Installing a third-party Android launcher changes the app that handles your phone’s Home role. It controls the home screen, app drawer, and the way you start apps, while the apps themselves, their data, and Android’s underlying system remain in place. The exact result depends on the launcher, phone manufacturer, and Android version.
The short answer: your Home experience changes, not your installed apps
Android treats a launcher as the app that responds when you press the Home button or use the Home gesture. After you select a third-party launcher as the default Home app, that launcher supplies the visible home-screen experience: your pages, dock, app drawer, search surface, widgets, icons, folders, gestures, and related navigation features.
Your other applications are not replaced by the launcher. Android’s Home app finds activities that other apps advertise as launchable, then presents those activities in its app drawer or search interface. In Android’s documentation, this discovery uses the ACTION_MAIN action and CATEGORY_LAUNCHER category. The launcher is therefore a presentation and launch surface, not a substitute for every application it displays.
Changing launchers can still feel like a major change because the first screen you see, the way you find apps, and the shortcuts or gestures you use may all be different. Some Android features also expect the default Home app to support particular platform roles or permissions. Android 15’s Private Space is the clearest documented example.

What a launcher is responsible for
The Home role
Android identifies Home apps through the CATEGORY_HOME intent category. The system chooses one app to handle that role. When a different launcher becomes the preferred Home intent handler, Android sends Home actions to it instead of the manufacturer’s launcher.
This is a system role or intent-handler choice, not a complete replacement of Android’s interface. The status bar, Settings app, notification shade, lock screen, permissions system, and most system panels continue to come from Android or the phone maker.
The home-screen layout
The selected launcher normally owns the arrangement of home-screen pages, folders, shortcuts, dock icons, wallpaper presentation, and widget placement. A new launcher may start with a blank or sample layout rather than importing the old launcher’s arrangement. Whether it can restore the previous layout depends on its own import and backup features and on what the phone’s original launcher allows it to export.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The app drawer and search surface
The app drawer is the launcher’s catalog of launchable activities. It may offer alphabetical pages, categories, tabs, hidden-app controls, or search. These are organizational choices made by the launcher; they do not change which application packages are installed.
Search behavior is also launcher-specific. A launcher may search app names, shortcuts, contacts, settings, or web results, while another may restrict search to installed apps. Do not assume that a search box, app labels, or sorting method will behave exactly as they did before.
What does not change merely because you changed launchers
- Your installed applications remain installed unless you separately uninstall them.
- Application data, accounts, saved files, and permissions are not transferred to or replaced by the launcher simply because it became the Home app.
- The launcher does not become the owner of every app shown in its drawer; it invokes the launchable activities those apps expose.
- Android’s core settings, notification system, lock screen, and system update mechanism continue to be provided by the operating system or device software.
A launcher can provide shortcuts or widgets that open another app, but opening that app still hands control to the other app. Removing the third-party launcher later does not normally remove the applications it displayed.
Will changing launchers delete my apps or accounts?
No. Selecting a different Home app does not uninstall packages, sign you out of accounts, erase photos, or migrate app data into the launcher. The main change is which application receives the Home command and how it presents launchable activities. You can switch back to the original launcher and continue using the same applications.

What may be lost is convenience: the old launcher’s exact icon positions, folders, widgets, and custom shortcuts may not be reproduced automatically. Treat the layout as launcher-specific configuration rather than as part of the application data belonging to each app.
How to install and make a third-party launcher the default
Android’s exact labels differ between manufacturers and software versions, so treat the following as a general procedure rather than a universal menu path.
- Install the launcher. Obtain it from a source you trust and complete Android’s normal installation process.
- Open the launcher once. Many launchers show an onboarding screen explaining permissions, layout import, gestures, or backup options.
- Choose it as Home. The onboarding flow may offer a button such as Set as default, Use as default, or Make default launcher. Confirm the Home selection when Android displays the chooser.
- Use Android’s default-app settings if no prompt appears. In Settings, look for Apps, Default apps, and a setting named Home app, Home, or Launcher. Select the installed launcher there.
- Rebuild or import your layout. Add the widgets, shortcuts, folders, and pages you need. If the launcher offers an import tool, review the result rather than assuming every item transferred correctly.
- Test the Home action. Press the Home button or perform the Home gesture, open the app drawer, launch several applications, and verify any essential widgets or shortcuts.
If the phone keeps returning to its original launcher, check whether the new app was actually assigned the Home role. Some devices also reset defaults after an update, a work-profile policy change, or removal of the selected launcher.
What to record before you switch
Take a quick inventory before changing the default. Note the number of home pages, the widgets you depend on, folders containing work or finance apps, custom gestures, and any shortcut that opens a particular action inside another app. This makes it easier to tell whether something is genuinely missing or simply has not been recreated.

Also identify the manufacturer’s launcher by name in the Home-app setting. That gives you a known recovery path if the new interface is confusing or a feature you rely on does not work. Keep the original launcher installed until the replacement has passed your everyday tests.
What can vary between launchers and phones
The platform role is consistent, but the experience around it is not. The following capabilities must be checked for the specific launcher and device combination.
| Area | What may change | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Home-screen editing | Grid size, icon spacing, page loops, dock behavior, folder styles, and resize controls | Whether the controls match your phone’s display and preferred layout |
| App drawer | Paging, vertical scrolling, categories, hidden apps, sorting, and drawer gestures | How quickly you can locate frequently used apps |
| Search | Apps-only search, shortcuts, contacts, settings, or broader results | Which sources are searched and whether results can be disabled |
| Gestures | Swipe actions, double-tap commands, edge gestures, and navigation interactions | Compatibility with the phone’s navigation mode and manufacturer settings |
| Widgets | Placement, resizing, widget previews, and refresh behavior | Whether important widgets render and update correctly |
| Notifications | Badges, dots, counts, and notification-related shortcuts | Permission requirements and support for your device’s notification system |
| Backup and restore | Exported layouts, icon positions, folders, and settings | What is included, where backups are stored, and whether restoration is device-specific |
| Manufacturer integration | Special panels, foldable-screen behavior, stylus features, or proprietary widgets | Whether the launcher documents support for your phone model and Android version |
None of these features is guaranteed by the Home role itself. A launcher can be a valid Home app while offering a very different feature set from the phone maker’s launcher.
Widgets, shortcuts, and notification indicators
Widgets still come from their original applications, but the launcher determines the picker, grid, placement, and resize handles used to put them on the Home screen. A widget that worked on the manufacturer’s launcher may need to be added again. A shortcut may also appear in a different menu or lose a visual badge if the new launcher uses another notification-indicator system.

Open the app directly from Settings or the app drawer to separate an app problem from a launcher presentation problem. Check the launcher’s permissions and documented support when badges, widget refresh, or shortcut actions are essential to your routine.
Search and app discovery are separate decisions
Two launchers can expose exactly the same installed apps yet make them feel very different to find. One may use a continuously scrolling drawer, another may use pages or categories, and a third may put search at the center of the Home screen. Examine whether search includes only app labels or also shortcuts, contacts, settings, and other results, and whether those sources can be turned off.
Remember that a package can be installed without presenting a conventional launcher icon. Android’s documented discovery process looks for activities advertising ACTION_MAIN and CATEGORY_LAUNCHER. Such an app may require a different entry point, a widget, a Settings page, or an action inside another application rather than an ordinary drawer icon.
Android 15 and Private Space
Android 15 documents a specific requirement for launcher apps and Private Space. Apps inside Private Space become visible through the launcher only when the launcher has been assigned the default launcher role, identified by Android as ROLE_HOME, and handles the documented requirements.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchA launcher that declares ACCESS_HIDDEN_PROFILES must provide a separate container for the hidden profile and support hiding, showing, locking, and unlocking it. When the profile is locked, its applications must not be visible or discoverable through mechanisms such as launcher search.
This is a feature-specific rule, not proof that every third-party launcher supports Private Space. If Private Space matters to you, check the launcher’s Android 15 support statement and test the complete sequence: lock the space, confirm that its apps disappear from the drawer and search, unlock it, and confirm that they return only when expected.
Android’s LauncherApps API also has profile-visibility and hidden-profile restrictions. In practice, launcher behavior can depend on Android’s profile APIs, permissions, and the device’s work or managed-profile configuration.

Work profiles, managed profiles, and multiple users
The same principle applies beyond Private Space: a launcher can only present profiles and activities that Android makes visible to it under the relevant profile APIs and permissions. A work profile may therefore show a separate set of apps, pause them, or hide them according to device-management policy. If a work app disappears after switching launchers, verify the profile’s state and policy before reinstalling anything.
Do not assume that a launcher’s personal-profile behavior predicts its behavior for a managed profile, secondary user, or hidden profile. Ask whether the launcher documents those configurations, and test both locked and unlocked states where applicable.
How to choose between launchers
If you are evaluating two launchers, compare the functions you actually use rather than assuming that a popular layout or feature list will transfer perfectly.
Start with your daily actions
- How many home-screen pages and folders do you use?
- Do you rely on a particular widget, app shortcut, or gesture?
- Do you search for apps, contacts, settings, or files from the Home screen?
- Do you use Android 15 Private Space, a work profile, or another managed profile?
- Would losing the current layout be inconvenient, and does the launcher offer import or backup?
Check device-specific compatibility
Read the launcher’s documentation for your phone manufacturer, Android release, navigation mode, and screen form factor. A feature can exist in the launcher while behaving differently on a tablet, foldable, phone with gesture navigation, or device with a managed profile.
Plan the transition
Before committing, record the widgets and shortcuts you use, note any unusual gestures, and make sure you know how to return to the original Home app. If the launcher has an export function, create a backup after arranging the new layout and keep a copy in a location you can access if the app is reset.

Compare the restore path, not just the appearance
A screenshot can show the visual style but not the recovery experience. Check whether backups include folders, icon positions, widgets, gesture assignments, and launcher settings; where the backup is stored; and whether it can be restored on another device or only on the same model. If you change phones, Android versions, or screen sizes, expect to review the imported layout manually.
Common problems after switching
The old home screen seems to be gone
It is usually still associated with the phone, but it is no longer handling the Home role. Open the device’s Home-app setting and select the previous launcher to return to it. Your third-party launcher’s own layout may remain stored in its app data unless you clear or uninstall it.
Widgets are missing or look wrong
Widgets belong to their originating applications, but the new launcher controls where they are placed and how they are resized. Add the widget again from the launcher’s widget picker. If it does not appear, check that the underlying application is installed, enabled, and allowed to run.
Home gestures or animations do not behave as expected
Gesture navigation is coordinated by Android and, on some phones, by manufacturer software as well as the launcher. Review the launcher’s gesture settings and the phone’s navigation setting. Disable overlapping gestures temporarily to identify which component is receiving the action.
Apps cannot be found in the drawer
Confirm that the application is installed and that the launcher has not hidden it or placed it in a category you are not viewing. A launcher discovers activities exposed with ACTION_MAIN and CATEGORY_LAUNCHER; an app that does not expose a conventional launcher activity may not appear as an ordinary drawer item even though it is installed.
Private Space apps are absent
On Android 15, verify that the launcher is assigned the ROLE_HOME role and that the launcher supports the documented hidden-profile requirements. Check the space’s lock state and the launcher’s support information before treating the absence as an installation failure.

The phone keeps asking which launcher to use
Reopen the Home-app setting and select one default. If the choice will not persist, look for device-management policies, a work profile, an app that was disabled, or an update that reset default handlers.
The layout imported incorrectly
Import tools may use different grid sizes, icon packs, folder rules, or widget identifiers. Compare the imported result with your inventory, then rebuild only the missing pieces. Do not clear the old launcher’s data until you have confirmed that you no longer need its saved arrangement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- Select the original manufacturer launcher.
- Press Home and confirm that the previous interface appears.
- Only after confirming the switch should you uninstall the third-party launcher, if you no longer need its saved layout or settings.
Changing the Home app back does not uninstall the other applications that were shown in the third-party drawer. If you later reinstall the launcher, its ability to restore the old arrangement depends on whether its backup data still exists and whether the device configuration has changed.

Frequently asked questions
Does a third-party launcher replace my phone’s operating system?
No. It replaces the app handling the Home role. Android, the notification shade, Settings, lock screen, permissions, and system updates remain supplied by the operating system or manufacturer software.
Will my apps still be there if I change the launcher?
Yes. Installed apps and their data remain unless you uninstall or erase them separately. The launcher simply discovers launchable activities and presents them in its own drawer or search interface.

Usually. Select the original launcher in the phone’s Home-app or default-app setting. Keep the third-party launcher installed until you are certain you no longer need its layout or backup.
Why did my old icons and widgets disappear?
The old arrangement belongs to the previous launcher. A new launcher may not import it, or it may use a different grid and widget system. Re-add items manually or use the new launcher’s documented import and restore tools.
Are all launchers compatible with Android 15 Private Space?
No universal compatibility is guaranteed. Android 15 requires the default Home role and specific hidden-profile handling for launchers that expose Private Space apps. Check the launcher’s own support information and test locked, unlocked, drawer, and search states.
Why is an installed app missing from the drawer?
It may be hidden, filtered into another category, disabled, or lacking an activity with the conventional ACTION_MAIN and CATEGORY_LAUNCHER filters. Open the app from Settings and check the launcher’s filtering controls.

Is installing a launcher a hardware upgrade or repair?
No. It is a software change to the Home experience and does not replace the phone, its accessories, or its physical components.
The decision in one sentence
Install a third-party launcher when you want a different Home-screen and app-discovery experience and are willing to verify device-specific behavior; do not install one expecting it to replace your applications or to guarantee every manufacturer or Android feature will work exactly as before.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will changing launchers delete my apps?
No. A launcher changes the Home role and presentation layer; it does not uninstall applications or erase their data.
How do I return to the original launcher?
Open Settings, find the Home app or default-app selector, choose the manufacturer’s launcher, and press Home to confirm.
Why are Private Space apps missing on Android 15?
The selected launcher must hold the default Home role and support Android’s documented hidden-profile requirements. Check the role, lock state, and launcher compatibility.
Do widgets transfer automatically?
Not always. Widgets come from their original apps, but placement and resizing belong to the launcher. Re-add important widgets and test them.
Can every installed app appear in the app drawer?
Only activities exposed for conventional launching are discovered in the standard process. Hidden, disabled, filtered, or nonstandard apps may need another entry point.
Will gestures work exactly as before?
Not necessarily. Gesture behavior depends on the launcher, Android navigation mode, and manufacturer software, so test your important gestures.
Should I uninstall the old launcher?
Keep it installed until the new launcher is reliable and you have saved any layout you want. Uninstalling can remove access to its stored arrangement.
Does a launcher work identically on every Android phone?
No. Manufacturer software, Android version, screen form factor, profiles, widgets, and permissions can change the result.
The Bottom Line
A third-party launcher changes who handles Home, how your screens and app drawer look, and which discovery tools and gestures you use. Your installed apps, accounts, and Android system remain intact. Verify import, widgets, gestures, profiles, and Android 15 Private Space support on your exact device before making the switch permanent.
