Credit card verification is a set of checks used to help confirm that a payment card or its user is legitimate. At online checkout, it often means entering the three- or four-digit security code printed on the card—but the term can also refer to account, billing-address, name, or identity checks. None of these checks alone guarantees that a transaction will be approved.

What does credit card verification mean?

The phrase has more than one meaning in payment processing. A merchant might use it for checking a card’s printed security code, confirming that an account is valid, comparing billing details, or asking the cardholder to complete an identity challenge. These are separate checks, not interchangeable names for the same step.

The printed code is called a card verification code or value. Depending on the card brand, it may be labeled CVV2, CVC2, CID, or CAV2. It is usually three or four digits printed on the front or back of the card. Visa describes its CVV2 as three digits on the signature panel. PCI Security Standards Council (PCI SSC) explains how merchants use these codes.

Which checks might a payment use?

Check What it checks How it is used
Card security code The code printed on the payment card Often requested for online, mail, or telephone purchases to help check that the customer has access to the card. The issuer validates the submitted code during authorization.
Account verification Whether an account or payment credential is valid Can be used to check an account separately from a purchase. The exact process depends on the payment service.
Address Verification Service (AVS) Submitted billing-address information, such as street and postal details Compares submitted information with the billing address on file. It does not validate the printed security code.
Account Name Inquiry (ANI) A supplied name Where supported, compares the name with issuer records.
3-D Secure authentication The cardholder’s identity or transaction risk The issuer may approve authentication in the background or ask the customer for an additional step, such as a one-time password or biometric confirmation.

Visa lists account verification, AVS, ANI, and CVV2 validation as distinct services, and describes the 3-D Secure authentication flow separately. Availability and implementation vary by payment network, issuer, merchant, and region; these examples are not universal requirements. See Visa’s 3-D Secure guide, Visa’s cardholder information verification overview, and Visa Developer’s Payment Account Validation guide.

What happens when you enter the security code?

For a card-not-present purchase, the merchant may submit the card details and security code as part of the payment request. The issuer—or the payment network acting for it—checks the code during authorization. Visa’s technical description says the issuer side recalculates the expected value using cryptographic keys and compares it with the submitted value. A match is one signal in the payment decision, not proof of identity or a promise of approval.

AVS and ANI work differently: they compare billing-address or name information with issuer records where those services are supported. A match or mismatch may inform the decision, but it is not the same as checking the security code.

How is verification different from authentication and authorization?

Authentication checks who the cardholder is. A 3-D Secure flow may happen in the background when a transaction is considered low risk, or it may prompt for a one-time password or biometric confirmation when more evidence is needed. That challenge is different from entering the printed card code.

Authorization is the issuer’s decision about whether a transaction can proceed, considering factors such as funds, account status, and risk. A card can pass a verification check and still be declined at authorization. Visa describes the broader payment lifecycle as authentication, authorization, clearing, and settlement: clearing exchanges transaction details, while settlement transfers funds between the issuer and acquirer. Visa’s guide to 3-D Secure outlines these distinctions.

How should you handle a verification request?

  • Enter the printed security code only in a payment flow you trust and when it is needed for that transaction.
  • Treat the code as sensitive authentication data. A normal request during card-not-present checkout does not mean it is safe to share in an unrelated message or channel.
  • Distinguish a printed code from a bank-app prompt, texted one-time passcode, PIN, or biometric challenge; these are different credentials or authentication steps.
  • If a merchant asks to keep the security code for a future purchase, ask how the payment will be handled without retaining it.

Can a merchant save the security code for later?

No. PCI SSC says merchants must not store the card verification code after authorization, even if it is encrypted. It is not needed for card-on-file or recurring transactions, and customer permission does not make post-authorization storage permissible under PCI DSS. PCI SSC’s recurring-transaction FAQ explains the rule; its FAQ on sensitive authentication data explains why the restriction applies.
