Switching from Google, ChatGPT and WhatsApp is possible, but it is not a one-for-one swap. Google covers several jobs, AI assistants differ in both capabilities and data handling, and a messaging app is useful only when the people you contact can reach you there. “European” can mean based in an EU country or elsewhere in Europe, such as Switzerland or Norway; it does not guarantee that all processing, ownership or legal exposure is exclusively European.
Start by listing what you use Google for
Google is a collection of services, not a single product. Pick the functions you want to change before choosing alternatives. A European services directory lists options in several categories, but it is a catalog—not an independent comparison of quality or a guarantee that a listed service matches Google feature for feature.

These are starting points to investigate, not proven equivalents. The available comparison does not establish how they stack up against Google for search relevance, maps, document collaboration, photo management or migration tools. If one of those is central to your routine, assess that specific job rather than assuming a new search engine or browser replaces the wider Google stack.

- Choose one function first. Decide whether you want to replace search, email, storage or browsing. Keeping the scope narrow makes it easier to spot missing features.
- Check the workflows you rely on. For example, consider how you use search results, share files or work with documents. The directory does not establish that the listed services reproduce those workflows.
- Try the alternative alongside your current service. Compare it against your own everyday needs before moving important accounts or files. The evidence available here does not establish a particular migration process or tool.
Compare AI assistants on your own tasks and their data rules
A guide published by Proton identifies Lumo, based in Geneva, and Mistral Vibe, based in Paris, as general-purpose European assistant options. The guide describes different privacy and training arrangements; those are vendor-reported details, not independent audit findings. Product names, defaults and policies can change, so check the current service settings and terms before entering sensitive information.

The same guide mentions GreenPT and Qwant Chat IA as other options with different processing and data-handling caveats. Their inclusion does not establish that they will suit a particular task or have stronger privacy protections.
Use a fair comparison, not a leaderboard
No independent performance benchmark or hands-on test is established here, so there is no basis for ranking these assistants by quality. Instead, give each one the same familiar prompts and compare the results you care about. Include practical tasks such as writing, summarizing, web research and working with files if those matter to you.
- Judge the output: accuracy, usefulness, visibility of sources, speed and how much editing you need.
- Check the limits: free and paid tier restrictions and file-handling capabilities.
- Inspect the data rules: chat retention, training defaults, data location, encryption and whether another company processes prompts.
Do not treat a European base as proof that every prompt stays in Europe or is protected in the same way across products. Verify the policy and settings for the particular assistant and account tier you would use.
WhatsApp is harder to replace when your contacts stay put
A messenger can replace WhatsApp for a conversation only if the other participants also move, or if the services can interoperate. Installing a new app by yourself does not move a group chat or make your contacts reachable there.

Meta announced on 14 November 2025 that WhatsApp users in Europe would soon be able to opt in to third-party chats with BirdyChat and Haiket. The announcement described messages and media, including images, voice messages, videos and files. It said group chats would follow when partner services were ready. This was a planned rollout, not confirmation that the feature is available to every European user now. Check current WhatsApp documentation and your own app before relying on it.
The announcement names two services and describes an optional feature; it does not mean that every European messenger can connect to WhatsApp. The available evidence does not provide a current independent feature comparison of European messengers, so it cannot support a recommendation among Threema, Olvid, Element or other services.
Plan around the people you message
- List the individuals and groups you need to reach regularly.
- Ask which alternative they are willing to use, or whether an opt-in interoperability option is actually available to them.
- Move a conversation only after the participants know where to find it and can use the replacement.
What European origin does—and does not—tell you
European headquarters or branding can help identify where a service is based, but geography alone does not establish where every piece of data is processed, who owns the company or which laws may apply. The AI details above are examples of why policies need to be checked product by product rather than inferred from a company’s location.

There is also a regulatory change to watch. On 16 July 2026, the European Commission announced binding Digital Markets Act specification measures concerning third-party AI assistants’ access to Android features and third-party search engines’ access to Google Search data. The Commission framed the measures as intended to widen choice and improve competition. The announcement is not evidence that a particular alternative already matches Google or that a new capability is immediately available to every user.
Choose by function, task and contact—not by label alone
A practical switch is usually a series of decisions: identify which Google function you want to replace, test an AI assistant on repeatable tasks while checking its data rules, and choose a messaging route that your contacts can actually use. The options above provide places to start, but European origin by itself establishes neither equivalent features nor a blanket privacy guarantee.
