A kiss is not one universal gesture with one fixed meaning. Lip-to-lip contact can express romantic or sexual intimacy, but kissing and kiss-like contact also serve as greetings, family affection, respect, forgiveness, religious practice and ritual. Whether a gesture is “a kiss,” and what it communicates, depends on the body contact involved, the relationship, the setting, local convention and the people’s consent.

The clearest cross-cultural definition is deliberately narrow: a 2015 study defined romantic-sexual kissing as lip-to-lip contact that “may or may not be prolonged.” Under that definition, the practice appeared in 46% of 168 sampled cultures—not 46% of the world’s people. Other gestures commonly called kisses belong to different social categories.

What counts as a kiss?

In ordinary speech, “kiss” can describe several actions. A romantic partner’s lip-to-lip contact, a parent kissing a child’s forehead, a cheek-to-cheek greeting, a respectful kiss exchanged in a church, a kiss directed at a religious icon and a sniffing gesture may all be described with the same English word. They are not interchangeable social acts.

  • What is the social function? Is it romantic or sexual intimacy, a greeting, family affection, respect, forgiveness or ritual?
  • Who is involved and where? Partners, relatives, friends, acquaintances and worshippers may follow different conventions, and public and private settings can differ.
  • Is it expected and welcome? A local custom does not remove an individual’s right to accept, decline or negotiate physical contact.

This framework avoids treating every mouth, cheek or nose contact as evidence of romance. It also avoids the opposite mistake: assuming that a non-romantic gesture is somehow not a “real” kiss. Communities can have their own terms and categories for both.

Romantic-sexual lip-to-lip kissing

For the cross-cultural comparison by William R. Jankowiak, Shelly L. Volsche and Justin R. Garcia, the key behavior was romantic-sexual lip-to-lip contact. The definition allows the contact to be brief or prolonged. It concerns intimacy between people understood as romantic or sexual partners; it does not include every affectionate kiss between relatives, friends or worshippers.

Greeting and cheek kisses

A cheek kiss or cheek-to-cheek touch can be a conventional greeting that communicates warmth, familiarity, respect or welcome. The same physical gesture may be romantic in one relationship and entirely routine in another. A greeting convention can also vary by city, family, generation, workplace, event and whether the interaction is public or private. No single “cheek-kiss rule” applies to everyone in a country or region.

Family affection

Parents may kiss children, relatives may kiss one another, and caregivers may kiss babies. These acts can signal attachment, comfort, protection or celebration without implying romantic or sexual interest. Treating every kiss as a romantic signal erases this important category.

Respectful, religious and ritual kisses

A kiss can mark respect, forgiveness, greeting in a religious community or reverence toward an object. The gesture’s meaning comes from the setting and shared practice rather than from lip-to-lip intimacy.

Sniffing kisses

Some kiss-like practices involve inhaling or smelling rather than pressing lips together. They may communicate tenderness, recognition or respect. Calling them “sniffing kisses” distinguishes their sensory action from a romantic lip kiss.

Is romantic kissing universal?

No—not according to the best-known systematic comparison cited here. Jankowiak, Volsche and Garcia’s peer-reviewed 2015 article, “Is the Romantic–Sexual Kiss a Near Human Universal?”, examined 168 cultures using the eHRAF World Cultures database, the Standard Cross-Cultural Sample and a selective survey of ethnographers. Romantic-sexual lip-to-lip kissing appeared in 46% of those sampled cultures.

The denominator matters. “46%” describes the proportion of cultures in that particular sample in which the defined behavior was documented. It is not a percentage of individuals, households or the global population, and it should not be converted into a claim that 54% of people never kiss romantically. Documentation can differ in depth, terminology and observer access, while people within one culture can have diverse practices.

The authors found no evidence that romantic-sexual kissing was universal or near-universal in humans. They also reported a correlation between the frequency of romantic-sexual kissing and relative social complexity. A correlation indicates that the two measures varied together in their data; it does not show that one causes the other, nor does it establish a single social path by which kissing develops.

Common forms of kissing and what they can mean

The table below compares broad forms without turning them into rigid worldwide categories. The same form can carry different meanings in different relationships.

Form Typical contact Possible social function What cannot be assumed
Romantic-sexual kiss Lip-to-lip, brief or prolonged Romantic or sexual intimacy That every lip kiss is romantic, or that everyone in a community uses it
Greeting or cheek kiss Cheek contact, sometimes with a light kiss Greeting, warmth, familiarity or respect That it signals attraction or is expected in every setting
Family-affection kiss Often cheek, forehead or lips, depending on family practice Attachment, comfort, care or celebration That it has romantic meaning
Respectful or religious kiss Contact with a person, hand, object or icon Respect, forgiveness, blessing or reverence That it expresses sexual intimacy
Sniffing kiss Gentle contact combined with inhaling or smelling Respect, tenderness, recognition or affection That it is simply a shortened romantic kiss

What the Alutiiq example shows

The Alutiiq Museum’s language resource illustrates why translating every form as one generic “kiss” can mislead. It records separate Alutiiq terms for distinct actions and settings:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Alutiiq term Meaning described by the museum Example of use
meluuwaq A respectful kiss Used in church to greet friends and share forgiveness, and for kissing religious icons
cingaq A sniffing kiss A gentle, respectful kiss in which the kisser inhales, including a grandparent kissing a baby
pucuurluku A romantic lip kiss Used for romantic lip-to-lip contact

These terms do not prove that every Alutiiq person uses each gesture in exactly the same way. They do demonstrate that one language can distinguish respect, sniffing and romance rather than treating them as one undifferentiated act. The example is useful far beyond this community: whenever a translation uses the word “kiss,” ask what physical action and social purpose the original term identifies.

How to tell whether a kiss is romantic, friendly or ritual

No single body part provides a reliable interpretation by itself. Use context in a deliberate order.

1. Identify the contact

Start with what happened physically. Lip-to-lip contact fits the 2015 study’s romantic-sexual definition only when the surrounding relationship and intent are romantic or sexual. Cheek contact, a forehead kiss, a sniff, a kiss on a hand, or contact with an icon belongs to a different descriptive category unless the participants give it another meaning.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

2. Identify the relationship

Partners, parents and children, grandparents and babies, close friends, acquaintances and worshippers do not occupy the same social role. A gesture that is ordinary between relatives may be inappropriate between coworkers. A greeting between friends may be mistaken for flirtation by an observer who does not know the relationship.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Identify the setting and occasion

Church services, funerals, family reunions, holidays, first meetings, departures and private encounters can each carry different conventions. A person who kisses a friend’s cheek at a familiar celebration may not want that contact in a workplace or with a stranger. Public visibility is also a poor measure of emotional importance: Goethe University Frankfurt’s 2026 feature on anthropologist Catherine Whittaker notes that intimacy can be expressed differently or more privately in different societies.

4. Look for local convention, not a national stereotype

“People in country X kiss this way” is usually too broad to guide a real interaction. Norms can vary by locality, language group, religion, class, age, gender expectations, migration history, family practice and individual preference. A convention may also change over time or after a public-health event. Use a local person’s explanation and the immediate situation rather than a simplified country label.

5. Confirm willingness

Even a customary greeting is not automatically welcome. Pause, offer a verbal greeting, follow the other person’s lead or ask directly. A person can accept a handshake but decline a cheek kiss, or prefer no physical greeting at all. Consent is relevant to every form of contact, including gestures described as respectful or routine.

Why a cheek kiss is not automatically romantic

Observers often read a cheek kiss as flirtation because they associate kissing with romantic intimacy. In many settings, however, the gesture functions as a social greeting. Warmth and familiarity can be present without sexual attraction. The reverse is also possible: a cheek contact can be intimate in a particular relationship.

To interpret one accurately, consider who initiated it, whether the other person reciprocated, what greetings are usual in that setting, how the participants describe the relationship and whether the contact continued beyond the conventional gesture. None of these clues is conclusive on its own. When the meaning matters, the participants’ own explanation is more reliable than an outsider’s assumption.

Respectful and religious kisses

Respectful kissing can involve another person, a hand, a sacred object or an icon. The Alutiiq Museum’s description of meluuwaq includes greeting friends in church, sharing forgiveness and kissing religious icons. In such a setting, the act marks a relationship to community, faith or ritual. Its meaning cannot be inferred from the lip contact alone.

Ritual actions may be prescribed for a particular occasion, optional for some participants or avoided by others. A visitor should not touch a person or sacred object merely because a ritual kiss is visible. Observe instructions, ask an authorized member of the community and accept a refusal without pressing for an explanation.

Sniffing kisses and the limits of origin stories

A sniffing kiss combines gentle contact with inhalation. The Alutiiq example describes cingaq as a respectful gesture, including a grandparent’s kiss to a baby. That description shows a distinct social meaning, not a failed or incomplete lip kiss.

A 2025 Texas A&M feature discusses ideas preserved in anthropologist Vaughn Bryant’s notes, including the possibility that smelling helped people recognize one another and may have preceded some kissing behaviors. This is a hypothesis, not an established explanation for all kissing. The same feature refers to early references in India that had been cited in Bryant’s notes, but neither that material nor the sniffing idea settles a single evolutionary pathway.

Where did kissing originate?

The oldest written evidence discussed here comes from Mesopotamia. University of Copenhagen researchers Troels Pank Arbøll and Sophie Lund Rasmussen describe cuneiform sources showing kissing in romantic, friendship and family contexts at least 4,500 years ago. This is evidence that people documented kissing that long ago; it is not a date at which kissing began.

Written records survive unevenly, and many ancient communities left no comparable documents. A behavior can exist long before it is recorded, and similar practices can arise in more than one place. Arbøll therefore cautions that kissing should not be treated as a custom that originated exclusively in one region and then spread outward. The evidence is consistent with kissing being practiced in multiple ancient cultures over several millennia.

“Earliest recorded kiss” is consequently a safer phrase than “first kiss.” It identifies the earliest surviving evidence in a particular record, not the beginning of a human behavior.

  3. Relationship and setting: Specify partners, relatives, friends, acquaintances, worshippers and whether the setting is public, private, formal or casual.
  4. Convention and consent: Ask whether the gesture is expected there and whether both people welcome it on that occasion.

This is a descriptive checklist, not a rigid taxonomy. A single act can have more than one function, and participants may disagree about what it means. Recording the context preserves that complexity.

Practical guidance for cross-cultural encounters

Before meeting people

  • Learn the greeting options used in the specific community or event, not just a country-level stereotype.
  • Prepare a non-contact alternative such as a verbal greeting, wave or handshake if appropriate.
  • Check whether the setting is religious, ceremonial or private, because ordinary tourist behavior may be unsuitable there.

During the greeting

  1. Approach slowly enough for the other person to signal a preference.
  2. Offer a verbal greeting first or mirror the distance and posture the other person uses.
  3. If a cheek kiss or other contact appears likely but you are uncertain, ask a short question such as “Would you prefer a handshake?”
  4. Follow the agreed form once, without adding an uninvited second gesture.
  5. If the other person steps back, turns away or says no, stop immediately and continue the conversation without making the refusal awkward.

When you are the visitor

Do not treat a host’s customary greeting as permission to initiate the same gesture with everyone else. Ask whether the practice applies to guests, whether age or status changes it and whether photography or public display is appropriate. A local person may welcome a question more than an attempted imitation.

When explaining your own custom

Describe your preference rather than presenting it as a universal rule. “In my family we usually hug” leaves room for another family to do something different. Explain that you are comfortable with a verbal greeting if physical contact is uncertain.

Common interpretation mistakes

Mistake: treating all lip contact as romantic

Romantic-sexual lip-to-lip kissing is one category, not the definition of every kiss. Family affection, ritual and other local practices can involve the lips without romantic intent.

Mistake: treating every cheek kiss as harmless

A greeting can be conventional and still unwelcome to a particular person. Social expectation does not override consent or personal boundaries.

Mistake: using a country as the unit of etiquette

Countries contain many communities and settings. A rule that describes one family, city or generation may mislead someone elsewhere. Use the narrowest context available.

Mistake: assuming private intimacy is absent because public kissing is rare

Goethe University Frankfurt’s 2026 discussion emphasizes that Western European-style public kissing is not universal and that intimacy may be expressed more privately or through other practices. Visibility is not a complete measure of relationships.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mistake: turning an origin hypothesis into a fact

Smell, recognition and early references in India are discussed as possibilities in the Texas A&M feature, while Mesopotamian cuneiform provides early written evidence. Neither establishes a single birthplace or evolutionary cause.

What the evidence can—and cannot—tell us

Question Supported conclusion Conclusion not supported
Is romantic-sexual kissing universal? The 2015 comparison found it in 46% of 168 sampled cultures under its lip-to-lip definition. That 46% of people kiss romantically, or that everyone in the other cultures never does.
Are all kisses romantic? Kissing can be social, familial, respectful, religious, ritual or romantic. That a gesture’s meaning can be read from contact alone.
When was kissing first practiced? Mesopotamian written sources document kissing at least 4,500 years ago. That kissing began in Mesopotamia or spread from there worldwide.
Does a sniffing kiss have one origin? Alutiiq terminology documents a respectful sniffing kiss; smell and recognition are proposed hypotheses. That one evolutionary explanation is proven.
Can etiquette be assigned by country? Local convention, relationship, setting and individual preference all matter. A universal country-by-country rule that predicts every encounter.

The practical answer

Across cultures, a kiss is best understood as a family of embodied gestures rather than one universal act. Romantic-sexual lip-to-lip kissing is a specific category and was documented in 46% of 168 sampled cultures in the 2015 comparison. Cheek greetings, family kisses, respectful or religious kisses and sniffing kisses can look similar to an outsider while serving entirely different purposes.

When you encounter an unfamiliar gesture, describe the contact, identify the relationship and setting, learn the local convention and check that the person welcomes it. That approach is more accurate than assuming that every kiss is romantic—or that a visible custom applies to everyone around it.
