Coral bleaching is a stress response in which corals expel the microscopic algae that normally live in their tissues. The coral turns pale because much of its color came from those algae, and it loses a major source of energy. Bleaching does not automatically mean a coral is dead: some colonies recover when conditions return to normal, while prolonged or intense stress can lead to disease, starvation, reproductive failure and death. If enough corals die, the reef can lose the three-dimensional habitat that supports fish, invertebrates and coastal communities.

What is coral bleaching?

Shallow-water, reef-building corals live in a mutualistic relationship with photosynthetic algae commonly called zooxanthellae. The coral provides the algae with shelter, carbon dioxide and other materials. In return, the algae manufacture carbohydrates through photosynthesis, supply much of the coral’s energy, contribute oxygen and help process waste.

When the coral experiences environmental stress, it can expel the algae or the algae can lose their pigments. The exposed coral tissue is translucent, so the white calcium-carbonate skeleton shows through and the colony appears white or very pale. The coral itself has not necessarily disappeared; it has lost a critical partner.

Bleaching is therefore an observable condition, not a death certificate. A bleached colony may still feed, respire and reproduce at reduced levels. Its chance of recovery depends on the type of coral, the severity and duration of stress, water quality, disease pressure and whether conditions improve soon enough.

What happens to a coral after it bleaches?

Early stress and algae loss

Heat is the leading global driver, but the immediate biological event is the breakdown of the coral–algae partnership. As algae are lost, the coral receives less photosynthetic energy. It may draw on stored reserves, capture more plankton or alter its metabolism, but those compensations rarely replace the lost energy indefinitely.

Reduced growth and reproduction

Energy diverted to basic survival is energy unavailable for building the calcium-carbonate skeleton, repairing tissue or producing eggs and sperm. A colony can survive a bleaching episode yet grow more slowly and reproduce less successfully. That delayed effect matters because a reef may look alive while producing fewer new corals.

Disease and mortality risk

Prolonged or severe bleaching weakens coral tissue and increases vulnerability to disease, predators and additional heat waves. If stress continues, tissue death can expose the skeleton to algae and boring organisms. The colony may die in patches or across its entire surface. A dead framework can remain physically present for a time, but it no longer provides the same living functions.

Recovery when conditions improve

Some corals regain algae after temperatures, light levels or other stressors return to tolerable conditions. Recovery can take weeks to months, and a colony that regains color is not necessarily back to its former growth or reproductive capacity. Repeated bleaching leaves less time to rebuild energy reserves between events.

Why do corals bleach?

NOAA identifies unusually warm water, increasingly associated with climate change, as the leading cause of bleaching. Corals have a narrow temperature range in which their metabolism and algal partners function normally. Even a modest rise above a local seasonal maximum can trigger bleaching when it persists.

Heat is not the only pressure. NOAA lists changes in light or nutrients, runoff and pollution, unusually strong sunlight during hot conditions, and exposure to air during extreme low tides as possible causes or contributors. Local stressors can act together: polluted water may reduce a coral’s resilience during a heat wave, while sediment can block light or smother tissue.

Stressor How it can affect coral Important qualification
Unusually warm seawater Disrupts the coral–algae partnership and can cause bleaching NOAA identifies heat as the leading global cause; severity depends on temperature and duration
Excessive light Adds photosynthetic stress, especially when water is already warm High sunlight is a possible contributor, not a universal explanation
Nutrient changes Can alter algal growth and coral metabolism Effects vary with the nutrient and local conditions
Runoff and pollution Can impair water quality and reduce resilience Often acts alongside heat or other pressures
Extreme low tides Can leave shallow corals exposed to air and rapid heating Relevant only where tidal and weather conditions produce exposure

Because different stressors can overlap, two reefs that bleach in the same season may not face the same causes or have the same recovery prospects.

How bleaching changes a reef ecosystem

Loss of living coral habitat

Living coral provides surfaces, crevices and branching structures where fish shelter, feed and lay eggs. It also supports sponges, mollusks, crustaceans, worms and many microscopic organisms. When coral tissue dies, some of those relationships disappear immediately; others decline as the reef’s living cover shrinks.

Structural erosion

Reef-building corals add calcium carbonate faster than physical and biological forces remove it. After widespread mortality, that balance can reverse. Waves, storms, grazing organisms and boring sponges break down dead skeletons. Rubble fills crevices, branches collapse and the reef becomes flatter and less complex.

Structural complexity is ecological infrastructure. A high-relief reef offers more hiding places and feeding surfaces than a flattened one, so erosion can reduce the number and variety of organisms the habitat can support even after the bleaching event itself has ended.

Food-web changes

Coral decline can alter who eats what and where species can live. Fish that depend directly on coral polyps may lose food. Small damselfish and other territorial species can lose shelter, while predators that feed on reef-associated fish may find fewer prey. Algae may spread over dead surfaces, favoring herbivores but making it harder for new coral larvae to settle.

These are potential cascades rather than identical outcomes at every reef. Species composition, currents, depth, water quality, fishing pressure and storms determine which links weaken first and whether another habitat-forming organism can replace coral.

What bleaching means for marine life

  • Reef fish: Loss of branching and hole-filled habitat can reduce nursery space, shelter from predators and places to feed or spawn.
  • Invertebrates: Crabs, shrimp, mollusks, worms and echinoderms that use coral surfaces or crevices may lose habitat or food.
  • Microorganisms: Changes in living coral and algal cover can reorganize microbial communities that influence nutrient cycling and disease.
  • Predators: Large fish and other predators can be affected indirectly when reef prey become less abundant or move elsewhere.
  • Coral-dependent specialists: Species with narrow habitat or dietary requirements generally have fewer alternatives when living coral disappears.

Not every reef species declines at the same speed. Mobile animals may temporarily relocate, and some generalist species can use rubble or algal areas. That flexibility does not replace the biodiversity and functions of a healthy, structurally complex reef.

Why reef decline affects people

Coral reefs provide food, income, coastal protection, recreation and support for local economies. NOAA reports that over half a billion people depend on reefs for food, income and protection. NOAA’s Office for Coastal Management reports that about 25% of marine species are found in, on or around coral reefs. These are broad reef-context figures, not estimates of damage from one bleaching event.

When reef structure erodes, waves can reach shore with less energy absorbed offshore, increasing vulnerability to flooding and erosion in some coastal settings. Declining fish habitat can affect catches and the livelihoods connected to fishing. Tourism, diving and recreation can also suffer when living coral and clear, diverse reef scenes are replaced by rubble or algal cover.

How large is the recent global bleaching event?

NOAA confirmed the fourth global mass bleaching event on April 15, 2024. In a June 2, 2026 update, NOAA said the event likely ended in 2025. For January 1, 2023 through September 30, 2025, NOAA Coral Reef Watch reported bleaching-level heat stress across approximately 84.4% of the world’s coral reef area and documented mass bleaching in at least 83 countries and territories.

The 84.4% figure describes the area exposed to bleaching-level heat stress detected by NOAA’s monitoring system. It is not the percentage of corals that died, the percentage of colonies directly observed bleaching or a measurement of habitat loss. NOAA’s NESDIS news report rounded the same broad estimate to 84%, so the figures differ in precision rather than describing separate global events.

NOAA waited for observations through the Southern Hemisphere summer before declaring the event likely over. Derek Manzello, coordinator of NOAA’s Coral Reef Watch, explained: “We needed to confirm that no widespread, large-scale bleaching was reported anywhere during the austral summer which ran from December 2025 through February 2026, before we were confident the event had ended.”

How the recent event compares with earlier bleaching

Event or measure Reported figure What it measures
2023–2025 global event 84.4% of world reef area, January 1, 2023–September 30, 2025 Bleaching-level heat stress reported by NOAA Coral Reef Watch, not mortality
2023–2025 global event At least 83 countries and territories Places where mass bleaching was documented
2014–2017 global event 70% of coral reef ecosystems worldwide affected by unusually warm water Historical heat impact estimate; not directly interchangeable with the newer area metric
2016 global measure 51% of reefs globally encompassed by heat stress NOAA coastal fast-facts historical measure
Northern and far-northern Great Barrier Reef, 2016 85% bleaching and 29% mortality among shallow-water corals Observed regional bleaching and death; not a global estimate

Comparisons are meaningful only when the metric, geography, period and evidence type match. A satellite heat-stress alert, a diver’s bleaching survey and a later mortality assessment answer different questions.

Field observations

Divers, scientists and reef managers record whether colonies are pale, fully white or apparently normal, often estimating the share of colonies affected and the severity of bleaching. Field observations can reveal local conditions that broad satellite pixels cannot.

Mortality and recovery surveys

Follow-up surveys determine how much tissue died, whether skeletons eroded and whether surviving colonies regained color or recruited new tissue. Mortality reports should not be substituted for heat-stress maps, and a heat-stress map should not be presented as a direct census of dead coral.

What determines whether a reef recovers?

  • Duration and intensity of stress: Short, mild exposure generally leaves more recovery capacity than repeated or prolonged heat.
  • Species and colony traits: Different corals tolerate heat, light and low tides differently.
  • Water quality: Lower pollution and sediment loads can reduce additional physiological pressure.
  • Time between events: Corals need time to rebuild energy reserves, grow skeleton and reproduce.
  • Physical disturbance: Storms, anchors and coastal construction can remove surviving structure.
  • Grazing and recruitment: Herbivores can limit algal overgrowth, while successful larval settlement helps replace losses.

Local conservation cannot remove the global warming trend by itself, but reducing local pressures can improve the odds that surviving colonies recover and that young corals establish.

What can reduce additional damage?

Effective responses operate at several scales. Cutting greenhouse-gas emissions addresses the dominant driver of rising ocean heat. Locally, managers can protect water quality by reducing sewage, sediment and polluted runoff; enforce sustainable fishing rules; protect herbivores and spawning areas; and limit physical damage from boats, anchors and coastal development.

During and after a bleaching event, monitoring should track living cover, disease, mortality, structural loss and recovery rather than relying on a single color survey. Reef restoration or coral nurseries may help in selected locations, but they cannot substitute for cooler, cleaner and less disturbed conditions. Their success depends on local ecology, repeated heat exposure and long-term maintenance.

How to interpret a bleaching report correctly

  1. Identify the metric. Ask whether the report describes heat stress, observed bleaching, coral mortality, reef-area change or species abundance.
  2. Check the period and location. A global percentage cannot predict what happened at one reef, bay or island.
  3. Separate cause from correlation. Heat may be the primary trigger while pollution, low tides, disease or storms influence severity.
  4. Look for follow-up data. Immediate bleaching observations do not establish how many corals later died or recovered.
  5. Consider the baseline. Repeated events can reduce recovery even when each individual event appears moderate.

The central ecological chain is straightforward: stress can remove coral algae; algae loss reduces energy; prolonged stress can kill coral; coral mortality can erode reef structure; habitat loss can affect marine life and the human benefits tied to reefs. The strength and timing of each link vary among species and places, so a single global statistic should never be treated as a forecast for an individual reef.
