Chemical gardens are inorganic structures that form when soluble metal salts meet alkaline sodium silicate solution. Reactions at the boundary create membranes; water flow, escaping fluid and fresh precipitation can then extend those membranes into hollow, branching tubes. They organize themselves without being alive.
What is a chemical garden?
A chemical garden, sometimes called a silica garden or silicate garden, is a precipitation structure produced when reactive solutions meet. The name describes its plant-like appearance, not its biology: it is not a plant, organism or evidence of life.
A 2016 review describes the familiar forms as centimeter-sized hollow tubes made from precipitated metal (hydr)oxides and typically amorphous silica. It reports tubes roughly 1 mm in diameter and several centimeters long; those are characteristic dimensions, not limits for every setup. Barge et al., Science Advances (2016)

Growth is a coupled process: interfacial chemistry creates a membrane, osmotic water movement can pressurize and rupture it, fluid escapes through an opening, and precipitation continues where that fluid contacts the surrounding solution. Buoyancy may carry escaping, salt-rich fluid upward, helping extend a hollow tube. The balance of reaction and fluid transport varies with the particular chemicals and setup.

- A seed dissolves. In the classic demonstration, a soluble multivalent metal-salt crystal is placed in alkaline sodium silicate solution, also known as water glass. The salt dissolves at its surface.
- A membrane forms. Dissolved ions react at the interface, producing a colloidal precipitate around the seed. This thin barrier separates fluids with different compositions.
- Water crosses the membrane. Osmotic flow can expand the barrier until it ruptures. The exact response depends on the reaction system.
- Fluid escapes and a tube extends. Salt-rich fluid flows through the breach. As it meets the surrounding solution, new precipitate forms along the interface; buoyancy can help carry the flow upward.
- Growth continues out of equilibrium. Repeated rupture and precipitation can produce branching or tube-like forms. Chemical gradients and diffusion may persist after visible macroscopic growth has stopped.
Experiments on iron-based gardens tracked composition and crystallization using synchrotron X-ray absorption and diffraction. In the systems studied, later chemical and structural evolution could continue for up to several days after visible growth; that timescale is specific to those experiments, not a general duration for all gardens. What are the structures made of?
Despite the name, a chemical garden is not necessarily pure silica. Its walls can combine metal (hydr)oxides with silica or silicate, and a silica-rich outer layer found in classic examples may be absent in some cases. The metal ions, counterions and solution conditions influence both composition and form. How are chemical gardens different from other precipitation patterns?
Several reaction systems can make striking patterns, but similar visual complexity does not mean they share the same structure or mechanism.

Why do researchers study chemical gardens?
Chemical gardens offer a way to investigate self-organization far from equilibrium: structures emerge from local reactions and fluid transport rather than from a biological growth program. Researchers also study their membranes and chemical gradients for possible relevance to materials science and engineering, and as a setting for questions about prebiotic chemistry. Results depend on the chemistry and on how the fluids are brought together. Studies of silica gardens show that metal-cation and counterion choice can affect tube formation and later evolution. For comparing reported experiments, useful variables include the salt ions, silicate concentration and pH, whether researchers use a seed crystal or controlled injection, the vessel geometry and fluid flow, the observed morphology, and the timescale over which it is measured. No single shape or duration should be treated as universal.
