To play Grand Theft Auto VI at launch, you need a PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, or Xbox Series S. Rockstar has officially listed those platforms, with the PlayStation 5 described on its GTA VI page as “Plays Best On PlayStation 5.” A PC version is not listed in the current official platform information, so Rockstar has not announced PC availability or a PC release date in the materials currently available.
Rockstar’s current release date is November 19, 2026, although release schedules can change. The safest buying decision is therefore based on the console you already own: do not replace a supported console merely because another platform has a marketing label, but do not buy an older-generation console expecting GTA VI to run on it.
Which platforms are officially announced for GTA VI?
Rockstar’s current platform listing names PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar’s customer-support page says the game can be pre-ordered for those platforms, while the official GTA VI page displays PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as the available platforms. You can verify the listing on Rockstar’s platforms, editions, and versions page and the official GTA VI page.
| Platform | Current GTA VI status | What can be stated accurately |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | Officially listed and available for pre-order | Supported; Rockstar labels it “Plays Best On PlayStation 5.” |
| Xbox Series X | Included in the official Xbox Series X|S listing | Officially supported. |
| Xbox Series S | Included in the official Xbox Series X|S listing | Officially supported. |
| PC | Not listed in the official platform sources checked | Rockstar has not announced PC availability or a PC release date in those materials. |
The platform evidence does not provide GTA VI-specific resolution, frame-rate, loading-time, or graphics-mode figures. It also does not establish a technical performance ranking between Xbox Series X and Series S. Those details should not be inferred from GTA V, from general console specifications, or from trailers.

What do you need on PlayStation?
PlayStation 5 is the supported Sony console
A standard PlayStation 5 is the Sony platform Rockstar has announced for GTA VI. The official GTA VI page uses the phrase “Plays Best On PlayStation 5”. That is Rockstar’s positioning, not an independently measured comparison. It does not establish a specific resolution or frame rate, and it does not mean Xbox owners are using an unsupported version.
Rockstar’s current materials do not identify a required PS5 revision, storage capacity, bundle, television, controller, headset, or other accessory. If you already own a PS5, the announced platform requirement is satisfied; there is no sourced reason in the available information to purchase a particular PS5 model solely for GTA VI.
How to interpret “Plays Best”
Use the wording as a preference signal rather than a technical specification. Rockstar captured its August 2026 extended-look footage entirely on PlayStation 5 and again listed PS5 and Xbox Series X|S as the platforms. Footage captured on one console does not prove that it delivers higher resolution, a steadier frame rate, or shorter loading times than another. Rockstar’s extended-look announcement is available on Rockstar Newswire.
Can you play GTA VI on Xbox Series X or Series S?
Xbox Series X
Xbox Series X is explicitly included in Rockstar’s Xbox Series X|S platform listing. If you own Series X, it is an officially announced GTA VI console and does not require a move to PlayStation 5 based on the current information.
Xbox Series S
Xbox Series S is also included in the same official Xbox Series X|S listing. That means Series S is an announced platform, not an assumption based on another game’s compatibility. However, Rockstar has not published GTA VI-specific resolution, frame-rate, visual-quality, or feature differences between Series S and Series X in the cited materials. Avoid treating the two consoles as technically identical, but also avoid claiming a particular limitation until Rockstar provides one.
Choosing between the two Xbox models
If you are deciding between Xbox consoles specifically for GTA VI, the official evidence confirms compatibility but does not supply a performance comparison. Base the decision on factors Rockstar has not contradicted—such as your existing Xbox library, preferred ecosystem, display, and budget—rather than an invented GTA VI benchmark. An existing Series S owner has an officially listed platform; an existing Series X owner does too.

Is GTA VI coming to PC?
Rockstar has not announced a PC version in the official platform materials currently available. PC does not appear in the platform listings on the support page or the official GTA VI page. There is therefore no sourced PC release date and no official PC system-requirements list to use for a purchase or upgrade decision.

This is a statement about what Rockstar has announced, not a prediction about what may happen later. It is not accurate to say that a PC version is confirmed, cancelled, impossible, or scheduled based on the current sources. If you are waiting for PC, monitor Rockstar’s official platform page and Newswire announcements rather than relying on unofficial dates or requirements.
Do not estimate a required graphics card, processor, memory amount, storage space, operating-system version, or launcher from GTA V or from another Rockstar game. Those specifications would be for a different title and could be misleading. Until Rockstar publishes PC requirements, a PC buyer cannot make a reliable GTA VI hardware checklist from official information.
Which console should you buy?
If you already own a supported console
If you own a PS5, Xbox Series X, or Xbox Series S, you already have an officially listed GTA VI platform. Choose the version that matches your existing ecosystem unless Rockstar later announces a material difference that matters to you. Buying another console solely to chase an unverified frame-rate or resolution advantage is not supported by the current evidence.
If you own an older PlayStation or Xbox
The current announcements name PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, not PlayStation 4, Xbox One, or earlier hardware. Rockstar’s platform pages therefore do not establish compatibility with those older generations. Do not buy an older console expecting GTA VI to run on it. A move to one of the listed current-generation platforms is the documented path.

If you prefer PlayStation
Choose PS5 if you want the platform Rockstar specifically labels “Plays Best On PlayStation 5,” or if your games, saves, friends, and accessories are already centered on PlayStation. The label is an official preference statement; it is not a published numerical advantage.

If you prefer Xbox
Choose the Xbox model that fits your existing Xbox setup, knowing that both Series X and Series S are officially listed. Rockstar has not released a GTA VI-specific comparison that would justify declaring one Xbox model superior for this game.
If you are waiting for PC
Waiting is the only way to avoid buying a console when PC is your preferred platform, because Rockstar has not announced PC availability in the current materials. There is no official date to plan around, so treat any claimed PC launch window as unconfirmed unless Rockstar publishes it.

Current release date
Rockstar currently lists November 19, 2026 as the release date. The date appears on the official GTA VI page and in Rockstar’s June 2026 pre-order announcement. Rockstar previously announced the same date in its November 6, 2025 Newswire post, which states: “Grand Theft Auto VI will now release on Thursday, November 19, 2026.” Because schedules can change, check the official page close to launch. The relevant announcements are Rockstar’s June 24, 2026 pre-order announcement and the November 6, 2025 release-date announcement.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStandard and Ultimate editions
Rockstar’s support page lists Standard Edition and Ultimate Edition. It describes Standard Edition as including the game. For the physical version, Rockstar says the package contains a download code usable for a digital download. The cited materials do not establish console prices, regional pricing, upgrade fees, or the contents of every Ultimate Edition benefit, so confirm those details on the store page for your region before ordering.
Single-player scope
In its June 24, 2026 pre-order announcement, Rockstar describes GTA VI as a single-player experience coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The platform announcement does not provide a separate online-mode requirement or a required subscription. Do not add one to your buying checklist without a later official statement.
What the official information does not establish
- No GTA VI-specific resolution or frame-rate figures for PS5, Series X, or Series S.
- No measured PS5-versus-Xbox performance result.
- No technical comparison between Series X and Series S for this game.
- No PC system requirements, PC release date, or confirmation that a PC edition will be produced.
- No required storage capacity, television specification, console revision, controller, headset, or other accessory.
- No console prices or universally applicable regional pricing.
These omissions matter because they limit what you can responsibly use to justify an upgrade. The platform list answers “which hardware family is supported,” but it does not yet answer every technical question about how the game will run on each model.
A practical buying checklist
- Check what you own: PS5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S are the currently announced consoles.
- Reject older-generation assumptions: PS4 and Xbox One are not listed in Rockstar’s current GTA VI platform information.
- Decide whether PC is essential: no PC edition or date has been announced in the official materials checked.
- Use Rockstar’s wording carefully: PS5 is labeled “Plays Best,” but no measured advantage is published.
- Verify the date before ordering: Rockstar currently lists November 19, 2026, and release schedules can change.
- Check your regional store listing: edition contents, physical packaging, download-code details, and prices can vary by market.
The Bottom Line
For the currently announced launch, buy or use a PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, or Xbox Series S. Rockstar highlights PS5 as “Plays Best,” but provides no numerical comparison; Xbox Series X|S is officially supported as well. PC availability and requirements remain unannounced, so do not buy hardware based on unofficial PC claims.
