You need Nintendo Switch Joy-Con controllers to play Nintendo Switch Sports. Depending on the sport and mode, the game uses a paired set of Joy-Con, one Joy-Con, or a Joy-Con fitted into the Nintendo Switch Sports Leg Strap. Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers are not compatible. The game also does not support Handheld Mode, so Nintendo recommends TV Mode on a Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch OLED Model, or Nintendo Switch 2.
The official game is called Nintendo Switch Sports, not “Nintendo Switch Sports Resort.” “Resort” appears to be a mistaken title for the same game.

Controller compatibility at a glance
Nintendo’s support information describes controller arrangements by sport rather than promising one setup for the entire game. Use this table as a buying and setup guide.
| Controller or setup | Compatibility | When it is used |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch Joy-Con pair | Supported | Sports or modes that require two Joy-Con controllers, including local multiplayer arrangements that call for paired controllers |
| One Nintendo Switch Joy-Con | Supported | Sports or modes designed around a single motion controller |
| Joy-Con with the Nintendo Switch Sports Leg Strap | Supported for the applicable gameplay | Required for some Soccer gameplay; the accessory holds a left Joy-Con against the leg |
| Joy-Con 2 | Supported by the game in the setups Nintendo lists | Can be used with Nintendo Switch Sports, but it does not fit the Leg Strap |
| Nintendo Switch Pro Controller | Not compatible | It cannot replace Joy-Con for this game |
| Handheld Mode | Not supported | The game is intended to be played in TV Mode on a compatible full-size Switch system |
The number of controllers is therefore determined by the selected sport, whether you are playing alone or locally with others, and the console and accessory generation you own. There is no single controller count that applies to every activity.
#1 Best Overall
- Two Joy Con can be used independently in each hand, or together as 1 game controller when attached to the Joy Con grip
- They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy two player action in supported games
- Each Joy Con has a full set of buttons and can act as a standalone controller, and each includes an accelerometer and gyro sensor, making independent left and right motion control possible
Which Joy-Con setup does each type of play need?
Paired Joy-Con
A paired set is the safest purchase if you want access to the broadest range of controller arrangements. Nintendo lists paired Joy-Con among the supported configurations. Some activities use two controllers for one player, while local multiplayer can require each participant to have the controller arrangement specified by the chosen sport.
Having a pair does not mean every sport uses both controllers at once. Treat the pair as a flexible starting point, then check the on-screen instructions after selecting an activity. If the game requests an additional controller for another participant, that request reflects the selected mode rather than a universal requirement for the whole title.
A single Joy-Con
Nintendo also lists a single Joy-Con as a supported setup. This is useful for an activity designed around one motion controller or for a player configuration that assigns one controller to each participant.

Do not assume that one controller is enough for every activity. When you choose a sport, read its controller prompt before handing controllers to other players. The prompt is the authoritative instruction for that session because controller needs vary by sport and player setup.
Joy-Con and the Leg Strap
The Leg Strap is a sport-specific accessory, not a general replacement for a second Joy-Con. Nintendo says it is required for some Soccer gameplay. The official attachment instructions describe fitting a left Joy-Con into the strap and securing the strap to your leg.
If you plan to use the Soccer modes that require the accessory, make sure you have an original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con that fits the strap. Nintendo’s current compatibility guidance says Joy-Con 2 controllers do not fit it. On Nintendo Switch 2, original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con can connect wirelessly and be used with the Leg Strap according to Nintendo’s accessory guidance.
Why the Pro Controller is the wrong purchase
The Nintendo Switch Pro Controller is not compatible with Nintendo Switch Sports. Its conventional button-and-stick design does not satisfy the game’s supported Joy-Con controller arrangements, so buying one specifically for this title will not solve a controller shortage.

If you already own a Pro Controller, you can still use it for other Switch games, but you need compatible Joy-Con for Nintendo Switch Sports. For a buyer starting from zero, a Nintendo Switch Joy-Con pair is the most versatile supported controller purchase; add the Leg Strap only if the Soccer gameplay you want requires it.
Console and play-mode requirements
TV Mode is required
Nintendo Support states: “Nintendo Switch Sports does not support Handheld Mode.” The recommended experience is TV Mode on a Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch OLED Model, or Nintendo Switch 2. The motion-control setup needs the Joy-Con to be used as separate controllers rather than attached to the console.
For a normal Switch or Switch OLED Model, place the console in its dock and use the television display. On Nintendo Switch 2, follow the same TV-oriented approach and connect supported Joy-Con wirelessly when the game asks for them.
What this means for Nintendo Switch Lite
Nintendo’s FAQ discusses Nintendo Switch Lite alongside the other Switch systems, but its TV Mode recommendation names Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch OLED Model, and Nintendo Switch 2. Because Handheld Mode is unsupported and Nintendo does not include Switch Lite in that recommended TV list, a Switch Lite by itself does not meet the documented play-mode recommendation.

How to set up controllers before playing
- Use a supported console arrangement. Put a Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch OLED Model, or Nintendo Switch 2 into TV Mode. Do not begin in Handheld Mode.
- Charge the Joy-Con. Charge each controller you intend to use, including any extra controllers for local players. A controller that is powered off can look like a compatibility problem when it is simply out of charge.
- Pair or reconnect the controllers. From the Switch HOME menu, open Controllers, choose Change Grip/Order, and follow the pairing prompt. Use the same screen to make sure each player’s controller is recognized before launching the game.
- Start Nintendo Switch Sports and select the activity. Wait for the activity-specific controller instruction. It will indicate whether that session expects a single Joy-Con, paired Joy-Con, or an accessory.
- Attach the Leg Strap only when required. For the applicable Soccer gameplay, place the left Joy-Con in the Leg Strap as shown in Nintendo’s attachment instructions, tighten the strap comfortably, and keep the controller secured before starting motion play.
- Add local players according to the prompt. Multiplayer may require additional accessories or controllers. Add them only after checking the selected sport’s arrangement; purchasing or pairing a fixed number for every activity is unnecessary.
- Test recognition before competing. Move the controller when prompted and confirm that the game shows the correct player or accessory. If the wrong controller is assigned, return to the Switch controller-order screen and pair the intended Joy-Con again.
Joy-Con generations: original Joy-Con versus Joy-Con 2
Using original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con
Original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con are the most straightforward choice when you want every supported accessory option. Nintendo lists them for single-controller and paired-controller play, and the left Joy-Con can be fitted into the Leg Strap for the Soccer modes that require it.
Using Joy-Con 2
Nintendo says Joy-Con 2 controllers can be used with Nintendo Switch Sports. Their important limitation is physical: they do not fit the Nintendo Switch Sports Leg Strap. If your planned play includes a strap-required Soccer mode, keep an original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con available even if you normally use Joy-Con 2.
This is an accessory-generation issue, not a general game incompatibility. Joy-Con 2 remains a supported controller option for the game’s other listed arrangements, but it cannot be treated as a substitute for a strap-compatible left Joy-Con.
Choosing what to buy
If you own no compatible controllers
Start with a Nintendo Switch Joy-Con pair. A pair covers both the single-controller and paired-controller arrangements described by Nintendo, subject to the sport you select. This avoids buying a Pro Controller that the game cannot use.
If Soccer is your priority
Check whether the Soccer mode you intend to play specifies the Leg Strap. If it does, obtain the Nintendo Switch Sports Leg Strap and an original left Joy-Con that fits it. The strap is not a universal requirement, so do not buy it solely for unrelated sports.
If you already own Joy-Con 2
You can use Joy-Con 2 for the game’s supported controller arrangements, but plan separately for strap-required Soccer. The physical fit limitation means Joy-Con 2 cannot be inserted into the Leg Strap.

- Expand your collection with these colorful pastel Joy-Con controllers.
If you own only a Pro Controller
Keep it for compatible games and add supported Joy-Con for Nintendo Switch Sports. There is no software setting that makes the Pro Controller compatible with this title.
Common setup problems and fixes
The game does not respond to a Pro Controller
This is expected behavior, not a pairing failure. Switch to a supported Joy-Con arrangement. Re-pairing the Pro Controller will not make it usable in Nintendo Switch Sports.
The game asks for another controller
Read the sport and mode prompt before assuming something is broken. Nintendo documents different arrangements for different sports and player configurations, and the official product information warns that multiplayer can require additional accessories. Pair the requested Joy-Con through HOME > Controllers > Change Grip/Order, then return to the activity.
The Leg Strap will not hold the controller
Confirm that you are inserting a left original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con. Joy-Con 2 does not fit the strap. Re-seat the controller in the holder, secure the strap comfortably, and check the attachment instructions before starting motion play.
The game cannot be played while the console is handheld
That limitation is intentional: Handheld Mode is unsupported. Move the console to the recommended TV Mode setup on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch OLED Model, or Nintendo Switch 2, then pair the Joy-Con as separate controllers.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA controller is paired but assigned to the wrong player
Exit to the Switch controller-order screen, choose Change Grip/Order, and pair the controllers in the order the players will use them. Reopen the sport and follow its controller prompt rather than relying on the assignment from a previous game.
Quick Recap
Quick decision checklist
- Use Joy-Con, not a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.
- Expect the required arrangement to vary by sport and local player setup.
- Plan to play in TV Mode; Handheld Mode is unsupported.
- Choose original Joy-Con if you need the Leg Strap.
- Remember that Joy-Con 2 works with the game but does not fit the Leg Strap.
- Buy the Leg Strap only for the Soccer gameplay that requires it.
- Check the activity’s prompt before deciding how many controllers or accessories are needed.
