First, verify the notice through the project’s official incident page or release channel, then follow instructions for your exact network and role. Pause only the transactions or services the notice identifies. A security upgrade may require a node update, temporarily disable one feature, suspend a bridge, or even replace recent chain history; it does not automatically mean every holder should move funds or change a wallet.
What should you check first?
- Verify the announcement. Navigate to a known project website, status page, or previously verified release channel. Do not trust an unsolicited message, search advertisement, or support link. Zano’s 2026 recovery notice, for example, directed operators to official wallet and release sources and advised checksum verification (Zano incident notice).
- Identify the exact network and feature. A ticker alone may not identify the affected chain or bridge route. Check which asset, chain, wallet, bridge, transaction type, or service the notice names.
- Match instructions to your role. Find out whether the action applies to holders, node operators, validators, miners, pools, exchanges, bridges, or wallet services. A node upgrade is not necessarily a request for holders to migrate funds.
- Note the condition and timing. Record any required software version, block height, deadline, pause, restoration condition, or instruction that no holder action is currently needed.
- Keep records. Save transaction IDs, timestamps, receipts, and exchange or trade records, especially if the notice mentions a rollback or recovery.
What should you do based on how you use crypto?
If you hold assets in a self-custody wallet
- Check whether the project asks holders to update a wallet, asks only operators to upgrade, pauses a particular transaction type, or says no immediate holder action is needed. Do not assume an emergency upgrade requires a seed phrase migration.
- If the affected chain, bridge, or transaction type is paused, wait for the project’s official restoration notice before using it. Do not substitute a different bridge or network unless the project explicitly says that route is safe.
- If no immediate action is prescribed, avoid speculative transfers and monitor the official status channel.
If you use an exchange or custodian
- Check the exchange’s own notice and deposit/withdrawal status for the exact asset and network. Exchange custody is separate from your wallet app’s status. Zilliqa’s incident guidance directs users with exchange-held ZIL to contact their exchange (Zilliqa incident page).
- Check deposits, withdrawals, and trading separately. In its BNB Smart Chain upgrade announcement, Binance said deposits and withdrawals would be paused around the scheduled upgrade while trading continued, then transfers would resume when the network was stable. The notice scheduled the upgrade for 2026-08-25 02:30 UTC; that date is historical, not a current instruction (Binance upgrade announcement).
- If a deposit does not appear, preserve its transaction ID and contact the exchange through its official support route. A missing credit by itself does not establish that funds are lost.
If you operate a node, validator, miner, pool, bridge, or wallet service
- Read the exact release notes and activation conditions. Install software only from official project channels, and verify checksums or signatures when provided.
- Confirm the required version and deadline or activation height. Firo’s 2026 hard-fork notice told wallet users and operators to upgrade before block 1,371,000; nodes that did not upgrade would be incompatible after activation. Its notice also said existing Spark coins, balances, addresses, and keys remained valid (Firo release information).
- Check dependent services independently. An upgraded chain does not establish that an exchange, bridge, hosted node, or wallet backend has upgraded. Zano’s notice says third-party services update independently and advises users to confirm they are on the recovered chain (Zano incident notice).
Should you move coins before a hard fork?
Not unless the project’s verified instructions specifically call for it. A hard fork does not by itself mean holders must transfer assets, change addresses, or reveal or replace keys. Follow the notice for your asset and role, and avoid creating an extra transaction while the affected feature or network is under investigation.
Project instructions can differ. Firo’s 2026 notice said its existing Spark coins, balances, addresses, and keys remained valid, while nodes that did not upgrade would become incompatible after the fork. That is a project-specific example, not a rule for other chains (Firo release information).

Is it safe to send crypto during an emergency upgrade?
Use only transaction types the official notice says remain available. Some incidents pause a specific feature while other activity continues; others pause bridge transfers or change the chain’s recent history. When the affected route is paused, wait for an official restoration notice rather than trying a different bridge or network.

For example, Elastos said its mainchain was operating while ESC block production and bridge-mediated transfers were paused, and told users not to initiate transfers between ELA and ESC until a restoration notice. Zcash temporarily disabled Orchard actions while Sapling and transparent transactions continued operating, according to the Zcash Foundation and Community Forum updates (Elastos security notice; Zcash Foundation update; Zcash Community Forum report).
What if an exchange has paused deposits or withdrawals?
A pause on deposits or withdrawals does not necessarily mean trading is paused, and a chain’s status does not guarantee an exchange has completed its own upgrade. Follow the exchange’s notice for the exact network and service; do not treat another exchange’s policy as a general rule. Binance’s BNB Smart Chain announcement, for instance, said trading would not be affected while deposits and withdrawals were paused around that upgrade (Binance upgrade announcement).

Keep the transaction ID and timestamp for any pending deposit or withdrawal. Use the exchange’s official status and support channels to ask about its handling; do not share a seed phrase or private key to get help.

What if a rollback or chain recovery is announced?
A rollback can mean a transaction shown as confirmed before recovery is absent from the recovered chain. Do not resend it just because an old-chain explorer or wallet shows confirmation: first check its status on the recovered chain, then follow the project’s or custodian’s official reconciliation process.

Zano’s 2026 recovery restarted at block height 3,833,000, immediately before Hard Fork 6, and affected approximately one month of chain history. The project said transactions confirmed during the affected period were not part of the recovered chain and instructed users to check final status before resending (Zano incident notice).
- Retain transaction IDs, receipts, exchange records, and timestamps.
- Check the transaction on the recovered chain, not only an old-chain explorer.
- Ask the project or custodian for its official reconciliation or claims process.

How can you avoid recovery scams?
Use only official project and custodian support routes. Never disclose a seed phrase or private key, and do not pay an unsolicited person who claims to recover funds. Elastos stated in its incident notice that it would never request a seed phrase, private key, or payment in response to the incident (Elastos security notice).
