Cycling technology is showing up in more than faster bikes: GPS computers now combine navigation, training and connected safety features; pedal power meters record performance data; some e-bike systems coordinate motor assistance with electronic shifting; and professional races are adding GPS tracking for event staff. The practical question is whether a feature fits your riding, equipment and goals—not whether it sounds high-tech.
What new cycling technology is appearing?
GPS computers bring several ride tools together
A modern GPS cycling computer can do considerably more than display speed. Garmin’s September 2025 announcement describes its Edge 550 and 850 computers with navigation, training plans, in-ride fueling prompts, weather overlays and group-ride features. The devices can also work with Garmin Varia radar and camera products. Some functions depend on compatible sensors, a smartphone, the Garmin Connect app or compatible apps, so check the requirements for the specific feature you want. Garmin’s announcement describes manufacturer-listed capabilities, not independent testing.
Garmin Singapore states battery life of up to 36 hours in battery-saver mode and up to 12 hours in demanding use cases for the Edge 550 and 850. These are manufacturer figures, not independent test results; actual runtime depends on use and settings. Garmin’s product announcement is the source for these specifications.
Pedal power meters capture training data
Garmin describes its Rally 110 and 210 as pedal-based power meters that record power and cadence. The dual-sensing Rally 210 adds cycling-dynamics data. Garmin states up to 90 hours of ride time for the Rally 110/210; this is a manufacturer specification, not an independently measured result. Garmin’s announcement provides the product details.

- 【3.3'' Touchscreen】Support both touchscreen and button operation, easy to use with clear guidance. Shows up to 12 cycling data per page on a large 3.3" screen for better visibility on every ride.
- 【Dual-Band and 5 Satellite Positioning】Simultaneously receive satellite signals in the L1 and L5 frequency bands, significantly improving navigation and positioning accuracy and anti-interference capabilities. Supports all navigation satellites GPS+Beidou+GLONASS+GALILEO+QZSS, covering the world.
- 【Smart MAP Navigation】You can set cycling routes and send to BSC500 bike computer via the iGPSPORT APP. It also supports importing routes from third-party APPs such as Strava, Komoot, etc., as well as importing some routes files directly.
- 【Turn Reminder】Automatically adjust the advance warning distance based on your current riding speed. The faster you ride, the earlier the turn prompt is triggered — ensuring you never miss a turn or intersection.
- 【Yaw Planning】Once off course, the BSC500 cycle computer automatically plans a new route to right route.
A power meter is most relevant when you have a training use for power and cadence data. Consider whether you will use those measurements, whether the pedals suit your bike and setup, and whether the added cycling-dynamics information on a dual-sensing model matters to your training. The feature list alone does not establish which model is best for a particular rider.
E-bike drive units can work with electronic shifting
Shimano says its EP6 e-bike system works with CUES Di2 and DEORE XT Di2 with LINKGLIDE to enable Free Shift and Auto Shift. The manufacturer describes Auto Shift as selecting a gear using cadence, torque and speed, and Free Shift as allowing a gear change while coasting. This is system-specific compatibility, not a general feature of all e-bikes or electronic drivetrains. Shimano lists EP6 torque at 85 Nm; verify the exact model and market specification when considering a bike. See Shimano’s EP6 product information.

Professional races use event-operated GPS tracking
For the 2025 Road World Championships, the UCI described saddle-mounted GPS devices and a control centre monitoring riders’ positions and speeds. The system was intended to help event staff flag unusual situations, such as a sudden stop. This describes infrastructure deployed for a professional event; it does not mean ordinary riders receive the same monitoring or response service. The UCI’s account is at the event announcement.

- For navigation: look at map and screen usability for your routes, and confirm whether the functions you need require a phone or app.
- For structured training: decide whether you will use training plans, fueling prompts or power data, and check which compatible sensors those features require.
- For ride awareness: distinguish between a computer’s compatibility with consumer radar or camera products and GPS monitoring run by race organizers. They are different services.
- For e-bike shifting: verify compatibility among the drive unit, bicycle, drivetrain and electronic components before choosing a system.
- For longer rides: treat quoted battery life as a manufacturer estimate tied to a stated mode or use case, not a guarantee of runtime in every setup.
The available product descriptions establish capabilities and compatibility details, but do not provide independent comparative testing or a ranking. They also do not establish market-wide adoption rates; product announcements should not be taken as evidence that most riders are using these technologies.

For racers, equipment features must be considered alongside the regulations for the relevant discipline and event. In a notice dated 20 June 2025, the UCI described rule changes with different effective dates by discipline, including a maximum road rim height of 65 mm from 1 January 2026. This is a competition rule, not a performance benchmark. Check the current UCI regulations for the event and equipment in question rather than assuming one rule applies across every cycling discipline. The UCI notice is available at the equipment-rules announcement.
