CO₂, temperature and relative-humidity readings are useful clues, not a complete indoor-air-quality (IAQ) score. CO₂ mainly indicates how exhaled air is accumulating relative to outdoor-air delivery. Temperature and humidity describe comfort and moisture conditions. None of the three detects every pollutant, proves that air is safe, or establishes infection risk by itself.

Use the readings to spot patterns, then investigate occupancy, ventilation, moisture sources, particles and gases. The most effective response combines source control, suitable outdoor-air ventilation and filtration when appropriate.

What each reading actually tells you

Reading Useful indication What it cannot establish
CO₂ How much exhaled air may be accumulating relative to outdoor-air exchange in an occupied space Overall IAQ, a specific ventilation rate, the presence of an infectious person, or infection safety
Temperature One part of thermal comfort and a condition that can affect some pollutant concentrations A universal comfort setting or the presence or absence of pollutants
Relative humidity Whether air is unusually dry or damp, with implications for condensation and moisture management A guarantee against mold, biological growth or other indoor pollutants

ASHRAE states that its IAQ standards do not use indoor CO₂ concentrations to determine acceptable IAQ because air quality is also affected by temperature, humidity, particulate matter and gaseous pollutants. A monitor can therefore support an investigation, but it cannot grade an entire room as “good” or “bad.”

How to interpret CO₂ readings

Why CO₂ rises indoors

People exhale CO₂. In a room with several occupants, concentration commonly rises when outdoor air is not being delivered and mixed quickly enough for the occupancy. A rising trend during a meeting, class or crowded evening can therefore prompt a check of ventilation and occupancy.

That interpretation is relative, not absolute. Occupant count, outdoor-air delivery, HVAC operation, door and window position, room mixing, sensor location, calibration and the time of measurement all affect the number. A reading taken during an empty room cannot be compared fairly with one taken during a full room unless you are deliberately studying that difference.

Is 1,000 ppm of CO₂ bad?

There is no universal CO₂ cutoff that makes every room healthy or unhealthy. CDC/NIOSH identifies below 800 parts per million (ppm) as one possible baseline target, while warning that a single target may not suit all space types and occupancies. Treat 800 ppm as a contextual reference for investigating ventilation, not a pass/fail health threshold.

The often-repeated 1,000-ppm rule is likewise not a universal health limit. A room that briefly reaches 1,000 ppm is not automatically dangerous, and a room below that number is not automatically free of particles, gases or infectious aerosols. Compare readings with a baseline collected under similar occupancy and airflow, and look at the pattern over time rather than one instant.

How to collect a useful CO₂ baseline

  1. Use a reliable, calibrated meter. Check the manufacturer’s calibration method, maintenance requirements, stated accuracy and measurement range. Calibration and sensor reliability matter as much as the displayed number.
  2. Place it in the occupied breathing zone. Keep it away from a supply vent, open window, door draft or other direct air current. Make-up air can make a sensor read artificially low. Do not place it immediately beside a person’s face, where exhaled breath can make it artificially high.
  3. Record normal conditions. Note occupancy, doors and windows, HVAC mode, fans and the time of day. A short log is more useful than an isolated reading.
  4. Repeat comparable observations. Compare a busy period with another busy period, and an empty-room baseline with another empty-room baseline. Keep placement consistent.
  5. Investigate persistent elevation. If CO₂ remains above your chosen contextual target during normal use, check outdoor-air delivery and HVAC operation. The meter identifies a pattern; it does not diagnose the mechanical cause.

Why CO₂ does not measure infection risk

CO₂ cannot identify who is infected, quantify the infectious particles a person generates or determine whether an HVAC system removes particles close to their source. More outdoor air can dilute contaminants, but a CO₂ value alone cannot establish that transmission is impossible or that a room is safe for every occupant.

EPA summarizes the limitation this way: “Carbon dioxide concentrations indoors can provide information about ventilation but need to be interpreted carefully.”

What temperature readings mean

Temperature is a comfort variable, not an IAQ score

Temperature describes one part of thermal comfort. How people feel also depends on relative humidity, air movement, activity level and clothing. The same thermostat setting can feel different in a still office, a drafty room or a workshop where occupants are active.

Temperature can interact with pollution. EPA lists it among the factors affecting IAQ and notes that high temperature and humidity can increase concentrations of some pollutants. That does not create one correct temperature for every person, building, season or activity; the available guidance does not support a universal setpoint.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to use a temperature reading

  • Compare rooms and times under similar occupancy instead of treating a single reading as a diagnosis.
  • Look for persistent hot or cold zones that may indicate air-distribution or comfort problems.
  • Interpret temperature together with humidity and air movement; changing temperature alone may not resolve discomfort.
  • When investigating pollutants, record temperature because it helps explain why concentrations or comfort changed.

What relative-humidity readings mean

Practical humidity ranges

Relative humidity (RH) indicates how close air is to saturation at its current temperature. It is useful for spotting dry conditions, dampness and condensation risk. EPA’s home IAQ advice recommends keeping humidity below 60%, ideally between 30% and 50%. A separate EPA school troubleshooting tool lists 30% to 60% as a recommended range in its specific temperature-and-humidity investigation context. These are practical recommendations for different settings, not universal legal or medical limits.

Context EPA guidance How to use it
Home IAQ advice Below 60%, ideally 30–50% RH Use as a moisture-management goal in a home
School troubleshooting tool 30–60% RH Use within that tool’s investigation context

Why high humidity deserves attention

Persistent dampness can support biological growth, and high temperature and humidity can increase concentrations of some pollutants. Look for leaks, wet materials, condensation and inadequate bathroom exhaust. A humidity number inside a recommended range does not prove that a room has no mold, particles or gases; it only describes one condition.

What to do about dry or damp air

  • Find and repair plumbing, roof or envelope leaks rather than treating the meter reading alone.
  • Use a bathroom fan that exhausts outdoors during and after showers where practical.
  • Control condensation on windows, cold walls and pipes.
  • Be cautious about adding outdoor air when outdoor pollution, pollen or extreme weather makes it unsuitable.
  • Recheck RH after the source or ventilation change, because a single correction may not address a persistent moisture load.

A step-by-step response to a concerning reading

  1. Confirm the circumstances. Was the room occupied normally? Were doors, windows, HVAC and ventilation in their usual states? An unusual event can produce an unusual number.
  2. Check the instrument. Review calibration guidance, battery or power status, maintenance history, accuracy information and placement. Move it out of direct supply air or window drafts.
  3. Look for a trend. Record readings at consistent times and occupancy levels. A repeated pattern is more informative than a single spike.
  4. Match the response to the variable. Elevated CO₂ points you toward outdoor-air delivery and room mixing; high RH points you toward moisture sources; temperature discomfort points you toward comfort and air-distribution conditions.
  5. Reduce sources. Stop or isolate activities that generate particles, vapors or moisture when feasible. Source control prevents emissions instead of trying to clean them after release.
  6. Ventilate when conditions permit. Increase suitable outdoor-air delivery, operate the intended exhaust system and verify that HVAC equipment is functioning. Do not automatically bring in outdoor air during smoke, heavy pollen, severe weather or other unsuitable conditions.
  7. Add filtration as support. Particle filtration or an in-room HEPA cleaner can provide an additional measure when a ventilation target cannot be reached. Filtration does not remove CO₂ and does not replace source control or suitable ventilation.
  8. Measure again. Repeat the observation under comparable conditions to see whether the intervention changed the pattern.

Choosing the right intervention

Approach Primary problem addressed Important limitation
Source control Pollution or moisture at its origin Does not correct unrelated sources elsewhere in the building
Outdoor-air ventilation Dilution of indoor pollutants when outdoor air is suitable Can bring in outdoor pollution, pollen or extreme conditions; requires functioning equipment and adequate mixing
Filtration or air cleaning Some airborne particles Does not remove CO₂, solve a moisture source or prove infection safety

Use all three according to the problem. A CO₂ monitor can reveal a ventilation pattern, but it cannot tell you which pollutant is present. A particle cleaner can reduce some airborne particles while CO₂ remains high. Fixing a leak can lower moisture risk without changing a crowded room’s CO₂.

Common interpretation mistakes

“The CO₂ number is low, so every pollutant must be low.”

CO₂ mainly reflects exhaled air and ventilation conditions. It does not detect every gas, particle, moisture problem or emission source. A low reading can coexist with pollutants generated by cleaning products, combustion, building materials or outdoor air.

“The humidity is in range, so there cannot be mold.”

RH is a room-air measurement. Localized leaks, wet materials, cold surfaces and hidden cavities can remain damp even when the sensor displays a recommended room range.

“Opening a window always improves IAQ.”

Outdoor air is not automatically cleaner or more comfortable. Smoke, pollen, traffic pollution, high humidity, cold, heat or storms may make open-window ventilation unsuitable. Check outdoor conditions and use the building’s intended ventilation and filtration systems when appropriate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“A HEPA cleaner fixes high CO₂.”

HEPA filtration targets airborne particles. It does not remove the CO₂ generated by occupants. If CO₂ is persistently elevated, investigate outdoor-air delivery and occupancy separately.

Why context matters for indoor measurements

EPA says people spend 90 percent of their time indoors on average, which makes practical monitoring worthwhile, but a monitor still reports only the conditions at its location and time. Room mixing, occupancy and equipment operation can change within minutes. Treat readings as evidence for a focused question—such as whether a meeting room is adequately ventilated during use—not as a certification of the whole building.

For a defensible comparison, document the room, sensor position, occupancy, ventilation state, doors and windows, temperature, RH and time. Keep those conditions comparable when testing a change. If the pattern remains unexplained, the measurements may need a building-specific ventilation or moisture assessment rather than another consumer sensor.
