The recurring Arsia Mons Elongated Cloud (AMEC) is a water-ice cloud produced when winds encounter the volcano and force moist Martian air upward. Arsia Mons generates an atmospheric wave; air parcels rise several kilometres in minutes, cool rapidly, and reach a humidity spike that allows water vapour to freeze into ice particles. New modelling indicates that the particles may form through homogeneous nucleation—freezing directly from vapour without first attaching to dust—although that molecular-scale process has not been observed directly and some model details do not exactly match spacecraft observations.

The cloud is therefore an atmospheric, orographic phenomenon, not volcanic smoke or an eruption plume. It appears repeatedly during southern spring and summer, grows westward before and after sunrise, can extend roughly 1,800 kilometres, and usually fades before afternoon.

What the Arsia Mons cloud is

Arsia Mons is a giant shield volcano in the Tharsis region of Mars. The feature discussed here is the Arsia Mons Elongated Cloud, usually abbreviated AMEC: a narrow, exceptionally long cloud that repeatedly forms on the volcano’s western side. The life-cycle study by Hernández-Bernal and colleagues identifies it as a water-ice cloud based on spacecraft observations and its behaviour through the Martian day. The study assembled observations from Mars Express, NASA’s MAVEN and Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, Viking 2 and India’s Mars Orbiter Mission. The 2021 Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets study found that the cloud returns in a regular seasonal window and follows a distinctive morning cycle.

Its source is the volcano’s influence on airflow, not active volcanism. ESA’s observational summary explicitly separates the AMEC from volcanic activity and describes it as a curious atmospheric cloud. ESA’s 2021 account reports 63 Mars Express Visual Monitoring Camera observations used to characterize that cycle.

How Arsia Mons makes the cloud

The process can be understood as a chain of topography, uplift, cooling and ice formation. The first parts are grounded in atmospheric physics; the final ice-nucleation step is the new model-supported interpretation.

1. Winds meet the volcano

Regional winds flow toward and around Arsia Mons. Because the volcano rises high above its surroundings, the air cannot simply pass through it. The mountain diverts the flow and creates an atmospheric gravity wave on its lee, or downwind, side. That wave repeatedly positions rising and sinking air over the same area, which helps explain why the cloud develops in a consistent location rather than appearing randomly.

2. A moist parcel is lifted rapidly

In the modelling account reported by ESA in 2026, the wave carries a moist parcel upward by several kilometres in only a few minutes. Some of the water is already present as atmospheric vapour. ESA also mentions frost at the summit as a possible additional source, but that contribution is a suggestion rather than a measured water budget. ESA’s 2026 explanation treats the mountain’s mechanical lifting as the trigger.

3. Rising air cools by about 30°C in 10 minutes

As the parcel rises, the surrounding pressure falls and the air expands. Expansion cools it quickly. The ESA report describes a modelled temperature drop of approximately 30°C in 10 minutes. Such a rapid change can push the parcel far past the conditions needed for water vapour to remain gaseous, creating a sharp increase in relative humidity.

4. Water freezes through a proposed unusual pathway

On Earth and in many conventional cloud models, supercooled water vapour generally needs a surface—often a dust or salt particle—on which ice can begin forming. The new model instead includes homogeneous nucleation: water molecules organize directly into ice embryos within the vapour, without first condensing on a pre-existing nucleus. The associated paper, identified by ESA as published in Nature Geoscience, reports that adding this process allows a model to reproduce the AMEC’s unusual dimensions and timing. The authors’ available abstract is hosted on arXiv.

This does not mean a camera has watched individual molecules turn into ice. Homogeneous nucleation is inferred because the model reproduces cloud characteristics that conventional microphysics could not reproduce. ESA also notes that some modelled features do not exactly agree with observations, so the mechanism should be described as a model-supported explanation, not a conclusively observed particle-scale event.

5. Ice particles are carried westward

Once ice particles form, the same wind field that helped create the cloud transports them west. The cloud’s visible tail can therefore become vastly longer than the area in which new ice is actively forming. The apparent “growth” is a combination of continuing formation near Arsia Mons and rapid advection of existing particles downwind.

Measured feature Published value Qualification
Maximum westward length About 1,800 km Maximum reported by Hernández-Bernal et al. for the AMEC; individual events vary.
Typical width Below 200 km in the 2021 study; about 150 km in ESA’s summary These are observational descriptions, not a fixed geometric limit.
Expansion speed About 170 m/s Reported for MY34 near an altitude of roughly 45 km.
Rapid expansion interval About 2.5 hours Westward expansion in the documented morning cycle.
Cloud altitude About 45 km Altitude reported for the detailed MY34 observations.
Temperature decrease in the new model About 30°C in 10 minutes ESA’s 2026 model description; it is not a direct thermometer measurement inside each cloud.

The observational results are detailed in the 2021 life-cycle paper. They establish when and how the cloud appears; the later nucleation mechanism comes from modelling reported by ESA and in the related abstract.

Why it appears every morning

The AMEC has a repeatable daily evolution rather than a permanent, stationary cover.

  1. Before sunrise: the cloud begins developing on the western slope or lee side of Arsia Mons. The pre-dawn start is consistent with a circulation and wave that have been established before sunlight reaches the region.
  2. Early morning growth: the cloud’s tail expands west for approximately 2.5 hours. New ice forms near the volcano while winds stretch the older material downwind.
  3. Around 8.3–8.7 local true solar time: the study reports that active formation stops and the cloud detaches from Arsia Mons. Winds continue carrying the detached cloud westward.
  4. Before afternoon: the ice evaporates or sublimates as the atmosphere and sunlight change. The visible feature therefore disappears within hours, even though the next morning’s circulation can create another one.

The precise boundaries of a season and the exact start on every day cannot be inferred from spacecraft schedules alone; observation windows leave gaps. The reported cycle describes the behaviour seen when the cloud was observed, rather than claiming uninterrupted daily monitoring.

When the seasonal cloud returns

The 2021 study found annual recurrence approximately between solar longitudes (Ls) 220° and 320°, a period centered around southern solstice and covering southern spring and summer. “Annual” here means a recurrence during the corresponding part of Mars’s year, not that every Martian day in that interval was observed. Mars Express and other spacecraft do not view every location continuously.

Activity can differ between Martian years. The life-cycle paper reports less activity in MY33 and a delayed onset in MY34, likely influenced by the global dust storm. That variation is another reason not to treat 1,800 km, 170 m/s or any single start date as a permanent specification of the cloud.

Why homogeneous nucleation is important—and still uncertain

Homogeneous nucleation is significant because it removes a requirement built into many ordinary cloud models: a solid particle on which water can begin freezing. Mars has a thin, dusty atmosphere, but the AMEC’s combination of exceptional length, rapid formation and short lifetime remained difficult to reproduce with conventional microphysics. In the new simulations, direct freezing from vapour provides enough ice quickly enough to match those distinctive traits.

ESA lead author Jorge Hernández-Bernal described the modelling requirement this way: “To create the AMEC in our modelling, we found that we needed to include some exotic physics… physics that, while included in textbooks, is treated as theoretical and usually thought not to happen in nature. It certainly hasn’t been seen in action before.” He also said, “For the AMEC, it seems that cloud formation takes place without needing any of this ‘stuff’.” These statements refer to what the model requires, not to a direct observation of molecules.

The evidence has two layers. Spacecraft images and long-term records strongly establish the cloud’s recurrence, geometry and timing. The homogeneous-nucleation claim is an interpretation that makes a numerical model reproduce those observations. Because ESA reports remaining differences between model output and observations, further measurements and improved modelling are needed before the molecular pathway can be considered settled.

Is the cloud made from water or dust?

The AMEC is made of water ice. Dust may be present in the Martian atmosphere and can affect visibility, but the observed feature is identified as an ice cloud. It should not be called smoke, ash or an eruption plume, and there is no evidence that an eruption is powering it.

Arsia Mons is also associated with a different recurring feature that can cause confusion: a spiral dust cloud described by NASA. That phenomenon involves sunlight warming air on the volcano’s slopes, lifting a small amount of dust and concentrating it above the caldera. NASA’s page discusses examples near the beginning of southern winter, whereas the AMEC is a pre-dawn and morning water-ice cloud in southern spring and summer. Compare the two phenomena by material, season, daily timing and mechanism:

Feature Arsia Mons Elongated Cloud (AMEC) Spiral dust cloud
Material Water-ice particles Dust lifted from sun-warmed slopes
Typical seasonal context Southern spring and summer; approximately Ls 220°–320° NASA examples near the start of southern winter
Daily behaviour Begins before sunrise, expands in the morning and fades before afternoon Driven by sunlight-warmed slope air in the NASA description
Formation explanation Orographic uplift, rapid cooling and modelled homogeneous nucleation Dust lifted and converged over the caldera
Primary reference Hernández-Bernal et al. (2021) and ESA (2026) NASA Science Photojournal

Why a cloud 1,800 kilometres long can vanish in hours

The AMEC’s length is mainly a transport story, not evidence that a single, rigid cloud bank is hanging over Mars. New ice forms in a compact source region as the wave lifts and cools air. Winds at roughly 45 km altitude then move those particles west at a reported expansion speed near 170 m/s. During the approximately 2.5-hour growth phase, that advection can create a tail thousands of kilometres long.

Formation stops later in the morning when the local atmospheric conditions no longer support the same nucleation rate. The detached ice then encounters changing temperature, humidity and sunlight while it continues downwind. Ice particles sublimate back into vapour, causing the elongated feature to fade before afternoon. This explains how the cloud can be both enormous in horizontal extent and short-lived.

How scientists study such a short-lived feature

No single spacecraft provides the complete story. Wide-angle images reveal the cloud’s outline and movement, while repeated observations establish its daily and seasonal recurrence. The life-cycle study combined records from several missions, including Mars Express, MAVEN, Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, Viking 2 and India’s Mars Orbiter Mission. ESA emphasizes that Mars Express can revisit the phenomenon on hour-long timescales, an advantage for tracking a feature that forms and disappears within one morning.

These observations constrain what any physical model must reproduce: a western location, rapid morning elongation, a high altitude, a narrow width relative to its length, detachment around mid-morning and disappearance before afternoon. The 2026 work tests a formation mechanism against those constraints; it does not replace the observations with a direct laboratory-style detection of nucleation.

What remains unknown

  • The exact water budget: atmospheric vapour is available, while summit frost is proposed as a possible contributor. The relative amounts have not been established by a direct source measurement in the evidence summarized here.
  • How often the mechanism operates: the cloud recurs seasonally, but activity and onset vary between Martian years, including the dust-storm-affected MY34.
  • Why model and observation differ: ESA reports that some simulated features do not exactly match the observed cloud, leaving room for refinements in circulation, microphysics or transport.
  • Particle-scale confirmation: spacecraft images resolve the cloud, not individual ice embryos. Homogeneous nucleation remains a model-supported interpretation until measurements can test it more directly.

The best current answer is therefore specific but appropriately qualified: Arsia Mons creates the AMEC by forcing moist air upward in a wave; rapid cooling makes the air supersaturated; and models indicate that direct vapour-to-ice nucleation may produce the cloud’s remarkable burst of ice formation. The cloud’s recurring morning appearance is a consequence of the volcano’s topography interacting with the seasonal and daily Martian atmosphere.
