Crypto tax software organizes cryptocurrency activity, calculates tax-related amounts from the records and settings supplied, and produces reports or forms for tax filing. It can help prepare the information a return needs, but its results depend on complete transaction history, accurate classifications, and support for the relevant tax jurisdiction.
What crypto tax software does
A typical tool brings together activity from supported exchanges and wallets, then processes it into tax-related records. Depending on the provider, it may:
- Import transactions from connected accounts or accept manually entered records.
- Organize and classify purchases, disposals, transfers, and supported income-related activity.
- Calculate figures such as gains, losses, or income using the transaction data and settings.
- Create tax reports, forms, or export files for filing or review by a tax professional.
- Pass relevant information to separate tax-preparation software when a supported export or integration is available.
For example, CoinTracker describes generating forms and reports from user-provided data. TurboTax describes importing digital-asset activity, including NFTs, and calculating capital gains and losses. These are providers’ descriptions of their own capabilities, not an independent test or a guarantee that every account or transaction type is supported.
Does it file your tax return?
Not necessarily. Some tools focus on calculating and reporting crypto activity; filing the full return may require separate tax-preparation software or a tax professional. CoinTracker’s filing instructions describe using reports with tax-preparation software and name integrations, but availability can depend on the report, tax year, plan, and software edition. Check current support documentation before relying on a particular connection.

Also confirm which forms and export options are offered for your country. CoinTracker says country-specific forms are available in select regions and that CSV reports can support customers elsewhere; that description does not establish identical coverage for every jurisdiction or tax year.
Why records and tax rules matter
In the United States, the IRS treats virtual currency as property for federal income tax purposes, so existing tax principles for property transactions apply. The IRS also defines a digital asset as a digital representation of value recorded on a cryptographically secured distributed ledger or similar technology. Those statements describe U.S. federal tax treatment, not rules for every country. See the IRS virtual currency FAQs and its digital assets guidance.

A software report can only reflect the records and assumptions used to create it. Missing exchange history, wallet activity, or cost-basis information—and misclassified transactions—can change the result. Review imported data and unresolved items, keep underlying records, and seek qualified tax advice for complex or uncertain situations. The IRS discusses records for identifying specific units of virtual currency in its FAQs; software output does not replace that recordkeeping responsibility.

What to check before choosing a tool
- Data sources: Confirm that it supports the exchanges and wallets you used, and that you can add records it cannot import.
- Transaction coverage: Check whether it handles the kinds of activity in your history, rather than assuming every crypto transaction is supported.
- Jurisdiction and tax year: Verify the country-specific forms or reports available for the filing year you need.
- Review and correction: Find out how the tool identifies missing, duplicate, or ambiguous records and lets you correct classifications.
- Output and handoff: Check whether it produces forms, downloadable reports, or CSV files, and whether those outputs fit your filing software or tax professional’s process.
- Scope of service: Determine whether it only calculates and reports crypto activity or also supports preparation and filing of a broader tax return.
Feature availability is provider-specific. Treat claims about supported sources, transaction types, and integrations as claims to verify for your own accounts and filing year, not as proof of comparative accuracy.
