Chrome’s Android cache stores reusable page content, while cookies and site data preserve information that websites use for sign-ins, preferences and web-app storage. Clearing cached images and files normally leaves accounts and settings alone but makes some pages download content again. Clearing cookies and site data is more disruptive: affected sites can lose preferences and ask you to sign in again, although clearing them does not by itself sign you out of your Google Account.
You can remove either category from Chrome’s built-in Delete browsing data screen, choose a time range, or delete data for one site only. The safest choice depends on whether you are fixing a loading problem, resetting one website, freeing local storage or removing a broader record such as browsing history.
What Chrome stores on an Android phone or tablet
Chrome keeps several kinds of local information, and the labels on the deletion screen refer to different things. The most important distinction is between reusable page files and state that a website uses to remember you.

Cookies and site data are broader than the cache. A website can use them to recognize a browser, remember a choice or store data for a browser-based application. Deleting the cache does not automatically delete those records.
What happens when you clear each category

Clearing cookies while you are signed in to Chrome does not itself sign you out of the Google Account. Google says you remain signed in on Google websites such as google.com and youtube.com, although an individual non-Google site can still require its own login after its cookies are deleted. Do not treat cookie deletion as a way to erase Google Search history or other activity saved to the account; those records are managed separately.

- Open Chrome on the Android phone or tablet.
- Tap the More button (the three-dot menu).
- Choose Delete browsing data.
- Choose the duration you want to affect.
- Tap More options if the categories are not already visible.
- Select only the data types you intend to remove, such as Cached images and files or Cookies and site data.
- Review the selection, then confirm the deletion.
For cookie and site-data deletion, Chrome documents these time ranges: Last 15 minutes, Last hour, Last 24 hours, Last 7 days, Last 4 weeks and All time. A short range is useful when a recent change caused trouble; All time is a much broader reset. If your Chrome build presents different labels, use the closest duration shown on that device rather than assuming that a button with a similar name has the same scope.
The deletion screen can contain categories beyond cache and cookies. Read each checkbox before confirming: selecting browsing history, passwords, Autofill or site settings changes a different part of Chrome’s behavior.
Delete data for one website instead of every site
If one site is failing, deleting its local state avoids resetting unrelated websites. Chrome’s Android cookie instructions describe this procedure:

- Open the affected website in Chrome.
- Tap the page-information control near the address bar.
- Choose Cookies and site data.
- Find the stored data for that site and tap its delete control.
- Reload the page and test it again.
The control may appear with slightly different visual styling across Chrome versions, but it is the information control associated with the current page. The per-site process is documented in Chrome’s Android cookie management help. Because this removes only the selected site’s records, other sites keep their cookies, preferences and sessions.

A page is blank, broken or showing old formatting
Start with Cached images and files for a limited time range. Chrome can fetch the page resources again, which may resolve a stale or incomplete rendering problem. Expect the first reload to use more network data and potentially take longer. Clearing cache can help loading or formatting issues, but it is not a guarantee that the site itself is working correctly.
The site remembers the wrong account or preference
Clear Cookies and site data for that site, preferably with the per-site control. This resets the state that the site stored in Chrome. Have the site’s login method available because a new sign-in or a re-selection of preferences may be required.

Only one web app is malfunctioning
Use the single-site procedure first. Web applications can keep substantial information in Indexed Database, Web Storage or other HTML5 storage even when a page’s visible files look normal. Removing that site data gives the app a clean local state without deleting every site’s data.
You want to reclaim local storage
Clearing cached files removes locally saved page resources. The amount recovered varies by device and browsing history; Google’s guidance does not promise a particular number of megabytes or a specific speed increase. If you also select cookies and site data, the cleanup is broader and can affect sessions and web-app information.
You want to remove a record of websites you visited
Select Browsing history, not just cache. History deletion removes visited URLs, related New Tab shortcuts and address-bar predictions, and it may close open tabs. When Chrome history sync is on, deletion can propagate to signed-in devices that have history sync enabled. The details are in Chrome’s Android history help.

What clearing cache and site data does not remove
- Google Account activity: Google searches and other activity saved to the account are not deleted by Chrome’s local browsing-data list.
- Saved passwords: They remain unless you specifically select the password category.
- Autofill information: Form entries are a separate category. Cards and addresses saved to a Google Account are not removed merely because local Autofill data is cleared.
- Site permissions and settings: Camera, microphone, location and other permissions are separate selections.
- Every device automatically: Cache and cookie deletion is local to the Chrome data you select. Synced history is different: deleting synced history can affect other signed-in devices with history sync enabled.
Google warns that when you delete data stored in the Google Account from Android, that account data is removed from all devices signed in to the account. That warning concerns account-saved activity, not a blanket claim that every local Chrome cache or cookie on every device is erased.
Cookies, Google sign-in and website sessions
A common concern is whether clearing cookies will log you out of Google everywhere. Clearing Chrome cookies does not itself sign you out of the Google Account, and Google’s Android guidance says you remain signed in on Google sites such as google.com and youtube.com. However, cookies belong to individual sites. A non-Google service, a work portal or a shopping site can lose its session cookie and present its login screen again.
Some sites also use a combination of cookies and other site storage. If a site still behaves as though it remembers an old setting after cookie deletion, use its own account controls or the per-site data screen to remove the remaining local state. Conversely, if you only clear the cache, a site’s remembered login and preferences generally remain because those are not the cached page files.

- Choose a short duration before trying All time.
- Use More options to verify that only the intended categories are checked.
- For a single-site fault, use the page-information path instead of deleting all sites’ data.
- Do not select Browsing history if you only need to refresh page files.
- Do not select Passwords, Autofill or Site settings unless you specifically want those records removed.
- After deleting cookies for a site, keep its password, passkey or other sign-in method available.
A practical order for troubleshooting
- Reload the page normally and check whether the problem affects one site or many.
- If the problem looks like stale formatting or missing page resources, clear that site’s cached images and files.
- If the site still has an incorrect session or preference, delete that site’s cookies and site data.
- Only then consider a broader time range or additional categories, after reviewing the consequences.
- If the issue concerns synced history or Google Account activity, use the appropriate Google or Chrome history controls rather than treating cache deletion as an account cleanup.
This sequence starts with the least disruptive reset and escalates only when the symptom points to stored site state. It preserves unrelated website sessions and avoids deleting passwords, Autofill entries or history by accident.
Bottom line
Chrome cache is disposable page content; cookies and site data are the information websites use to remember browser state. Clearing cache mainly forces content to download again. Clearing cookies and site data can reset affected websites and require fresh sign-ins, but it does not by itself sign you out of your Google Account. Select the narrowest category, duration and site scope that match the problem.
