For a conventional five-field cron schedule, use 0 0 * * * to start a cleanup job every day at midnight in the scheduler’s timezone. Kubernetes also accepts @daily for the same schedule. The expression controls when cleanup starts—not which uploads or logs are safe to remove, or how long to retain them.
What does the daily cron expression mean?
A standard five-field cron expression lists, in order, minute, hour, day of month, month, and day of week. In 0 0 * * *, the first two zeroes mean minute 0 of hour 0; each asterisk means every permitted value for that field. The result is one scheduled start per day at midnight.
In Kubernetes, @daily and @midnight are documented alternatives for this schedule. For a Linux cron daemon, confirm the implementation and the host’s configured timezone; cron behavior depends on the environment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhich time zone and scheduler should you choose?
Midnight is not a universal instant: it is midnight in the timezone used by the scheduler. Choose a zone deliberately, especially when the host’s local time may differ from the time used to interpret logs or retention rules.

| Standard cron | 0 0 * * * |
Check the daemon implementation and machine timezone. Behavior depends on the host environment. Linux cron manual |
| Kubernetes CronJob | 0 0 * * * or @daily |
Set .spec.timeZone to an explicit zone, such as Etc/UTC, if needed. Kubernetes does not support putting TZ or CRON_TZ in .spec.schedule. Configure overlap and missed-run behavior. Kubernetes CronJob documentation |
| systemd-cron | Cron-style entries translated to units and timers | Its documentation describes persistent timers that can run after boot when an execution was missed, and logging through the journal. Verify behavior for the installed package and version. Debian systemd-cron manual |
Choose based on the environment already running the workload, and check timezone control, overlap handling, missed-run behavior, and how you will find failures. A cron expression alone does not provide retries, monitoring, or a deletion policy.
How should a Kubernetes CronJob handle overlap and missed runs?
Kubernetes describes scheduled Job creation as approximate: “A CronJob creates Jobs approximately once per execution time of its schedule.” A cleanup task should therefore tolerate a run that is delayed, duplicated, or absent rather than assuming exact-once execution. Kubernetes also states, “The Jobs that you define should be idempotent.” In practice, repeating the same cleanup should not cause harmful side effects.
- Prevent concurrent cleanups if necessary:
.spec.concurrencyPolicydefaults toAllow. Setting it toForbidskips a new run while the previous Job is still active. - Decide how late a scheduled run may start:
.spec.startingDeadlineSecondscontrols the deadline for starting a missed Job. Select it according to whether a late cleanup is useful for your workload. - Account for scheduler uncertainty: Review Kubernetes’ missed-schedule behavior and make the cleanup safe to rerun. Do not rely on a schedule as a guarantee that exactly one Job will run at the intended instant.
How do you keep cleanup from deleting the wrong files?
Scheduling and retention are separate decisions. Before enabling deletion, define the exact directory scope and the application’s retention requirement. A daily trigger does not establish a safe age threshold, and the available facts do not specify your paths, ownership, or application behavior.
- Choose a narrow target path and confirm which application owns it.
- Set the age threshold from the application’s retention needs, not from the schedule.
- Run the selection in a dry-run or listing mode and inspect every candidate before enabling deletion.
- Enable deletion only after verifying the scope, permissions, and expected results; retain a way to inspect job output and failures.
For Kubernetes specifically, successful and failed Job history limits control how many completed Job objects are retained. They do not set how long upload or log files remain on disk. Kubernetes documents defaults of 3 successful Jobs and 1 failed Job for these history limits; they are controller-history defaults, not file-retention periods or universal cron defaults.

- Includes Raspberry Pi 5 with 2.4Ghz 64-bit quad-core CPU (8GB RAM)
- Includes 128GB Micro SD Card pre-loaded with 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS, USB MicroSD Card Reader
- CanaKit Turbine Black Case for the Raspberry Pi 5

What is the practical default?
Use 0 0 * * * when midnight in the scheduler’s configured timezone is the intended start time. Use Kubernetes’ @daily macro if preferred, set an explicit timezone where supported, and choose overlap and missed-run behavior for the deployment. Treat the cleanup program’s file-selection and retention rules as a separate safety policy.
