The Federal Communications Commission’s 2024 benchmark for fixed broadband is at least 100 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload. That is a regulatory benchmark for assessing broadband availability—not a guarantee of the speed at a particular home or a universal rule for how much speed a household needs. The FCC also set a separate long-term goal of 1,000 Mbps download and 500 Mbps upload.
What does “high-speed internet” mean?
For its 2024 assessment of fixed broadband, the FCC defined advanced telecommunications capability as access to at least 100 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload. It raised the benchmark from 25/3 Mbps, concluding that the older benchmark no longer supported the advanced functions it assessed. FCC 24-27
The two figures describe different directions of data transfer. Download speed measures how quickly a connection receives data; upload speed measures how quickly it sends data back. So a 100/20 Mbps benchmark means 100 Mbps down and 20 Mbps up—not 100 Mbps in both directions.
The FCC’s separate long-term goal is 1,000 Mbps download and 500 Mbps upload. It is a goal, not the current 100/20 Mbps benchmark.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Does the benchmark tell you how fast your internet will be?
No. The benchmark is a regulatory measure of fixed broadband capability, not a promise about the service available at your address or the speed you will measure inside your home. The FCC’s sources also do not establish a single speed requirement for every household.
Advertised availability is address-specific. The FCC National Broadband Map displays providers, connection technologies, and maximum advertised download and upload speeds reported for a location. Those listings are not an in-home speed test. If the map appears inaccurate, the FCC provides a process for challenging its information.

What connection technologies are included?
Fixed broadband can reach a home or business through different technologies. The FCC uses the following categories in its reporting; the category describes the connection type, not a universal speed guarantee.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Copper wire, including DSL: fixed wireline service over copper.
- Cable or HFC: service delivered over coaxial cable or hybrid fiber-coaxial infrastructure.
- Fiber to the premises: fiber reaches the home or business end user. The FCC category excludes fiber to the curb.
- Satellite: fixed service using geostationary or non-geostationary satellites.
- Terrestrial fixed wireless: a fixed connection delivered wirelessly over land. FCC categories distinguish unlicensed, licensed, and licensed-by-rule spectrum; its licensed category includes fixed service provided over a 4G LTE or 5G-NR mobile network.
A technology label alone cannot tell you the speed offered at your location. Check the reported offerings for the exact address rather than assuming a particular technology always means a particular rate.

How to check what is available at your address
- Open the FCC National Broadband Map.
- Enter the home or business address you want to check.
- Review the reported providers, technologies, and maximum advertised download and upload speeds for that location.
- If a listing seems wrong, use the FCC’s availability challenge process.
The map helps you check reported availability; it does not measure the speed your devices receive at home.
