected
For a platform connected to a rig or edge system, define what operators can still see or control during a lost link, stale data condition or suspected compromise. Confirm whether queued data is signed, replay-protected and reconciled after reconnection. Have the operator’s safety and continuity teams approve the fallback; vendor documentation alone cannot establish that a procedure is safe for your site.

6. Which responsibilities and rights must be contractual?
Write a shared-responsibility matrix
| Layer | Questions to assign |
|---|---|
| Application and cloud | Who patches, hardens, monitors and tests the service and its underlying infrastructure? |
| Identity and endpoints | Who provisions users, enforces multifactor authentication and secures administrator workstations? |
| Rig, edge and integrations | Who owns devices, network segmentation, credentials, interface updates and fail-safe operation? |
| Customer configuration and data | Who sets roles, retention, exports, backups and well-level access, and who approves changes? |
Convert the matrix into measurable commitments covering incident notice, evidence access, remediation, restoration, subcontractor changes, export assistance, retention, deletion and exit support. Require advance notice of material changes to hosting regions, subprocessors or data use, with a right to reassess risk.
Resolve jurisdiction and records questions
Determine with counsel which privacy, residency, breach-notification, records-management and operational-technology rules apply to your locations, personnel and data. The answer depends on geography, contractual roles, data categories and deployment; no universal legal conclusion follows from the software title alone.
How to compare two or more suppliers consistently
Give every candidate the same architecture, data scope and questionnaire. Score evidence rather than marketing language, and weight each axis by operational criticality, sensitivity and your obligations.

A practical procurement sequence
- Define the use case. List wells, users, modules, jurisdictions, integrations, real-time dependencies and the consequences of outage or disclosure.
- Send the product-specific questionnaire. Require the inventory, flow diagram, deployment details, control descriptions and contract positions in writing.
- Validate evidence. Review configuration screenshots or demonstrations, assessment scope, SBOM availability, sample logs, backup-restoration records and support-access procedures.
- Test a representative workflow. Include an import, an export with provenance, role changes, an integration disablement and a disconnected or delayed-feed scenario.
- Score residual risk. Record unanswered questions, compensating controls, owners and deadlines; do not award full credit for an attestation outside the purchased scope.
- Negotiate measurable terms. Add notice, restoration, evidence, remediation, subprocessor, export, deletion and exit commitments to the agreement.
- Approve the operating model. Assign owners for identity, endpoints, edge devices, integrations, configuration, monitoring and continuity exercises.
- Reassess after adoption. Review material product, hosting, subprocessor, threat or regulatory changes and repeat testing when the deployment expands.
Red flags that should pause adoption
- The supplier cannot provide a data inventory for the modules you are buying.
- Primary data, backups, logs or support access locations are described only as “global.”
- Security features such as multifactor authentication, audit logs or export are unavailable in your tier, with no compensating control.
- There is no named incident contact, restoration target, tested backup evidence or degraded-operation procedure.
- The supplier refuses to explain secondary data use, subcontractors, component provenance or deletion at termination.
- An assessment report covers a different product, date, region or hosting environment than yours.
Final decision test
Adopt the platform only when your team can trace each sensitive data element from collection through transmission, access, storage, sharing, export, retention and deletion; demonstrate who can perform each action; and operate safely when a dependency fails. CISA describes secure software acquisition as a lifecycle activity—before purchase, during contracting and after adoption. Use that lifecycle discipline, adapt the questions to your jurisdiction and operational risk, and make unresolved gaps explicit in the approval record.
