What do you mean by changing the colors on your Lenovo laptop? Windows interface colors, the screen’s warm or cool tone, keyboard illumination, and the laptop’s outside shell are separate things with different limits. Choose the result you want first: use Windows Personalization for menus and windows, Lenovo Vantage for supported display color temperature and some keyboard controls, the exact model specification for RGB capability, and a model-matched skin or decal for the exterior.
This guide separates those controls so you do not waste time looking for an RGB picker that your panel or keyboard does not support.
Choose the color change you actually want
Lenovo does not have one master color setting. A software change can affect the Windows interface without changing the LCD image, and a screen-temperature adjustment cannot recolor the keyboard or case.

Change Windows interface colors
For the Windows 10 workflow documented by Lenovo Support in How to set colors under Personalization in Windows 10 (published January 30, 2024; modified October 6, 2026), open Start > Settings > Personalization > Colors. These settings change the appearance of Windows surfaces and supported apps, not the physical display panel.

- Open Start, select Settings, then open Personalization.
- Select Colors.
- Under the mode selector, choose Light, Dark or Custom.
- Use Custom when Windows and apps should use different modes. It lets you select the Windows default mode separately from the default app mode.
- Choose an accent color. Depending on the selected mode and available switches, the accent can appear on surfaces such as Start, the taskbar, Action Center, title bars and window borders.
- Turn Transparency effects on or off if you want translucent elements or a more solid appearance.
What the accent color does—and does not do
The accent is a theme color for supported interface surfaces. It does not change the color temperature of photographs, games or video, and it cannot turn a non-RGB keyboard into a multicolor one. Some surface checkboxes appear or disappear with the selected Light, Dark or Custom mode, so the available choices may not look identical in every mode.
Windows-version caveat
Lenovo’s cited procedure is specifically for Windows 10. Later Windows releases retain the same Personalization concept, but labels and layout can move after feature updates. If a label differs, search Settings for Colors or open Personalization and select the color page rather than assuming every Windows version has the same screen.
If the color does not appear everywhere
- Switch between Light, Dark and Custom; some title-bar and taskbar controls are mode-dependent.
- Check the individual accent-surface toggles instead of assuming the accent applies to every surface.
- Remember that an app can ignore Windows accent colors and use its own theme.
- If the screen itself looks warmer or cooler, use the display section below; changing the Windows accent cannot correct that.
Adjust the screen’s color tone with Lenovo Vantage
If by “screen color” you mean a warmer night-reading appearance or a cooler white point, Lenovo documents an Eye Care Mode control in Lenovo Vantage for supported ideapad and ThinkPad notebooks. Lenovo Support’s procedure is titled Adjust the color tone of the notebook LCD display, using Eye Care Mode and Lenovo Vantage – Windows – ideapad, ThinkPad (published July 20, 2018; modified May 9, 2025).

- Install or open Lenovo Vantage.
- Open My Device Settings.
- Select Display & Camera.
- Open Display Color temperature.
- Move the available control toward a warmer or cooler setting, or enable the offered Eye Care option.
The exact slider or switch can vary with the notebook, Vantage release and graphics driver. The setting changes the displayed color temperature through software; it does not replace the LCD, add physical color filters, or promise colorimetric calibration for photography and print work.
Requirements Lenovo lists
- Windows 10 version 1703 or later.
- Lenovo Vantage.
- An up-to-date Lenovo System Interface Foundation driver.
Those are the requirements in Lenovo’s support instructions for the covered ideapad and ThinkPad systems. A different Lenovo family, Windows edition or driver package may expose a different menu or no menu at all.

When Display Color temperature is missing
- Run Windows Update and install Lenovo-recommended driver updates, including Lenovo System Interface Foundation when offered for your model.
- Update Lenovo Vantage from its official Windows distribution, then restart it.
- Check the exact model’s support page for a compatible graphics and display-driver package.
- Reopen My Device Settings > Display & Camera. If the control is still absent, the model or current software combination may not support that Vantage feature.
Do not confuse this setting with Windows’ own night-light feature or with an RGB control panel. All three can alter perceived color, but they operate independently and may stack, making the image unexpectedly yellow or dim.
Check and change the built-in keyboard lighting
The question “How do I change my Lenovo keyboard color?” has two parts: does the keyboard have a backlight, and is that backlight single-color or RGB? Lenovo’s support guidance for covered ideapad and ThinkPad models says to look for a backlight symbol on the Esc or Space key. The symbol indicates backlight hardware in the troubleshooting context; its presence does not prove that the keys support user-selected colors.
Identify the keyboard option before changing software
- Inspect Esc and Space for the backlight icon Lenovo describes.
- Check the original configuration or the exact model’s specification for “backlit,” “white backlit” or “RGB” wording.
- Use the model number, not only a family name such as ThinkPad, ideapad or Legion. One chassis family can be sold with multiple keyboard options.
- If there is no backlight icon and the specification does not list a backlit keyboard, software cannot add illumination to the built-in keys.
Use the keyboard shortcut when available
Lenovo’s keyboard documentation describes a backlight shortcut, but the key combination depends on the keyboard. Look for the illuminated-key symbol on the function row or Space bar and use the combination shown for your exact model. Repeated presses commonly cycle through the states provided by that keyboard, such as off and one or more brightness levels; do not assume the same shortcut works across every Lenovo series.
Use Lenovo Vantage controls
For models that expose keyboard settings in Vantage, Lenovo’s support path is Device or Device Settings > Input & Accessories. Open that page and select the keyboard-lighting control offered for your hardware. A single-color keyboard may expose only on/off or brightness. An RGB keyboard may expose zones, effects or colors, but only when Lenovo supplied the required firmware and software for that model.
Why a backlit keyboard may have no color picker
Backlighting describes illumination, not color programmability. Many keyboards use one fixed white color. Others provide a few factory effects, while RGB models can offer selectable colors. Vantage cannot create RGB capability in a keyboard whose LEDs and controller are single-color.

Legion Pro 5 16IRX9: model-specific RGB recovery
Lenovo has a separate support article for Legion Pro 5 16IRX9 systems where RGB lighting settings are missing from Vantage. The article, published October 22, 2024 and modified February 19, 2026, lists all of the following prerequisites:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- The latest Lenovo Vantage.
- BIOS version 22 or later.
- Keyboard RGB firmware V02 or later.
For the covered Windows 11 configuration, Lenovo references BIOS package N0CN22WW and Legion 4zone RGB keyboard firmware. These identifiers are model-specific. Do not flash them onto another Legion or Lenovo model simply because the symptoms look similar.
- Confirm that the machine is the Legion Pro 5 16IRX9 and that its factory keyboard is the RGB option.
- Update Vantage through the supported Lenovo channel.
- Check the installed BIOS version and update to version 22 or later only with the package intended for this exact machine.
- Install keyboard RGB firmware V02 or later for the covered Windows 11 system.
- Restart Windows, open Vantage and check the keyboard or lighting page again.
If the controls remain absent after those prerequisites, verify the model identifier and keyboard option before repeating updates. A non-RGB keyboard, a different Legion generation or an incompatible firmware package requires a different support article.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Change the physical color of the laptop exterior
Lenovo’s cited support results explain software colors, display tone and keyboard lighting; they do not provide a procedure for recoloring a chassis. The practical reversible approach is a skin or decal made for the exact model.
How to choose a skin or decal safely
- Match the complete model designation and screen size, not merely the Lenovo family name.
- Compare photographs or templates for the lid, palm rest and any separate bottom pieces.
- Keep ventilation openings, speaker grilles, hinges, ports, labels and service panels clear.
- Check whether the material is intended for the surface finish and can be removed without leaving adhesive.
- Do not treat a listing as compatible unless its dimensions and cutouts match your exact configuration; no particular product fit is established here.
A decal changes the visible shell only. It does not recolor the Windows interface, LCD output or keyboard LEDs. Painting, dyeing or disassembling the chassis is outside Lenovo’s documented color controls and can introduce fit, heat-management or service problems, so obtain model-specific technical guidance before attempting a permanent modification.

Use an external keyboard when you need colored keys at a desk
An external RGB-backlit keyboard is the straightforward way to get selectable colored key lighting when the built-in keyboard is fixed-color or has no backlight. It changes the external peripheral only. The Lenovo laptop’s own keys keep their original hardware and lighting behavior, and the effect will not follow you when you use the notebook without that keyboard.
Choose this route when your priority is desktop lighting rather than portability. If you need color on the built-in keys, first verify that the exact Lenovo configuration includes RGB hardware and that its Vantage and firmware controls are available.
A compatibility checklist before you troubleshoot
- Write down the full model and machine type from the laptop’s label, original documentation or Lenovo’s installed support utility.
- Record the Windows edition and build, because Lenovo’s display-tone instructions specify Windows 10 version 1703 or later and the Legion RGB procedure is tied to a covered Windows 11 configuration.
- Determine which surface is wrong: interface, screen tone, keyboard or exterior.
- Check whether the hardware option exists: a color menu cannot add RGB LEDs, a backlight or a different LCD panel.
- Update only software and firmware packages listed for the exact model.
- After an update, restart Windows before judging whether a Vantage control has returned.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Likely reason | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Start and taskbar remain the old color | The selected mode does not expose the desired surface control, or the app ignores the accent. | Revisit Personalization > Colors, try Custom, and enable the available accent-surface options. |
| The screen is yellow but Windows accents are correct | Eye Care, night-light or another display filter is active. | Check Lenovo Vantage’s Display Color temperature and Windows display filters separately. |
| No Display Color temperature page in Vantage | Unsupported model, outdated Vantage, missing System Interface Foundation or incompatible driver. | Update the listed software for the exact model; absence after updating may mean the feature is not supported. |
| Keyboard shortcut does nothing | The keyboard may not be backlit, the wrong model shortcut is being used, or a required driver/control is missing. | Look for the Esc/Space icon, verify the keyboard specification and check Vantage’s Input & Accessories page. |
| Keyboard glows white but has no RGB choices | It is a fixed-color backlight. | Use its available brightness controls or an external RGB keyboard; software cannot add multicolor LEDs. |
| Legion Pro 5 16IRX9 has no RGB page | Vantage, BIOS or keyboard RGB firmware is below Lenovo’s listed prerequisites. | Install current Vantage, BIOS 22 or later and keyboard RGB firmware V02 or later for that exact model. |
| A skin covers a vent or hinge | The decal was not cut for the exact configuration. | Remove or reposition it and use a template that leaves vents, hinges, labels and service access open. |
What each method can realistically accomplish
Use Windows Personalization when the goal is a different visual theme while the computer is otherwise functioning normally. Use Vantage’s temperature control when whites look too blue or you want a warmer viewing mode, understanding that it is a viewing adjustment rather than color calibration. Use keyboard controls only after confirming the installed keyboard hardware; fixed-color backlighting and RGB lighting are different products. Use a model-matched skin for a reversible exterior change, and an external RGB keyboard when colored keys matter more than keeping the setup entirely portable.
Keeping those boundaries in mind prevents the most common mistake: changing one color layer and expecting every other layer of the Lenovo laptop to change with it.
