Short answer: a Claude skill is a saved, reusable procedure that Claude can load when relevant or that you invoke by name. A prompt is the instruction for the task you are asking for right now. A Claude.ai Project is a persistent workspace containing related chats, shared knowledge and project-level instructions. Skills package methods; prompts steer an interaction; Projects preserve context for ongoing work. They overlap, but they are not interchangeable, and their behavior depends on whether you are using Claude Code or claude.ai.
What a Claude skill is
Anthropic describes Claude Code skills as an extension mechanism: “Skills extend what Claude can do.” A skill is a named package of instructions, normally centered on a SKILL.md file. The file contains Markdown instructions and YAML frontmatter. The frontmatter can describe when the skill is useful and can include optional controls for invocation; the body tells Claude how to carry out the procedure. Supporting files, such as reference material, templates or scripts, are optional.
The important distinction is packaging. Instead of rewriting the same checklist in every conversation, you save the checklist once. Claude Code can decide to load the skill when its description matches the task, and you can invoke it directly by the skill’s name. Anthropic says the main body loads only when the skill is used, so a large procedure or reference set does not occupy the active instructions in every session.

What belongs in a skill
- Trigger information: a name and description that help Claude or you recognize the relevant workflow.
- Procedure: ordered instructions, checks, decision rules and expected outputs in
SKILL.md. - Optional resources: templates, examples, schemas or other supporting files that the procedure can consult.
- Invocation behavior: Claude Code-specific controls can determine whether people, automatic selection or both can invoke the skill.
A minimal conceptual file could look like this:
---
name: release-notes
description: Turn merged changes into a consistent release-notes draft.
---
Collect the merged changes, group them by user impact,
flag breaking changes, and produce the release-notes format
used by this project.
This example illustrates the shape, not a universal template. The exact frontmatter options and supported locations are defined by the Claude Code version and environment in which the skill is installed.
Where a Claude Code skill can live
Claude Code supports several scopes, including personal, project, nested, enterprise-managed, plugin and additional-directory locations. The location controls which sessions can discover the skill. Claude Code can also synchronize skills from a claude.ai account in eligible sessions. That does not mean a skill saved in one place automatically appears in every Claude product, account or conversation; surface, account configuration and settings matter.
Claude Code follows the Agent Skills open standard while adding Claude Code-specific capabilities such as invocation controls, subagent execution and dynamic context injection. Older custom-command files continue to work, but new custom commands have been merged into the skills model. If documentation or a team guide refers to custom commands, check whether the current Claude Code release now expects the same content to be represented as a skill.
What a prompt is
A prompt is the immediate instruction or request you give Claude. It can be a short question (“Summarize this message”) or a detailed specification containing context, constraints, examples and an output format. Anthropic’s prompting guidance recommends being specific, supplying the information Claude needs, breaking complex work into steps and using examples or XML tags when they make the structure clearer.
Prompts are naturally transient. They steer the current request unless you copy them into another conversation, save them in a document or turn their repeatable method into a skill. A prompt does not, by itself, create a named slash-command-like entry, attach supporting files, or give Claude a description it can use for automatic skill selection.

Why prompts and skills can feel similar
A skill is made of instruction content, so it is reasonable to say that a skill contains a reusable prompt or procedure. The practical difference is persistence and packaging:
- A prompt tells Claude what to do now.
- A skill stores a method for later invocation or relevant automatic loading.
- A prompt normally travels with one interaction; a skill can be maintained as a shared artifact with its own supporting files and scope.
Use a prompt when the task is unique, when you are still experimenting with wording, or when the instruction depends on details that will not recur. Save a skill when the same workflow appears repeatedly and consistency matters more than rewriting instructions each time.

What a Claude.ai Project is
A Claude.ai Project is a self-contained workspace for related work. It has separate chat histories, a project knowledge base and project instructions. You can add files or text to the knowledge base, then use that material across chats in the Project. Project instructions guide Claude’s behavior for chats in that workspace.
Separate chat histories are an important boundary: information in one chat is not automatically carried into another chat merely because both chats are inside the same Project. To make information available across the Project, add it to Project knowledge or restate it in the relevant conversation.
Project availability and collaboration
Anthropic’s help documentation describes Projects as available on paid Claude plans. For Claude for Work Team and Enterprise plans, organization sharing can include “Can use” and “Can edit” permissions. Plan names, sharing controls and eligibility can change, so the controls shown in your account are the authority for your workspace.

Anthropic also describes retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) for Projects. When a Project approaches its normal context limits, RAG can expand the amount of Project knowledge Claude can work with; Anthropic has described capacity expansion of up to 10x. That figure and the feature’s availability are plan- and implementation-dependent, so treat it as a documented capability rather than a guarantee for every account or every file set.
What Project instructions are not
Project instructions are durable guidance for chats in that one workspace. They are not a universal skill available to unrelated Claude Code sessions. Conversely, a Claude Code skill is a reusable procedure that can be available outside a single Project, depending on where it is saved and which product surface supports it. A Project is primarily a context container; a skill is primarily a method.
Prompt vs. skill vs. Project at a glance
| Compare by | Prompt | Skill | Project |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main job | State the current task or correction | Package a reusable procedure or reference workflow | Hold shared context for related chats |
| Persistence | Current request unless saved elsewhere | Saved in a supported skill location | Persists as a workspace with knowledge and instructions |
| How Claude receives it | Included directly in the interaction | Loaded when relevant or explicitly invoked in Claude Code | Project knowledge and instructions apply within Project chats |
| Best fit | One-off direction, clarification or experiment | Repeated checklist, workflow or task pattern | Ongoing work needing common material and project-specific rules |
| Typical scope | One request or conversation | Scope determined by its location, settings and product surface | Chats inside that Project |
| Main caveat | It does not automatically become reusable infrastructure | Loading and syncing behavior differs across Claude surfaces | Chat context does not automatically flow between chats |
This is a practical synthesis of Anthropic’s product descriptions, not a promise that every account exposes identical controls.
How the three pieces work together
They are often complementary rather than competing choices. Imagine a product team preparing a release:
- Project: create a Project containing the product brief, terminology, approved screenshots and prior release notes. Add project instructions that define the audience and tone.
- Skill: maintain a release-notes skill that explains how to classify changes, identify breaking changes and format the final draft. The skill can point to a template or supporting reference file.
- Prompt: in a particular chat, ask Claude to apply the release-notes procedure to a specific set of merged changes, and add any one-time constraints such as “write only the mobile section.”
The Project supplies durable background, the skill supplies the repeatable method and the prompt supplies the immediate assignment. If you only need a quick summary of one document, a prompt is enough. If you need the same review method across many repositories, a skill is the better investment. If several conversations must use the same source material, a Project provides the shared home.

When to choose a prompt
Use a prompt for a one-off task
Choose a prompt when the request is unlikely to recur, when the inputs change substantially each time, or when you are exploring what instructions produce a useful result. A prompt is also the right place for a final, situational constraint: a deadline, a specific audience, a temporary word limit or a one-time exception to your normal process.
Make the prompt self-contained
Include the relevant source text or file, define the desired output, identify constraints and show an example if formatting matters. Break a complicated request into explicit stages. If Claude needs a fact that is not in the conversation or an available workspace, state where it should obtain that fact rather than assuming it can see another chat.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to create a skill
Look for repetition and risk
A skill is justified when people repeatedly perform the same sequence, when omissions are costly, or when different operators need a consistent result. Examples include a code-review checklist, a data-cleaning procedure, a documentation format or a release-readiness audit. The more stable the method and the more often it is used, the more value a maintained skill provides.
Keep the procedure separate from changing facts
Put stable decisions and steps in SKILL.md. Put large or frequently updated material in supporting files or a Project knowledge base where appropriate. This keeps the skill focused and reduces the chance that a long, stale reference section silently governs every run.
Define failure handling
A useful skill says what to do when required input is missing, when two sources conflict, or when a check fails. It should specify the expected output and any conditions under which Claude must stop and ask for clarification. Without those rules, a saved skill can make an inconsistent process repeatable rather than making it reliable.

When to create a Project
Use a Project for shared background
Create a Project when multiple chats concern the same client, product, course, research collection or software initiative. Add the source files and terminology once, then refer to them across the Project’s chats. Use project instructions for durable preferences such as audience, style, definitions or review policy.
Do not assume hidden context
Because chat histories are separate, record any decision that must survive across conversations in Project knowledge or in the instructions. A conclusion that exists only in yesterday’s chat is not a dependable project-wide rule.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Calling every saved prompt a skill: a text snippet is reusable, but a Claude Code skill also has a supported location, description and loading or invocation behavior.
- Expecting cross-product portability: Claude Code skills, claude.ai Skills and Claude.ai Projects are related features, not one identical storage and loading system. Verify the surface and account conditions.
- Putting project facts in a global procedure: a skill should not quietly embed assumptions that apply only to one client or repository. Keep local facts in the Project or its supporting files.
- Assuming automatic selection is infallible: a description helps Claude decide when to load a skill, but an explicit invocation is safer when the workflow is mandatory.
- Ignoring maintenance: review a skill when tools, file formats, policies or team conventions change. A stale procedure can produce confidently formatted but obsolete work.
- Overloading Project instructions: keep instructions focused on behavior that should apply to every chat. Put a specialized, step-by-step operation in a skill instead.
A practical decision rule
Ask three questions before choosing where an instruction belongs:
- Is this only for the current request? Write a prompt.
- Will the same method be used repeatedly? Package it as a skill, with a clear description, procedure and failure conditions.
- Do several conversations need the same files, history-independent knowledge or project rules? Put that shared context in a Project.
In real work, the answer can be all three: a Project for the material, a skill for the method and a prompt for today’s exact assignment. The key is to keep scope explicit so that temporary directions do not become permanent rules and project-specific knowledge does not leak into unrelated work.
What to verify before relying on a feature
Claude’s product surfaces and plans evolve. Before standardizing a team workflow, check the current Claude Code documentation and the controls visible in your account for:
- which skill locations your installation can read;
- whether account-synced skills are enabled for your session;
- how automatic loading and direct invocation are configured;
- whether your Claude plan supports Projects, sharing or RAG;
- which coworkers can use or edit a shared Project; and
- how the current release handles older custom-command files.
These checks matter because a procedure can be perfectly written yet unavailable in the session where someone expects to use it.
