Terraform Google Provider 8.0.0 is a breaking upgrade. It removes several resource and data-source types, deletes or relocates schema arguments, tightens validation, and changes selected defaults, collection types, and state representations. A configuration that still names a removed resource or field can fail provider validation; other changes can produce a different plan without changing the remote object by themselves.

The safe approach is to identify affected blocks, apply the migration named in the official v8.0.0 upgrade guide, initialize the provider deliberately, and inspect the complete plan before applying. Provider schema removal is not evidence that every corresponding Google Cloud object has been deleted or recreated.

What the 8.0.0 upgrade changes

The maintainers group the release-breaking changes into four practical categories. Each category calls for a different response, so classify a resource before editing it.

Change class What you may see First response
Resource or data-source removal An existing block refers to a type that no longer exists in the provider schema. Replace the block with the successor named by the guide, or choose a current service resource after consulting its documentation when no successor is listed.
Field or argument removal Terraform reports an unsupported argument, or state no longer contains the old attribute. Remove, rename, or relocate the argument exactly as the migration notes specify.
Stricter validation Configuration that previously initialized or planned now fails a required-field or exactly-one-of check. Supply the required value or leave only the permitted alternative.
Schema, state, or default change A plan shows a type conversion, collection diff, changed default, or different treatment of zero values. Review the resulting plan and state migration before applying.

The release guide is dated August 26, 2026. It does not publish a quantified success rate or a statistic describing how many deployments are affected; impact depends on which blocks your configuration actually uses.

Resource and data-source removals

These removals are the most visible breaking changes. A configuration containing one of these type names must be migrated to the current provider schema. The guide gives a direction for several services, but not for every removed type.

BeyondCorp application resources and data sources

The provider removes the BeyondCorp app connection, app connector, and app gateway resources and their data sources. The upgrade guide directs users toward BeyondCorp security gateway resources. Map each old block to the security-gateway model that provides the capability you still need; do not assume that a text-only type rename is sufficient, because the schema and lifecycle may differ.

IAP brand and client resources

IAP brand and client resources, along with the IAP client data source, are removed. The v8.0.0 guide does not name a replacement for these IAP types. Treat this as an explicit migration decision: identify the current Identity-Aware Proxy API or another supported access-management resource for your deployment, then validate the replacement independently rather than inventing a provider resource name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Machine-learning and notebook resources

The ML Engine model resource is removed. The guide points migration work toward Vertex AI endpoint or Model Garden resources. Select the destination that matches whether your configuration deploys a serving endpoint, manages a model artifact, or uses a model catalog.

The Notebooks environment, instance, and runtime resources are also removed, including their associated IAM resources. The named direction is the Workbench instance resource. Recreate the instance and its access bindings in the Workbench model, then compare identity, network, and storage settings in the plan instead of assuming the old IAM blocks translate one-for-one.

Vertex AI schedules

The Vertex AI schedule resource is removed. The release guide names a Colab schedule as the migration direction. Check that the scheduled workload is compatible with the Colab scheduling model before moving the block.

Removed type group Migration direction in the guide Important qualification
BeyondCorp app connection, app connector, app gateway resources and data sources BeyondCorp security gateway resources Choose the security-gateway resource whose lifecycle matches the old object.
IAP brand and client resources; IAP client data source No replacement is named in the guide Consult current service documentation and select a supported access-management path.
ML Engine model Vertex AI endpoint or Model Garden resources The appropriate destination depends on whether you serve or catalog the model.
Notebooks environment, instance, runtime, and associated IAM resources Workbench instance Recheck IAM and instance settings in the new model.
Vertex AI schedule Colab schedule Confirm that the scheduled workload fits Colab scheduling.

Removed, renamed, or relocated fields

A resource can remain supported while one of its arguments changes. Search every module, generated file, and reusable variable map—not just the root configuration—for these examples from the upgrade guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Backup and DR: the resource_type argument is removed.
  • Cloud Run worker pools: custom_audiences and the probe header port argument are removed.
  • Compute interconnect attachments: attachment is replaced by attachments. This is a schema change, not merely a formatting preference; adjust the value shape to the plural argument.
  • Reservations: reservation_block_count moves under resource_status[0].reservation_block_count. Read and write logic that addressed the old top-level path must follow the nested state path.
  • DLP catalog: the former catalog field is replaced by the Dataplex catalog field named in the guide. Update the field and verify that the referenced catalog service is the one your deployment intends to use.
  • Integrations: run_as_service_account is removed.

When Terraform reports an unsupported argument, do not silence the error by deleting a value blindly. Determine whether the value was replaced, moved into state, or is no longer represented by the provider.

Validation rules that are now stricter

Some configurations were accepted by earlier provider versions but are invalid under 8.0.0. These failures normally appear during initialization, validation, or planning and are fixed in configuration rather than by importing a remote object again.

Exactly-one-of secret credentials

Selected resources now require exactly one of two secret-key or password fields. Supplying neither fails validation, and supplying both also fails. Model the choice in variables or module inputs so callers cannot accidentally pass both alternatives.

Worker-pool probe headers

If a Cloud Run worker-pool HTTP probe includes a header, the header name is now required. A value without its name is invalid; remove the header entirely when it is not needed.

Workforce-pool SCIM tenants

Creating a workforce-pool SCIM tenant now requires claim_mapping. Existing declarations that omit it need an explicit mapping before creation or recreation can succeed.

Write-only secret versions

A write-only secret version must be supplied with write-only data. Check both sides of the block: selecting a write-only version mode without the corresponding write-only payload is no longer accepted.

Workflows source

Workflow resources now require source_contents. A configuration that relied on another way of supplying the workflow body must provide this field under the new schema.

State, defaults, and collection behavior

Not every v8 change is a removed name. Several adjustments can alter a plan even when the resource type and most arguments remain intact.

Area 8.0 behavior What to inspect
Version state An integer-to-string version field is migrated in state. Review the post-upgrade state and any expressions that assume a numeric type.
Collections Some list attributes become sets. Check ordering-sensitive expressions, indexes, and diff output; sets do not preserve list ordering.
Load balancing The default scheme changes from EXTERNAL to EXTERNAL_MANAGED. Look for load balancers that relied on the old implicit default and decide whether to set the intended scheme explicitly.
Database collation default_collation = "" now explicitly clears collation. Distinguish an omitted argument from an empty string in modules and variables.
Guest accelerators Planning and removal behavior changes when the configured accelerator count is zero. Inspect resources that set a zero count, especially when shrinking or removing accelerators.
GKE naming The maximum name_prefix is longer for cluster and node-pool resources. Recheck generated names and any downstream length assumptions.

The integer-to-string item is a state migration, while the load-balancing and collation items change defaults or interpretation. Treat them differently: a state type conversion may be expected, whereas a default change can cause a real configuration diff.

How existing cloud resources are affected

There are three distinct outcomes to separate during review:

  • Schema failure: a removed type or argument prevents Terraform from loading the configuration. Nothing can be applied until the declaration matches provider 8.0.0.
  • Validation failure: the type still exists, but a newly required field or exactly-one-of rule blocks planning or creation.
  • Plan difference: a changed default, collection type, state representation, or zero-count rule produces an in-place update, replacement, or other diff.

Provider schema removal does not, by itself, prove that the corresponding Google Cloud object was deleted, replaced, or abandoned. Terraform acts on the configuration and state you present. Inspect resource addresses, refresh results, and the proposed actions in the plan before applying any migration.

A controlled upgrade procedure

  1. Pin the version you are evaluating. Make the provider version an explicit choice in your Terraform configuration or lock workflow so that every reviewer and automation run evaluates the same 8.0 line.
  2. Inventory removed types. Search root modules, child modules, data blocks, generated Terraform, and IAM declarations for every removed resource and data-source group listed above.
  3. Search for changed arguments and constraints. Look for resource_type, custom_audiences, the worker-pool probe port, attachment, the old reservation path, the DLP catalog field, run_as_service_account, and the stricter validation cases. Also search for implicit load-balancing defaults, empty collation strings, zero guest-accelerator counts, and expressions that assume list ordering or numeric version values.
  4. Apply the documented migration. Move BeyondCorp blocks to security gateway resources, ML Engine work toward Vertex AI endpoint or Model Garden resources, notebook deployments to Workbench, and schedules to Colab scheduling where those directions fit. For IAP items, choose a supported current service path because the guide does not specify one.
  5. Initialize deliberately. The provider repository states that the provider does not upgrade automatically and documents terraform init -upgrade for upgrading to the latest stable version. Use that command only after the intended version constraint is in place, then commit the resulting lock-file change according to your team’s normal review process. See the provider repository README.
  6. Validate and plan. Run your normal validation and planning commands, review errors first, then inspect every proposed create, update, replacement, and deletion. Pay special attention to load-balancing schemes, set-versus-list diffs, reservation state paths, and resources whose old type was removed.
  7. Apply only after the plan is understood. If a replacement or deletion is unexpected, stop and correct the configuration or state interpretation before applying. A successful initialization is not proof that the migration is behaviorally safe.

How to prioritize a large configuration

For each affected block, record four facts in a migration checklist:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Change class: removal, field relocation, validation, state/type change, or default change.
  2. Usage: whether the block is actually present in the deployment path, including conditional modules and workspaces.
  3. Official path: the successor named by the guide, or a documented service decision when no successor is named.
  4. Plan result: whether the edited block is unchanged, updated in place, replaced, or removed.

Start with removed types because they can block the entire configuration from loading. Next fix validation errors, then review default and state changes that may affect live services. This order distinguishes mandatory edits from changes that require judgment about the resulting plan.

Common failure patterns and corrections

“Unsupported argument” after initialization

Confirm the argument is one of the removed or relocated fields rather than a spelling error. Replace attachment with the plural interconnect form, move reservation block count to the nested state path, or remove an argument that has no v8 equivalent. Re-run validation before looking at remote state.

“Exactly one” or missing-required-field error

Inspect module defaults and variable propagation. Ensure exactly one secret credential is set, add a probe header name when a header exists, provide SCIM claim_mapping on creation, include write-only data for a write-only secret version, and set workflow source_contents.

Unexpected load-balancer change

Compare the configured scheme with the new default. If the deployment must remain on the former behavior, express the intended scheme explicitly and confirm that the provider supports it for that resource before applying.

Large diffs after a type or collection change

Separate genuine infrastructure actions from representation changes. A state-migrated string may be expected; a list-to-set conversion can reorder values and affect expressions; a zero accelerator count can change removal planning. Resolve expression and module assumptions before accepting a replacement.

Bottom line

Terraform Google Provider 8.0.0 is not a transparent drop-in update. Migrate removed resources, relocate deleted fields, satisfy tighter validation, and review changed defaults and state types. Initialize the provider intentionally, then let the plan—not the provider version number alone—determine whether each existing resource can be updated safely.
