Unexpectedly high Lightning fees usually come from the route, not from a single network-wide price. Each forwarding channel on the selected path can add a fixed base fee and a percentage-like fee based on the amount forwarded. A longer path, a multipart payment, or a route constrained by private channel balances can therefore cost more than another route for the same invoice.
First identify what your wallet calls a “fee.” A Lightning routing fee is paid to forwarding nodes. Wallet or custodial service charges and on-chain Bitcoin fees for opening, closing, or managing channels are separate. The distinction determines both the explanation and the fix.
How Lightning routing fees are calculated
Lightning does not have one universal transaction fee. A payment is carried through one or more channels, and every forwarding node applies the policy advertised for the channel it is using. Lightning Labs describes the forwarding charge as the difference between the HTLC a node receives and the HTLC it forwards onward: Channel Fees.
A useful simplified formula is:
per-hop forwarding fee = base fee + (forwarded amount × proportional rate)

The total is the sum of the applicable charges over the forwarding hops and, for a multipart payment, over its separate parts. Wallets do not all display these components in the same way, so the estimate shown in an app may be a rounded total or may include a service charge in addition to routing fees.
Base fee: a fixed charge per forwarded HTLC
The base fee is a fixed amount charged each time a node forwards an HTLC (the conditional payment used by Lightning). It applies regardless of whether the forwarded amount is large or small. This makes base fees especially noticeable on small payments and on payments divided into many parts.
Lightning Labs gives a one-hop arithmetic example: for a 1,000-satoshi invoice, a node charging a 1-satoshi base fee receives an HTLC for 1,001 satoshis and forwards 1,000 satoshis. That example illustrates the accounting; it is not a claim about a typical current fee.
Proportional fee: a rate applied to the amount
The proportional component is commonly expressed in parts per million (ppm). A rate of 1,000 ppm means 1,000 satoshis per 1,000,000 satoshis forwarded, or 0.1% of the forwarded amount. Core Lightning documents this setting as feeppm; its worked example is available in the setchannel reference.

For a 1,000,000-satoshi amount, a 1,000-ppm policy adds 1,000 satoshis before any base fee. On a 10,000-satoshi amount, the same rate adds only 10 satoshis. A route with a low base fee but a high ppm rate can be expensive for a large payment, while a route with a higher base fee but a low ppm rate can be cheaper for that same payment.
Why two apparently identical payments can have different totals
| Situation | What changes | Why the fee can rise |
|---|---|---|
| Different route | The channels and their fee policies | Each forwarding hop sets its own base fee and proportional rate. |
| More hops | The number of forwarding channels | More policies are added to the total. |
| Multipart payment | The number of HTLC parts and their paths | Each part can incur base fees on each forwarding path. |
| Large amount | The amount subject to ppm rates | The proportional component grows with the amount forwarded. |
| Liquidity-constrained route | Which feasible pathfinding result is selected | A wallet may use a costlier path when cheaper-looking channels cannot carry the payment in the required direction. |
The route, not just the amount, determines the price
Pathfinding considers channel-policy information, fees, and timelock details. Public channel announcements allow software to construct a graph, but each channel on a candidate path can publish different forwarding terms. Lightning Labs explains this route selection in Sending Payments.
Long routes accumulate policy charges
Suppose a payment crosses four forwarding nodes. Even if each node’s policy looks modest, the payment can collect four base fees plus four proportional calculations. A three-hop route and a six-hop route can therefore produce noticeably different totals for the same invoice. The amount entering an upstream hop also reflects the fees required by downstream hops, so the exact arithmetic depends on the implementation and route.

Shorter is not automatically cheaper or more reliable. A short channel may advertise a high ppm rate, have insufficient balance in the needed direction, or be temporarily unusable. Pathfinding weighs several constraints rather than selecting solely by hop count.

Multipart payments can add fixed charges
A multipart payment (often called a multi-part payment) splits the invoice amount across multiple paths. Splitting can make a payment possible when no single route has enough usable liquidity, but every part creates additional forwarding HTLCs. Because the base fee is charged per forwarded HTLC, several small parts can pay more base fees than one part of the same total value.
The proportional component is calculated on each part’s forwarded amount. Splitting does not inherently increase the percentage component, but it can change which channels are used and can add fixed charges. Check the wallet’s route or attempt details to see whether the payment was split.
Liquidity can force a more expensive route—or make a route fail
Public channel capacity is not the same as spendable balance on each side of a channel. The public graph can show that a channel has a certain capacity without revealing how that capacity is distributed between its two participants. A route that appears feasible from public data may lack enough balance in the direction your payment needs.

What to do after a liquidity-related failure
- Check whether the wallet reports a failed route, a fee-limit error, or a liquidity-related error.
- If the wallet offers a maximum-fee or fee-limit setting, verify that it is not so low that all viable routes are rejected. The exact label and control vary by wallet.
- Try a smaller amount when practical; a route can have enough directional liquidity for a smaller payment but not the original amount.
- Allow the wallet to retry or choose a new route rather than repeatedly forcing the same failed path.
- For a large payment, a multipart option may improve the chance of success, but it can add base fees and is not automatically cheaper.
Separate routing fees from other charges
Before judging a fee as “high,” classify it. The following categories are economically different:
- Lightning routing fee: the sum paid to forwarding nodes under the channel policies on your route.
- Wallet or service charge: an amount added by a hosted wallet, exchange, or other service. The sources cited here do not establish how any particular wallet labels or combines this charge.
- On-chain channel-management fee: a Bitcoin miner fee for opening, closing, or otherwise managing a channel. It is paid through an on-chain transaction, not as a forwarding charge on the Lightning route.
- Operator liquidity cost: a node operator’s expense for moving funds to rebalance channels or obtain usable inbound capacity. This is not automatically added to an ordinary user’s payment.
Lightning Labs discusses liquidity management, including the operational distinction between channel balances and the costs of moving funds, in Managing Liquidity on the Lightning Network and Understanding Liquidity. Services such as Loop and Pool are described there as tools for node operators moving between on-chain Bitcoin and Lightning or acquiring inbound capacity; they are context-dependent, not required for an ordinary payment.
Worked examples: where an unexpectedly high total comes from
| Example | Fee mechanics | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| One hop, 1,000-satoshi invoice | 1-satoshi base fee; the forwarding node receives 1,001 satoshis and forwards 1,000. | The extra 1 satoshi is a fixed forwarding charge in this arithmetic example. |
| One hop, 1,000,000 satoshis at 1,000 ppm | 1,000 satoshis proportional fee, equal to 0.1% of the forwarded amount. | The ppm rate scales with amount; it is not a flat 1,000-satoshi charge for every payment. |
| Four-hop payment | Each hop applies its own base and proportional policy. | The total can exceed a one-hop estimate even when every individual policy is small. |
| Four-part payment | Each part follows a route and can incur a base fee at every forwarding hop. | Extra HTLCs can raise the fixed-fee portion, even when the combined payment amount is unchanged. |
The examples are deliberately limited to the stated policies. They are not measurements of an average or current network fee.

A practical checklist for diagnosing your payment
- Open the payment details. Look for a fee breakdown, route view, number of hops, number of parts, or a maximum-fee setting. Wallet interfaces differ, so use the labels provided by your wallet rather than assuming that “network fee” means routing fee.
- Classify the charge. Determine whether the displayed amount is a Lightning forwarding fee, a wallet/service charge, or an on-chain fee connected with channel management.
- Record the payment amount. A proportional ppm fee rises with the amount, while a base fee does not. This helps reveal which component dominates.
- Check route length and splitting. More forwarding hops and more multipart paths generally create more opportunities for base fees to accumulate.
- Review the fee limit. A low fee cap can cause failure; a high cap can permit a wallet to choose a route that succeeds but costs more than you expected. The control’s name and behavior are wallet-specific.
- Compare a later attempt carefully. A changed total may reflect a different route or newly learned liquidity information, not a change in a universal Lightning price.

Commands and output fields depend on your LND release and configuration. A historical Lightning Labs guide published on November 7, 2019 discusses defaults for the version covered at that time; do not treat those historical defaults as current defaults for every installation. Current settings should be read from your node and its installed documentation.
Core Lightning channel policies
Core Lightning exposes channel-specific controls through setchannel, including a base fee in millisatoshis (feebase) and a proportional rate (feeppm). Public policy changes are broadcast to the network. The command syntax, available flags, and policy-update limits are implementation-specific, so do not copy LND command assumptions into Core Lightning or vice versa. Consult the Core Lightning setchannel reference for the exact interface.
What node operators should count as a cost
Forwarding revenue is only one side of operating a routing node. Payments can move a channel’s balance toward one side, leaving too little outbound or inbound liquidity for the traffic the operator wants to serve. Rebalancing sends funds through other routes or uses another liquidity-management operation, and that action can itself cost money.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Evaluate a rebalance against the routing fees earned since the previous rebalance, the liquidity it restores, and the traffic you expect to receive. A rebalance that costs more than the fees it enables may not be economical. Conversely, a cheap channel can be strategically useful if it supplies needed directional liquidity, even when its immediate forwarding revenue is modest.
- Track fees earned from successful forwards with your node’s forwarding-history tools.
- Observe whether channels repeatedly run out of outbound or inbound capacity in the direction your users need.
- Set policies deliberately: a higher ppm rate may compensate for scarce liquidity but can make the channel less attractive in pathfinding.
- Account separately for on-chain transactions and any liquidity service charges; they are not the same line item as a user’s forwarding fee.
Why a “high fee” is not always a fee-policy problem
A wallet may choose a costlier route because the cheapest advertised route is not usable at the moment. Channel balances change as other payments settle, and the public graph does not reveal those private balances. A route can also fail because the amount cannot fit through one channel even when the total public capacity looks sufficient.
In addition, a multipart payment may be the wallet’s successful fallback after a single path could not carry the amount. The final charge then reflects both the route policies and the extra HTLCs created by splitting. Lowering a fee limit can prevent an expensive payment, but it can also prevent any route from succeeding; raising it does not make the underlying route cheaper.
Bottom line: use the route details, not a universal Lightning rate
Unexpectedly high Lightning fees are usually explained by three interacting factors: the base fee and ppm policy on each forwarding hop, the length and structure of the selected route, and the liquidity available in the required direction. Start by identifying the exact charge, then inspect hops, parts, policies, and fee limits. Treat channel rebalancing and on-chain channel transactions as separate operator costs, not automatic additions to every user payment.
