Yes. Blizzard’s current World of Warcraft Starter Edition lets a new or returning Battle.net account play the modern game without an active subscription or game time. It is not a timed 10-day demo: access is limited by character level and by specific social, trading and content features. The practical dividing line is level 20; continuing past that point requires WoW game time or a subscription. WoW Classic versions are not included.
Starter Edition at a glance
The free trial is an account tier for the modern version of World of Warcraft. You can create characters, follow introductory quests, use the level-appropriate dungeon queue and experience the game through the trial’s level ceiling. The table shows the current boundaries described in Blizzard’s support guidance.
| Area | Starter Edition (free trial) | WoW subscription or game time |
|---|---|---|
| Character progression | Characters can advance to level 20. | Progression continues beyond level 20; Blizzard’s current guidance says content through level 80 is available with game time or a subscription. |
| Quests and dungeons | Playable quests and dungeons up to level 20, including level-20 dungeons. | Higher-level dungeons and raids become available. |
| Recent-expansion content | Most current-expansion zones, quests and allied characters are unavailable. | The modern game covered by the subscription is available, except for the newest expansion, which must be purchased separately. |
| Chat | /say and /party chat are available with restrictions. |
Unrestricted in-game chat and additional social channels are available. |
| Friends and groups | You can whisper World of Warcraft friends added by character name and use Random Dungeon Finder, but cannot form parties manually or use guild functions. | Guilds, broader grouping and normal social functions are available. |
| Economy | No trade, mail, Auction House or Warband Bank deposits and withdrawals; each character can hold up to 1,000 gold. | Trading, mail, the Auction House and Warband Bank functions are available. |
| Game versions | Modern World of Warcraft only. | Subscription access applies to the modern game; WoW Classic games are a separate exclusion from the trial. |
These are policy limits, not performance limits on a particular computer. Blizzard can change them with an account-system update or patch, so check the current Starter Edition support page if a restriction is decisive for you.

What you can play before level 20
Character creation and the opening zone
Fresh accounts begin in Exile’s Reach, the introductory starting area designed to teach modern World of Warcraft basics. After the introduction, the game directs new characters toward Dragonflight content. That direction does not mean the full expansion is included: the trial remains bounded by its level and feature rules, and most recent-expansion content is locked to Starter accounts.

Quests and ordinary exploration
All playable content up to the trial ceiling is available, including quests intended for level 20 characters. You can use the early game to learn class abilities, professions and combat, and to decide whether the game’s controls and pacing suit you before paying. The account can create new modern-WoW characters and level any of them to the permitted ceiling.
Dungeons and the queue
Level-20 dungeons are part of the free allowance. Starter characters can also use Random Dungeon Finder, so you are not limited to solo questing. The queue is the supported way to find dungeon groups at this account tier; manual party formation is one of the functions Blizzard blocks until the account is upgraded.
The level-20 boundary
Level 20 is a hard progression stop for Starter Edition characters. Once a character reaches it, the account does not gain access to levels above that boundary until you add WoW game time or a subscription. The restriction applies per character, so you can create and experiment with multiple classes, but each remains subject to the same ceiling.

The cap is separate from the amount of time you have played. Blizzard’s current pages describe the product as level- and feature-limited rather than as a countdown trial. You should therefore plan around the level gate, not around an advertised number of free days.
Chat, friends and group restrictions
Chat you can use
Starter characters may use /say and /party chat. There is an additional visibility rule for /say: a character that is ten or more levels higher will not see the trial character’s messages. This can make conversations in a mixed-level area appear one-sided even when nobody has muted anyone.
Whispers and friend lists
You can whisper World of Warcraft friends who were added by character name. RealID friends are not available to Starter accounts, so the cross-game identity and messaging features associated with RealID cannot be used from the free tier.

Guild-related functions are unavailable, and you cannot form a party yourself. Random Dungeon Finder is the exception for organized group play.

Gold limit
Blizzard’s current Starter Edition guidance permits up to 1,000 gold per character. The allowance is tracked per character rather than as a shared account balance, so creating another character does not raise the limit on an existing one.
Transactions that are disabled
Starter accounts cannot trade with other players, send or receive mail, use the Auction House, or access normal value-added services. They also cannot deposit into or withdraw from the Warband Bank. These restrictions prevent the free tier from functioning as an unrestricted economic account, even if the character has earned gold through quests.

What upgrading changes
Adding WoW game time or a subscription removes the Starter Edition boundary. Blizzard says that content beyond level 20 and through level 80 becomes available, including higher-level dungeons and raids. The upgrade also enables guilds, unrestricted in-game chat and the Auction House, along with the other normal social and account functions that are blocked on the trial.
The subscription boundary is worth reading carefully. Blizzard’s current modes guide treats the subscription as access to the modern game except for the newest expansion. In that guide, The War Within is included in the subscription from January 20, 2026, while Midnight requires a separate purchase. Buying game time therefore does not automatically buy the newest expansion.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsModern WoW versus WoW Classic
The free Starter Edition applies to modern World of Warcraft. It is not available for WoW Classic games. If you launch a Classic version expecting the same level-20 free access, the modern trial rules will not carry over. Choose the modern World of Warcraft client when testing the free tier, and treat Classic access as a separate product decision.

How to start the free trial
- Use a Battle.net account. The Starter Edition is available to both new and existing Battle.net accounts that do not currently have an active WoW subscription or game time.
- Install and launch modern World of Warcraft. Select the current modern game rather than a WoW Classic game.
- Create a character. A fresh account starts in Exile’s Reach. You can make additional modern-WoW characters if you want to try different classes.
- Play through the introductory quests. After Exile’s Reach, follow the game’s direction toward Dragonflight content while staying within the Starter Edition’s level and feature limits.
- Use the permitted group tools. Queue for eligible level-20 dungeons with Random Dungeon Finder. For communication, use
/say,/partyand character-name whispers to eligible WoW friends. - Upgrade only when the boundary matters. Add WoW game time or a subscription when you need progression beyond level 20, higher-level activities, guilds, unrestricted chat, trading or the Auction House.
Common points of confusion
“Is this still a 10-day trial?”
No. The current official description is a Starter Edition with a level ceiling and feature restrictions. It is not presented as a 10-day offer, so older articles that describe a fixed trial period are outdated for the current policy.
“Can I reach the newest expansion zones for free?”
Not generally. Starter accounts do not have access to most recent-expansion content, including its quests, zones and allied characters. The post-introduction route toward Dragonflight content should not be read as a promise that every expansion activity is open.
“Why can’t I see a high-level player’s /say message?”
The Starter Edition has a deliberate visibility rule: characters at least ten levels above the trial character do not see that trial character’s /say messages. Use an allowed party or friend whisper when communication is necessary.
“Can I mail gold to another character or sell items on the Auction House?”
No. Mail, player trading, the Auction House and Warband Bank deposits and withdrawals are disabled on Starter accounts. The 1,000-gold allowance does not override those transaction restrictions.
“Can I join a guild or invite friends into a party?”
Guild-related functions and manual party formation require an upgraded account. The free tier still supports Random Dungeon Finder, which is why a trial character can enter eligible dungeons without being able to assemble a conventional party.
Who should upgrade, and when?
- Stay on Starter Edition if you are learning the game, testing classes, completing introductory quests and level-20 dungeons, or deciding whether the combat and interface suit you.
- Add game time or a subscription if you want any progression after the level gate, higher-level dungeons or raids, guild membership, unrestricted chat, manual groups, trading, mail or the Auction House.
- Budget separately for Midnight if that newest expansion is the content you specifically want; the current modes guidance says it is not included automatically with the subscription.
- Choose the correct client before troubleshooting. The Starter Edition is for modern World of Warcraft, not WoW Classic.
For a first look at modern WoW, the free tier is substantial enough to test the opening game and level-20 activities. It becomes unsuitable when your goal depends on progression, expansion-specific content, guild life or the player economy, because those are intentional account-level gates rather than temporary technical limitations.
