The Canadian Standards Association (CSA), commonly called CSA Group, is a not-for-profit organization that develops standards and provides testing, inspection and certification services. It is not itself a government regulator. When you see a CSA mark on a product, it indicates certification within a particular scope—not a blanket government approval of every product or use.
What does CSA stand for?
CSA stands for Canadian Standards Association, the organization’s former full name. It is now commonly referred to as CSA Group. The Government of Canada describes it as a not-for-profit, membership-based standards-writing and testing association serving business, industry, government and consumers in Canada and the global marketplace (Government of Canada glossary).
CSA Group describes its work as focused on safety, social good and sustainability, and says it develops standards and performs product testing, inspection and certification (CSA Group annual report 2025–26).
What does CSA Group do?
Its work includes two related but different functions: developing standards, and evaluating products or services against applicable requirements. A standard sets out criteria or practices; testing and certification assess whether a particular product meets requirements within a defined scope. CSA Group’s store offers codes and standards, learning and development, personnel certification, amendments, collections and supporting materials. Its store page lists more than 160 courses, handbooks and other learning solutions; that is the figure stated on the page accessed in 2026, and catalogue offerings may change (CSA Group store).
What does a CSA mark on a product mean?
The CSA certification mark is a product certification mark. CSA Group’s historical account says it introduced the mark in 1946 to identify products it had tested and certified as meeting the relevant standard (CSA Group centennial history).

The mark alone does not mean that CSA Group is a regulator, that a government has approved every aspect of the product, or that the product is suitable for every application. For a product-specific decision, check the exact mark, the standard or requirements involved, and the certification’s scope. Requirements can depend on the product and jurisdiction.
How CSA fits into Canada’s standards system
CSA Group is one organization in a wider standards system. Natural Resources Canada identifies CSA among four standards-development organizations in Canada accredited by the Standards Council of Canada (SCC) (Natural Resources Canada: standards-development organizations). SCC accreditation is a distinct institutional relationship; it does not turn every CSA standard into a law or regulation. Whether a standard is legally required depends on the relevant legislation, regulation and jurisdiction.

When did the organization begin?
CSA Group traces its origins to 1919. The Canadian Engineering Standards Association became the Canadian Standards Association in 1944, and the CSA certification mark followed in 1946, according to the organization’s centennial timeline (CSA Group centennial history).
CSA Group’s centennial book says the first Canadian Electrical Code was published in 1927. The book described it as the organization’s most widely used standard at that time; that historical characterization should not be read as a current ranking (CSA Group centennial book).

A CSA Group certification guide reports that the organization had facilitated more than 3,000 standards. That is a figure from the guide indexed around 2023, not an independently audited current count (CSA Group certification guide).

If you need a code or standard for a project, identify the requirement that applies to your work and location before choosing a publication or course. For electrical work, the Canadian Electrical Code is a major CSA publication, but the edition you need depends on the requirements in your jurisdiction. Confirm the required edition with the relevant authority or project specifications. CSA Group’s store lists its available codes, standards and related learning resources (CSA Group store).
