Ctrl+T turns a selected range into an Excel table: a named data object with table-specific controls and formula behavior. It does more than apply a style, but it does not automatically rewrite every existing formula into structured references or fix the data in your worksheet.
Excel table vs. range: what changes?
A regular range is a group of worksheet cells. It can be formatted, sorted, filtered, and used in formulas, but it does not have the named table structure Excel creates when you convert it. A table treats its headers as column names and adds behavior designed for lists of records.

For example, a formula can refer to DeptSales[Sales Amount] by table and column name rather than a fixed range such as C2:C7. The named reference is easier to interpret and adjusts with the table data. Microsoft lists structured references as supported in Microsoft 365, Excel 2024, 2021, 2019, 2016, and Excel Mobile; exact controls can vary by platform and release. When you create a table, Excel opens a dialog that lets you confirm the selected range and choose whether it has headers. If the first row contains column names, select My table has headers. Excel then treats those cells as the table’s column headers; if the range has no headers, Excel supplies header names.

- Filtering appears on the header row. The drop-down controls let you filter or sort the table by column.
- A table name becomes available. You can use the table and column names in structured references.
- Formula entry can fill a column. A formula entered in a table column can propagate as a calculated column.
- You can add a total row. The optional row provides aggregate choices for columns. Microsoft says its default choices use
SUBTOTAL, which by default ignores rows filtered out of the table. See Microsoft’s overview of Excel tables and its instructions for totaling table data.
These are structural and usability changes, not a promise that Excel will clean inconsistent data, repair formulas, or transform every formula already in the range.
Do formulas change when you press Ctrl+T?
Not all of them. Converting a range to a table does not automatically rewrite existing A1-style references into structured references. A formula that already refers to C2:C7 does not become a formula using DeptSales[Sales Amount] just because the cells are now a table.

After conversion, you can use structured references in formulas you create or edit. When you enter a formula in a table column, Excel can also treat it as a calculated column and fill it down. Those features are table capabilities; they are distinct from automatically changing old formulas. Microsoft explains both the reference behavior and this conversion distinction in its structured-reference documentation.
When should you use a table instead of a range?
Use a table for a continuing list
A table is useful for a list of records that will be filtered, extended, or referenced in formulas over time. Named columns, default header filters, calculated columns, and references that follow changes to table data can make routine maintenance more manageable.

Keep a regular range for a one-off block or spill area
A plain range can be a better fit for a fixed block where table behavior is unnecessary, or for a worksheet area where a dynamic-array formula needs to spill. Excel does not support spilled formulas inside tables. Put the spill formula outside the table, with enough clear worksheet cells for its results, and reference table data as needed. You can remove the table structure without deleting the cell data. The command is Convert to Range; its location varies between Excel for Windows, Mac, and the web.

- Click a cell inside the table.
- Open the Table Design tab and choose Convert to Range. Confirm the prompt if Excel displays one.
After conversion, table-specific features are removed: the Table Design tab disappears, filter arrows go away, and structured references in formulas become ordinary cell references. Some table-style formatting may remain. Rows or columns added later no longer automatically expand the former table or inherit its table behavior.
