Copy and paste transfers selected content from one place to another: copying leaves the original in place, while pasting inserts or retrieves a copy at the destination. The clipboard temporarily holds the copied data between those steps.
What does copy and paste mean?
When you copy text, an image, a file, or another supported item, the app puts a representation of that selection on the system clipboard. The source remains where it was. When you paste, the destination app retrieves clipboard data and inserts it or otherwise makes it available there. This is how content can move within one app or between apps. Microsoft Learn describes the clipboard’s transfer role, and its operation reference explains how applications place and retrieve data.
The clipboard is an intermediary, not the destination itself. What it can hold and where it can be pasted depend on the operating system, the app, and the type of content.
How do you copy and paste?
On a Mac
- Select the text or item you want to copy.
- Copy it with Command-C, choose Copy from the Edit menu, or use the app’s context menu.
- Click or place the insertion point where you want the content to go.
- Paste with Command-V or choose Paste from the app’s menu. In some text apps, Paste and Match Style pastes the text using the destination’s surrounding style.

In a terminal
Shortcuts can change with the platform and application. For example, Visual Studio Code documents Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V for terminals on Windows, Cmd+C and Cmd+V on macOS, and Ctrl+Shift+C and Ctrl+Shift+V on Linux. Those are terminal-specific examples, not universal shortcuts. Check the app’s menus or documentation when a familiar key combination behaves differently. VS Code’s terminal documentation lists these combinations.
How is cut different from copy?
Copy is for duplicating: it leaves the selected content at its original location and makes it available to paste elsewhere. Cut is for moving content when the app supports it: it removes the selection from its original location and makes it available to paste. Because app support varies, cut may not be available for every item or destination.

Where does copied text go?
Copied text goes to the system clipboard, where it remains available for a later paste or until another action replaces it. The clipboard connects the copy step to the paste step; it does not necessarily mean the content has been saved as a separate file.

Why might copy or paste not work?
- The item or destination is unsupported: Apps decide which content types can be copied, cut, or pasted, and some destinations accept only certain kinds of data.
- The shortcut is different: Key combinations vary across operating systems and applications, particularly in specialized interfaces such as terminals. Try the app’s Edit menu or context menu.
- The clipboard content changed: Copying something else can replace what was available to paste. Select and copy the intended content again, then paste at the destination.
Is it safe to copy sensitive information?
Be careful when copying passwords, payment details, or other private data. Microsoft Learn warns, “The clipboard should not be used to transfer sensitive data.” Android’s developer guidance likewise addresses sensitive copied data such as passwords and credit-card information. Microsoft Learn’s clipboard overview and Android Developers’ copy-and-paste guidance provide platform-specific context.
Clipboard feedback and handling differ by version. Android displays default copy feedback in Android 13 and later, according to Android Developers; that behavior does not establish what every device or earlier version shows. Android Developers documents that version-specific feedback.
