Fossil teeth can preserve chemical clues about an animal’s diet, the water it used, the vegetation around it, and sometimes the geology it moved through. They do not function as direct thermometers or geographic trackers: each value is filtered through feeding behavior, physiology, tissue formation, local environmental baselines, and chemical alteration after burial.

The most defensible interpretation is therefore conditional. A tooth may show that an animal’s chemistry is consistent with a broad environmental setting, dietary pattern, or change in location. A single measurement rarely identifies an exact temperature, rainfall total, birthplace, or travel route.

What a fossil tooth actually records

Tooth chemistry is a proxy record. It links an environmental input to a mineralized tissue through a chain of biological and geological processes:

  1. Water, plants, soil, and bedrock acquire chemical and isotopic compositions.
  2. An animal encounters those inputs through drinking, eating, and moving through the landscape.
  3. Its metabolism, physiology, feeding behavior, and seasonality modify the signal.
  4. Enamel, dentin, or other tissues mineralize and retain part of that history.
  5. Burial can preserve the original composition, alter it, or add chemical material from groundwater and sediment.

That chain explains both the value and the limits of teeth. The measured composition is not an untouched sample of the surrounding air, rainfall, or soil. It is an environmental signal filtered by an animal and then potentially modified underground.

Stevens, Pederzani, Britton, and Wexler’s 2025 review in Quaternary Science Reviews summarizes the principle this way: “These skeletal remains, composed of both organic and inorganic materials, preserve isotopic signals that reflect an organism’s dietary habits and other behaviours, as well as environmental, and climatic conditions during an animal’s lifetime.” The phrase “during an animal’s lifetime” is important: a result belongs to the tissue and interval that formed, not automatically to the animal’s entire life or to every year represented by the fossil site.

Which chemical systems answer which questions?

Different isotope systems and elemental measurements record different parts of the environment. They should not be treated as interchangeable climate indicators.

System or measurement What it can help investigate Essential qualification
Carbon isotopes Diet and the vegetation structure represented in an animal’s food web Interpretation depends on the local ecosystem and the animal’s feeding ecology; a value does not by itself identify a named plant or food.
Oxygen isotopes The isotopic composition of body water and environmental water used by the animal Drinking behavior, physiology, seasonality, and local water patterns intervene between environmental water and tooth composition. A tooth oxygen value is not automatically a direct temperature reading.
Strontium isotope ratios Compatibility with geological settings and possible changes in location A useful result requires suitable geological and ecological baselines. A ratio may narrow possibilities without identifying one exact birthplace or route.
Nitrogen isotopes Dietary and ecological questions addressed in skeletal-isotope studies The meaning depends on species, food web, tissue, and comparison baseline; the isotope should not be assigned a universal interpretation.
Sulfur isotopes Environmental and dietary questions in the broader skeletal-archive toolkit Local geology, food sources, and alteration can affect the signal, so interpretation must be tied to context.
Hydrogen isotopes Water- and environmental-history questions in bones and teeth Physiology, water source, seasonality, and post-burial change can complicate the environmental link.
Zinc isotopes Biological and environmental information investigated in skeletal remains Results require species-specific ecological context and preservation assessment.
Trace elements and their isotopes Signals related to food, water, trophic position, place, and burial history Elements can be redistributed or introduced after burial; not every concentration is a clean environmental proxy.

Carbon: diet and vegetation, not a menu label

Carbon isotope variation in tooth enamel and other fossil materials can track differences in vegetation structure and the plants represented in a food web. Researchers compare the tooth signal with the animal’s feeding ecology and the ecosystem in which it lived. The same carbon pattern can have different implications in different habitats or for animals with different diets.

It is unsafe to convert one carbon value directly into “this animal ate plant X.” A defensible claim needs a local ecological baseline, knowledge of the species’ feeding behavior, and—where possible—independent evidence such as dental anatomy, microwear, associated fauna, or plant remains.

Oxygen: environmental water filtered through biology

Oxygen isotopes in tooth minerals can relate to the isotopic composition of water incorporated into the body. Environmental water varies with climatic and geographic processes, but the route from water to tooth includes what the animal drank, what water was present in food, how its body processed that water, and when the tissue formed.

The distinction matters because oxygen isotopes are used for direct paleothermometry in some archives, such as particular soil minerals or fish otoliths, under calibrated conditions. A tooth oxygen measurement is generally an indirect climate inference through environmental water, not a universal thermometer. Seasonal drinking, migration between water sources, and physiological differences can all change the result.

Strontium: geology and movement

Strontium isotope ratios can help test whether an animal’s tooth chemistry is compatible with a geological region. This makes strontium useful for investigating mobility, especially when teeth from different formation intervals or individuals are compared with mapped geological baselines.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The ratio does not carry a built-in location label. Several places may share compatible values, and local plants or water can blur the bedrock signal. A claim about movement should therefore state which baseline was used, how finely the tooth was sampled, and whether the observed difference is larger than expected local variation. Without that information, “the animal migrated from region A to region B” is stronger than the chemistry alone can support.

Other isotopes and trace elements

The 2025 synthesis covers nitrogen, sulfur, hydrogen, and zinc alongside carbon, oxygen, and strontium. These systems broaden the questions that can be asked about food webs, water, environmental conditions, and behavior, but they do not remove the need for biological and geological context.

Trace-element concentrations and isotope compositions can contain information about food, water, trophic position, and place. They can also record the chemistry of sediment or groundwater that interacted with the tooth after burial. An element’s presence in a fossil is therefore not proof that the animal’s living environment supplied it.

Why tissue and sampling interval change the answer

A tooth is not chemically uniform through time. Enamel generally does not remodel after it forms, while dentin and bone have different formation and remodeling histories. The tissue selected, the tooth position, and the point sampled determine which part of the animal’s history is represented.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Enamel

Enamel is often preferred for some isotope and elemental analyses because it is highly mineralized and can retain a formation signal better than remodeling tissues. It is not immune to diagenesis: burial fluids can still alter its composition, and preservation must be demonstrated rather than assumed.

Dentin and bone

Dentin and bone record different biological histories. Bone remodeling can blend signals from multiple periods, whereas a localized dentin or enamel sample may represent a narrower formation interval. Comparing a bulk bone value with a small enamel increment without accounting for this difference can produce a misleading “disagreement.”

Incremental sampling

Teeth form incrementally. In some species and sampling designs, sequential measurements can reveal seasonal or subannual variation. That resolution is not universal: it depends on the species, tooth, tissue, preservation, and spacing of samples. A bulk powder taken from a large area averages the interval represented by that area and cannot be described as a day-by-day or season-by-season record.

Every result should therefore state which tooth and tissue were used, where the sample came from, and what formation interval that location is expected to represent.

How scientists turn a chemical measurement into an environmental interpretation

A robust study follows a chain of decisions rather than jumping from a number to a climate label.

  1. Define the question. Is the goal to examine diet, vegetation, water use, geological compatibility, mobility, or change through time? The question determines the appropriate isotope or elemental system.
  2. Choose the tissue and sampling scale. Investigators decide between enamel, dentin, bone, or another archive and document whether sampling is bulk or incremental.
  3. Build a local baseline. Carbon requires ecological and feeding context; oxygen requires knowledge of environmental water; strontium requires geological and ecological reference values. A baseline makes a comparison possible.
  4. Measure the chemistry. The study records the isotope or element, the sampled tissue, tooth position, and analytical interval so that results can be compared with the right biological period.
  5. Test preservation. Fossil apatite may acquire or redistribute elements after burial. Enamel preference does not eliminate this risk, so altered material and the evidence used to judge preservation must be reported.
  6. Compare independent evidence. Geology, other fossils, ecology, anatomy, dental microwear, and multiple chemical systems can support or challenge the proposed interpretation.
  7. State the conclusion at the scale supported by the evidence. If several environments or behaviors fit the value, the conclusion should retain that range instead of selecting one without justification.

What a tooth can say about an ancient environment

Broad diet and vegetation setting

Carbon patterns can indicate that an animal fed within a food web associated with a particular broad vegetation structure, provided the local ecosystem and feeding behavior are understood. Differences among teeth or individuals may suggest dietary change, but the cause could be seasonal feeding, age, habitat use, or preservation. Carbon alone should not be turned into a precise plant list.

Water use and climatic setting

Oxygen can help compare animals or layers that experienced different water sources. A shift may be consistent with changing climate, elevation, seasonality, or geography, but behavior can produce the same pattern. An animal that changed drinking locations or obtained much of its water through food may not record the average precipitation of the surrounding landscape.

Geological compatibility and mobility

Strontium can test whether an individual’s chemistry matches one or more geological zones. Sequential samples or comparisons among teeth can strengthen a mobility inference when the baseline is well resolved. The result usually constrains compatible settings; it does not automatically recover a unique route, home range, or birthplace.

Food-web position and ecological relationships

Multiple isotope systems and trace elements can be combined to investigate an animal’s place in an ecosystem. Such interpretations are strongest when they are tested against modern ecosystems and experimental context. A chemical pattern that conflicts with anatomy or biomechanics is not necessarily an error, but it is a reason to examine the assumptions and seek additional evidence.

Why one value can support several explanations

The same tooth composition may be compatible with multiple combinations of conditions:

  • different water sources with similar isotopic compositions;
  • the same habitat used in different seasons;
  • different diets that produce overlapping chemical inputs;
  • species with different physiology or water-processing behavior;
  • migration between environments during tooth formation;
  • local geological variation not captured by a coarse baseline; or
  • chemical exchange after burial.

This is why a proxy result is not a direct sensor reading. Climate, diet, behavior, and geology can be confounded unless the study design separates them with suitable comparisons.

Preservation and diagenesis: the critical quality check

Diagenesis is chemical change after burial. Fossil apatite can exchange elements with groundwater or sediment, redistribute elements within a tooth, or acquire a composition that resembles a plausible living signal. A value can therefore look environmentally meaningful while partly reflecting burial conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Enamel is often selected over bone for this reason, but “enamel” is not synonymous with “unaltered.” A credible interpretation explains how preservation was evaluated, which regions or samples were retained, and how possible alteration affects confidence. If preservation cannot be established, the result should be presented as a tentative chemical observation rather than a precise reconstruction.

Why independent evidence matters

Stable isotopes and trace elements are most informative when combined with evidence that tests different parts of the causal chain.

  • Geology can establish whether a strontium value is compatible with a proposed region.
  • Ecology and associated fossils can show whether a proposed vegetation or food-web interpretation fits the community.
  • Dental microwear can provide an independent indication of feeding mechanics and texture.
  • Anatomy and biomechanics can support or challenge an inferred diet, while also reminding investigators that form and actual feeding behavior may diverge.
  • Multiple tissues or isotope systems can reveal whether a pattern is localized to one formation interval or appears across independent archives.

The hominin dietary literature emphasizes both the value of modern ecosystem and experimental context and the possibility that isotopic signals may conflict with morphology-based expectations. Such a conflict is a prompt for better testing, not permission to choose whichever line of evidence is more convenient.

How to read a strong or weak environmental claim

Question to ask What a well-supported study provides
What is being measured? The isotope or element and the biological or environmental process it is intended to represent
Which tissue and interval? Tooth identity, tissue type, sampling location, and whether the result is bulk or incremental
What is the baseline? Modern, geological, ecological, or comparative values appropriate to the species and site
Could burial have changed it? Preservation assessment and an explanation of how diagenesis was addressed
Could behavior explain it? Discussion of drinking, feeding, physiology, seasonality, and movement
Is there independent support? Agreement or an explicit conflict with geology, ecology, fossils, anatomy, microwear, or other chemistry
How narrow is the conclusion? A calibrated range or broad interpretation rather than an unsupported exact temperature, rainfall total, or location

A useful formulation is: “The tooth chemistry is consistent with [a broad interpretation] in this ecological and geological setting.” A more specific statement is justified only when the study supplies the matching calibration, baseline, preservation checks, and sampling resolution.

Bottom line for ancient-environment questions

Fossil teeth are valuable archives because they can preserve several kinds of environmental information in a durable tissue. Carbon can inform diet and vegetation structure; oxygen can connect tissue chemistry to environmental water; strontium can test geological compatibility and mobility; and other isotopes and trace elements can broaden ecological questions.

The evidence becomes misleading when a tooth value is treated as a direct thermometer, a complete lifetime biography, or a map coordinate. Tissue formation, sampling interval, species biology, local baselines, and post-burial alteration set the limits. The strongest conclusions combine chemistry with geology, ecology, other fossils, and independent dental or anatomical evidence, then report the broadest claim that all of those constraints genuinely support.
